I see a lot of guys on sport bikes wearing jackets that appear to have armor, but they have their helmets hung on the grab rail. Is it a style statement or do they know when to put it on just before a crash? | ||

I asked a Florida student this question one time. The response from him, in a state where if you are under 21, you are required by law to wear a helmet, was the helmet is kept on the grab rail for when the operator picks up an attractive underage member of the opposite sex. | ||

My favorite sight is to see people on motorcycles wearing no protection other than gloves. It's kinda like they recognize the need, but just can't quite commit! Option #2: Gloves are cool if you're seen wearing them. Helmets and other gear are not. | ||

This spring I was behind a couple of guys riding 'Busas. They got to a stop light and decided to put their helmets on while waiting for the light to change. I had had no clue what had changed in the situation that made them suddenly want to wear their lids. I see helmets hanging on bikes going down the road all the time. I don't get it. | ||

I see helmets on elbows going down the road all the time.People leaving Massachusetts stop at the Rhode Island state line and remove their helmets from their heads to protect their elbows.Strange behavior that rates an elbow ahead of the noggin. I have a coworker that rides a new HD without PPE. I overheard him telling someone in the office that should he fall, he will protect his head with his hands and arms. I just rolled my eyes in the background. I've tried to push him to wear gear to no avail. | ||

Being from southern Massachusetts myself, I have seen these morons popping off the helmets at exactly the state line too. One delightful time, I saw a guy flub the operation and dropped his novelty helmet right on route 295 at speed. I had to dodge the helmet chunks. I can sort of understand removing the lids at the next gas stop but why do they have to remove them IMMEDIATELY at the state line like it's full of bees or something? | ||

The helmets are preventing them from living free and riding hard! The best I ever saw was at a Harley test ride event. You had to wear a helmet. And this one guy, he was wearing a helmet as required... nobody ever said he had to buckle the straps, though! | ||

I've heard a lot of excuses for not wearing a helmet over the years. None of them made sense. I myself used to wear all the gear until I read an article that said most accidents happen within a mile of home. Now I just park my bike at a friends house (2.3) miles away) and won't ride within a 1.5 mile radius of my home. no gear necessary! | ||

My dad was hit head on week before last. He was driving his Mountaineer bruised and a bump on his head from the rear view mirror. Dad will be back to normal in about a month. His roomate had a crash on his bike he let his female pick up passenger have his helmet. When he was out of surgery for reattaching his ear his surgeon spent 2 hours aday picking pavement and glass out of the kids head. He was on pain meds but no locals. Kid was tough but about 2 hours was all he could stand at a time. Dr told him pieces would work out over a year or so. | ||

Had glass come out of me two years after an explosion. Not much pain. Hurt like a needle coming out of my side and cut my finger. I always managed to get the helmet on prior to the crash. Fastened the chin strap before turning the key. | ||

I had a friend that left the road in a storm and hit a palm tree palm tree and the helmet weight broke his neck. now i have a brother that because of this will not strap the chin strap. | ||

Sometimes things happen close to home. About a month ago a recently retired couple that I know decided to take the day out on their Harley cruiser. They're just taking a leisurely ride, no helmets required. Not even five miles from their house they make a left turn at an intersection, someone had spilled motor oil on the road and down they went. This is at less than 15 mph, husband rides the bike down, wife gets thrown off. After two days on life support she finally dies. There are worse things than being a little uncomfortable. | ||

If he hit something hard enough to break his neck, just imagine the damage that would of been done if he didn't have a lid. That's my view on it... there may be a *very* few edge cases where the weight of a helmet will do damage, but usually things are bad enough at that point that the helmet isn't a big deal. And I'd rather dress for the 98% of cases instead of the 2% that I'm not likely to see. They're just taking a leisurely ride, no helmets required. No such thing as a leisurely ride when there are any other vehicles, or you're on public roads.  | ||

How much is your head worth to you? I didn't wear a helmet I wouldn't be here. No joke, no exaggeration Plain & simple unvarnished truth. A helmet has saved my life twice. Not much else to say really. It's a no-brainer. (pun intended) | ||

Had a conversation today with one of the top of the line helmet fabricator guys. He said they recently checked a large group of riders who wear helmets to see if their helmets did in fact fit correctly. He reports more than 50% of the those checked did not have properly fitting helmets. | ||
