I'm guessing it is just a different ignition rotor & pickup - this engine is missing the setup used directly off the crank. | ||

It is a 4 cylinder 2 stroke boxer engine made by Konig - more here: Konig speed boat engines were used in 500GP for a few years, notably by Kim Newcombe. He was one point off the lead of the championship in 1973 when he was tragically killed at Silverstone. He was eventually posthumously awarded 2nd place in the championship splitting the factory MV's Giacomo Agostini and Phil Read. For a 'home built' special this was a miraculous achievement and one that has not been equalled to this day. The achilles heel of the bike was that it was mated to a Manx Norton gearbox, which unfortunately was old fashioned even then. The engine achieved even more success in sidecar racing (both in 500 and 750 form) and I remember watching the Boret brothers racing with their Renwick Koening engined bike back in 74 at Silverstone. I think they finished 2nd in the 1973 world sidecar championship. It sounded awesome too! | ||

It does look like some kind of electrical device but the aluminum disc thing looks exactly like a rope pull starter. Hard to believe but even larger outboard motors used to have one. | ||

Below the crank is an ignition triggering device(you can see the "timing/firing" marks on the wheel).Like a modern day electronic triggering system in cars(without the points).Way cool to see.Would love to "hear" all those bikes.Can understand the success of those Konig engines(lower center of gravity and the power..makes sense).Love those sidecar races.The"monkee's" really get a workout...have to be very agile.Lt | ||
