I know that American isnt a race, but lets quit being silly - here in America (where most of us on this board are from), what nationality are many of the lawn care workers?
Come on, dont be naive about this.
It was a racist comment.
Around here they are Finns or norwegians

I just got delivered my next pair of boots:

Chippewa boots - from Hampton Shoe Co - www.americanmadeworkboots.com

Bought Chippewa boots before so know my size exactly but they also have good return policy (assuming you've NOT abused the boot)

I bought my Buell(s) because it's American made.

On a side note but still a part of this discussion, while some high profile felons have college degrees the vast majority do not.

Due to my work I associate with many convicted felons. Of the 2200+ population in the facility I would estimate (this is a thoughtful and calculated number, by the way) that perhaps 5% of the felons we hold, or that pass through, have college degrees. Which is to say 95+ percent of the felons I am familiar with DO NOT have degrees.

I think if you wanted to use a college degree as a deciding factor it is a valid point. As a matter of lifestyle and behavior most criminals are very much in the now, their focus on the moment seldom allows them to acquire a college degree. (It's a matter of learned and/or inherent thinking patterns that lead people to criminal behavior, many humanities sources can be turned to for source material on "criminal thinking patterns." Besides my experience over the last nine years selections from Glenn Walters' book, The Criminal Lifestyle: Patterns of Criminal Conduct is primarily where I base my references from).

*I know there are some here who might be offended by that - tough, sorry, but it's true. I'm not saying felon's can't get degrees, just that they generally don't. Some people do grow up and change their perspective, their focus, or they attain a degree while in custody of the state.

I also don't have my college degree yet, so even though I can push a mower just fine (first job @14yrs old) I also would not qualify to mow some lawns... but I would clear the background check just fine...

...and I buy American as a general rule.

Oh to those who are so narrow in their world view: Mexicans and Canadians are Americans. Some of those Americans have even moved to the United States of America, either legally or illegally.

Want to piss off a Canadian? Use the term "American" when you are talking only about US citizen(s).

And people seriously think the U.S's problems are the fault of a bunch of illegal immigrant dishwashers, cleaning people, nannies and lawn care workers? Really? Well, they are banging your wives while you are hard at work LOL. And taking all the spots at all the top universities and if only we could boot them all out, we could all have health care.

Maybe we can bomb them. We like to bomb brown people (to paraphrase the late, great George Carlin).

I was actually discussing this thread last night to a friend of mine

I am in NC, and a close friend is about to open up a clothing store this saturday
One of their goals is to have a lot of domestic goods, right now when they open they will be at 90% domestic, but are hoping to be at 100% by the holidays (the items that arent in the 90 have some things not from USA, buttons mainly)

But we were talking about it last night, how it is important to sometimes spend a little bit of money when youre able to see who it impacts, youre actually socially conscious and want the country to do better.

I'll post up a video in about 6 months that you guys will probably enjoy
Its a video my friend/his shop is doing in colaboration with a denim manufacturer here in NC - they are starting to shoot footage next month
-the cotton is grown here in nc
-its then turned into denim here in nc
-denim is sent to the manufacturer...here in nc
-then sold to a store here in nc
-which will then be sold to a customer here in nc
the jeans will have never left the state in the whole process, pretty neat.

the reason for such a long production time is they are filming each step of the process (from harvest, being sold) and then showing how the jeans wear over 3 months of heavy use.

pretty neat.

I really wished that products would be clearly marked in the upper right hand corner with a nice American flag if it were truly "Made in the USA". This would make shopping so much easier for me and the wife. I don't want anyone to make regulations or new laws for it, but maybe companies will all catch on someday and put a sticker on the box before it ships in the same location on the packaging. I guess this will happen right about the time I win the lottery also. LOL

I blame unions only in that they have been duped by their leadership into supporting political parties and policies that almost guarantee the offshoring of the very jobs their union leadership says they are trying to preserve.

Then I see honest, hard working union folks come here and advocate for more "taxes on the rich" and "taxes on corporations".

Do they really believe that higher taxes will help to save American jobs?

There are and have been plenty of non-union private sector manufacturing jobs that can't compete with Chinese government subsidized labor.

Agreed. It isn't just union folks losing jobs. Many manufacturing jobs have been outsourced.

As have service jobs. Profit margins aren't increasing with the outsourcing.

I can tell you where the money's going.

Littlebuggles...On a side note.

What about undetected crime?
You don't need a degree to see that education has nothing to do with being clever enough to avoid detection BUT,if you have a degree you are less likley to be detected?
The Drug Cartel is thriving within the prison system while we speak.

Still not seeing it. What race are the lawn care workers that were "made in America"? Do you know? If all the lawn care workers in America are Hispanic, then how is hiring an American worker vs. a foreign one racist?

Like I said earlier, if you hear 'white' when someone says American, you might be the racist.

I did some looking into it, because I know the union make it near impossible for them to fire someone, not to mention lay off 35,000 people. Guess what, they didn't. They offered early retirement and other buyout packages to pay employees to leave. Nobody got a pink slip, nobody left that didn't want to.

Just wanted to set the record straight on that one.

Someone tell Michael Moore.

Unions are just swell...

"President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. Let's take these son of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong," Jimmy Hoffa Jr., Teamsters Union boss speaking of Republicans in intro to President Obama.

My response? Bring it. I dare you. : |

What should we call citizens of the United States of America?

Asians ... Europeans ... Africans ... Australians ... North Americans ... South Americans ...

Heck if I know - I'm as guilty of the loose use of "American" as the rest of the country.

Mr. Jefferson et al did not need to think about it back in the 18th century, since Canada and Mexico were just, well, kinda not there for them. Maybe if they were countries at the time, the founding fathers could have come up with a snappier name for our nation. :- )

Blake, you read far too much into my casual use of a familiar expression.

Is it intellectually comforting to you to put people and/or their behavior into pigeon-holed, labeled compartments?

Either way, I sense a drifting away from original thread subject, which is a far more interesting topic.

Part of the problem is the so-called "American" corporation shipping the jobs overseas. Immelt at GE is one of the worst offenders, as noted in this brief, excellent article:http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2009073021/ge- promotes-manufacturing-jobs-us-then-ships-em-overs eas.

Immelt has no business being tapped to hand out advice to Obama or anyone else in DC, unless he is willing to put his money where his mouth is. And even then.
