2wd is selectable. You have a choice.

Urals do not have a differential. Both rear wheels turn at the same speed, so....
When trying to turn on dry pavement, it will very very very much prefer to go in a more or less straight line. No matter what bar inputs you give. One tire HAS to skid or slip to turn, Not a problem on dirt, mud or snow. Worst case, the FRONT wheel just skids and the Hack goes right on trucking off the road.

On dry pavement, you just select 1wd. No problems. ( other than the differences between a motorcycle, and a sidecar rig. Not the same thing. Not a Trike ( which HAS a differential ) Not a Car, Not a Bike. It's different. )

DUDE,

Thing is awesome congrats. Was bummed when you sold your Buell, but the Ural is a very nice pick-up CityX will be jealous! - Where is he anyway.... I'm jealous, and very happy for you. Hope you and the Misses get lots and lots of enjoyment out of it.

If I'm in your area, I'll be bugging you for a ride.

Just go get a machine gun to put on the side car, so four balls are still cool ; )

Thanks everyone! I'm really excited about it. It already has a plug installed for heated gear, which means I may actually extend my riding season (been thinking about it forever).

Also, it has a 55 amp alternator that pumps out 770 watts. I'm not for certain, but I think it may run a microwave and mini fridge.

I suspect all year riding in GA is very doable.

If I had a 2WD Ural,I'd be riding year round in Norway, so NY shouldn't be an issue...

The lack of differential thing is pretty much the same as on an old off-road 3-wheeler (or at least the little kids one I rode). Your best bet when trying to make a turn was to actually let the inside wheel pick up off the pavement - that thing was a blast!

snow camping with the Ural crew is an annual tradition, nothing like snow, barbque, vodka and tented out in the middle of nowhere.
Best bunch of rowdy hooligans on 3 wheels ; )

I kinda wanted the 2WD just for bragging rights, but from what I've read over on the Soviet Steeds forum it's mostly unnecessary and just extra maintenance. A lot of the guys say 2WD means you just get stuck 50' further down the road. European sales strongly favor the 1WD model, and they have plenty of snow and bad roads to deal with, so I figure I'll be fine. The most offroad mine will see will probably be a gravel road to a campsite.

All the sidecar models have a mechanical reverse, which I think is much more nifty.
