Pwn- great story, thanks for sayin...

One of the founders of a local club died very recently- I just happened to have the day off that they were doing his service and burial- I barely knew the guy, but he lived walking distance from my mechanic who knew him very well, and I'm about positive my Shovel has parts from him on it...

Instead of going on a solo ride like I usually do, I went to pay my respects- the crowd of bikers there was unbelievable. Actually, knowing how many folks knew and loved him, it was VERY believable- I knew most of these folks from my time at SMHD/BUELL.

The procession from the funeral home to the grave was estimated at +-170 bikes, one and two-up, made the local paper a couple of days later...

I doubt I could have spent the afternoon doing anything more worthwhile.

I've never been the "joiner" type, but knowing peeps in this community, good peeps in different local clubs, I've thought about going "probie" once or twice...

Most of the 1%'ers I know, I also consider friends- they type of friends that you KNOW will have your back if need be.

Two sides to every coin- mostly I've seen the shiny sides.

No matter where it did or did not come from, a 1%er here in the North East is an advertising member of the 1% of all bikers that are the bad-ass thugs that we all aspire to be when we grow up...

3 times as good - it's obvious!

my own M2 sports a "2 PRCNTR" vanity plate, from the time when Erik allegedly retained 2% & before the SE contingent's "3%er" thing began......

Re. origins of 1%er. . .

It did come, as mentioned a few posts back, from the Holister, Ca. "riot" in the late 40's at an AMA santioned hillclimb(from memory)event. The bad publicity about "taking over the town, roaring up and down the footpaths and riding bikes into the saloons" freaked out the American Motorcycle Assoc and they issued a press statement along the lines of "only 1% of motorcycle are rowdy, booze loving, leer-up artists( I'm paraphrasing / artistic license taking here) while the other 99% were good boy-next-door types

I road with them more than once
never regretted it.
in '07 on the way to daytona for bike week I road with a club, in parade formation, handle bar to handle bar at 95-105 mph for two and one and a halve hours from Ft. pierce to the speedway exit. I don't recommend it, but it was an experience I'll never forget.
I wouldn't hesitate to do it again

As a member of an MC, who is around 1%ers on a regular basis, I'll throw my .02 in.

Pwnsor is right in what he says. MC's first formed out of returning GI's who had seen war, felt out of place in society, and were not going to take any crap. Many, 1%ers even today are Vets.

One thing to point out, is that not all MC's are "1%er clubs", in fact most are not.

As with all segments of society, there are some real assholes. There are those who are criminals, people you don't want to spend much time around. They have earned their negative reputation and are proud of it. Some 1%ers clubs are worse than others, some chapters within the same club are worse than others. 1%ers, will always be who/what they are to a certain degree. They should not be taken lightly at all. However, the "gangs", you see on Gangland, are going the way of the dodo bird.

And then there are most of them. Guy's you need to respect, but in doing so are shown respect back. As a Bueller, I've gotten some looks, taken some crap, gotten my balls busted, but in the end have been accepted. The fact that I have earned my patch, and shown up and suited up, has earned me the respect I'm given. Some of them like my bike, and enjoy asking me questions and talking about it. Some even own or have owed a buell in the past. Most just kind of smile and shake their head, then greet me warmly and give me a hug.

I enjoy being around the 1%ers I associate with. They are family guys, who go to work, pay their bills, get a little rowdy, have fun, ride hard, and are in general good people. Some drink, others do not. None of the ones I'm around regularly do hard drugs, treat their women badly, or are douche bags. I feel safer around them, than I do some of my other friends. There is no doubt in my mind that a handful of them truly do have my back and mean it when they call me brother. As I have their's.

When snubbed by one, try to let it go. Not all are like that. In turn if they seem approachable, talk to one. strike up a conversation. You never know, you just might make a friend out of one of those dirty douche bag bikers ; )

Around here, an outlaw MC member wearing colours (colours = leather jacket with club emblem sewn onto the back) and a "1%" patch sewn near the lapel means they subscribe to a criminal life and are involved in criminal activity. Such signage is their way of advertising (intimidating) their status to others. It is also a police officers grounds to stop and investigate them if seen in a public place. Yes this has held up in court.

Your Mileage WILL vary!

According to my sources at "the history channel" a 1%er is somebody in a outlaw biker group who as xodot stated has commited a violent crime for the club. Unless if you saw gang insignia, and a 1% patch he was just another doush trying to act like a badass. Most of the real hardcases i have ever met are actually pretty cool if you dont cross them. He was probebly a dentist or roofer when he wasnt playing dress up.

Tod,

The history channel if full of outdated B.S.

Your "source" may be correct about a certain club specifically, but not in gerneral. I know 1%ers who have not comitted a violent crime for the club.

Violent crimes committed in the name of an outlaw organization will generally be denoted by the presence of a tattoo, which cannot be given away or stolen.
