Does that surprise you? I believe that it isn't what you ride but the person you are inside. Don't let it get to you...I was at a swap meet and had my Buell jacket on and over heard someone saying oh look at that he rides one of those pu$$y bikes. There were about 10 or so of them(1%). I never spoke a word. Just shook my head (inside). |

What are buell colors? I'm guessing my combination of white helmet and hi-vis jacket aren't correct "club colors"? |

If your self esteem is so dirt-low that his opinion of your motorcycle actually matters, you need PROFESSIONAL help. I bet he also resents your ladyfriend for having a mouth full of teeth too. |

Why if I had been in the situation of being snub(b)ed or scorned for my freaking colors, I would have killed every man, woman, and child within a 100 mile radius. That way, my sense of dignity and self worth would have been kept intact. No one, and I mean (screaming now) NO ONE MAY BESMEARCH MY SELF IMAGE!!! WOAH JACK!!! DON'T EFF WITH ME MAAAN!!! Most are lame turds of society. Brush it off. He'll be dead, in prison, or strung out on meth sooner or later. |

Those people make me giggle on the inside. Quite possibly the dumbest concept in modern day society... "Hey, lets form a gang, claim some turf, and break the law!" ... "Yeah, that will make us ALL feel better about ourselves." I saw a group of riders come across the Hoover Dam last month and they were swerving their bikes around acting like they were going to hit the pedestrians. Hammering the throttles open with their open pipes and making rude gestures and flipping people off. I won't name the colors I saw but I certainly was a disgrace. I just turned to my buddy and said... "Those are the kind of clowns that give motorcyclists a bad name..." |

Truthfully my experience with the so called 1% have all been cordial. Never been insulted or felt slighted. I don't claim to know much about it/them, but I have met a few and have never regretted it. Were you wearing the pink Buell hat? |

Except for one incident in Sturgis way back in 1999, my one and only venture there--once is enough--my limited experience is the same as Jon's. Mostly just a bunch of very enthusiastic motorheads. It's too bad they don't hold road racing in as high regard as drag racing. If anyone took to calling my Buell a sissy bike, I'd offer to meet them at the race track. |

Original poster - the snubed you? I mean, they just say something bad or what? I've had many situations with MCs, all have been fine. For the most part they're just regular dudes I've raced several of them at local events as well national, never had an issue, they were there for the same reason as everyone else - have a good time. Some people are dicks, there are cockheads in every group of people (I know a few Buell owners I've met that were equally as obnoxious, for example), its just how it goes. Dont judge a group by one or two individuals |

Years ago, I rode my XL350 cafe' bike to Daytona....along come a couple of 1%ers..the biggest, dirtiest one stopped and checked my bike over very closely....he looked over and said...."hey shortchit...is this f**kin' thing yours??? I said yeah, sure enuff is...he smiled and said loudly "that is the best lookin piece of rice sh*t I have ever seen....then walked off. My first experiences at motorcycle races involved a lot of 1%ers an a flattrack in Michigan...I saw 'em get drunk and fight each other, but never bothered any body outside their group.. |

I "know" a few 1%ers and just don't get it. I mean if I were going to get together with a few like minded people to indulge in criminal behavior that would fill my pockets with loot, I certainly wouldn't broadcast the fact ! Prison is chock full of dummies and the occasional smart but really unlucky dood. |

I am not sure WHAT is meant by 1%ers Hells Angels ... maybe. They're almost "mainstream" with their legal representation... well except this silly little issue with drugs, vehicle theft, weapons and territorial pissing contests involving violence and gunplay. Vagos? Even less cutesy than the Hells Angels. Mongols? Pagans? I like riding bikes - but just because THEY ride, gives me NO REASON to feel connected. "Charity rides?" YOu gotta be kidding. I enjoy shooting sports but don't feel any more connected because they have guns too. I'm willing to bet that you all have met SMART criminals - and never knew it. |

Yeah, the pink Buell hat might have gone over badly. Long-haired men in buttless chaps can make you really popular in two entirely different crowds in two entirely different kinds of bars. |

There are idiots in every segment of society. I remember Portagee Ed's funeral, at least 150 bikers there, some from opposing factions. Choppers, bobbers, customs of all types... and of course the trike hearse. ...and then there was my brand new, bright red with orange wheels, 2004 XB12R. The chapel was overflowing with people and when we all came out to load Ed on the trike, there were a couple of Mongols eyeballing my ride. One of them saw me, and rather politely informed me that I couldn't ride in the main column, when his friend said "no, wait a minute look at the motor that's a Harley man!" I rode point. After the military honors and 21 gun salute were given, we all took turns shoveling dirt into the hole and said goodbye to Ed. After that I had quite a few people checking out the bike, and quite a few compliments along the lines of "f*ckin-A man, look at all that new technology". Edward Machado "Portagee Ed" was a decorated veteran of the Viet Nam War. Not all 1%'ers are the same. These are some good people.

So a 1% er is just somebody on a bike who considers himself to be different than 99% of the folks? (of course, I mean HIM - since no womenfolk are allowed) |

My understanding of a 1%er is: A Full Member of an "Outlaw" Motorcycle Club. "Outlaw" meaning a club that is not sanctioned or otherwise affiliated with the AMA for whatever reason. They make their own rules. Some are involved in organized crime, other are not, while still others have "good" chapters and "bad" chapters. Again, that's my understanding of it. The guys I know are mostly war vets who returned home from defending our way of life and found themselves being shit on in one way or another by the government and hippy war protesters. They seek the comradery and brotherhood they knew in the trenches and jungles and in the air, and on the seas. They have, for one reason or another, felt cast out or set aside. |

1% is a term from long ago. It refers to the 1% of competitive motorcyclists involved in racing that were not accepted by the AMA. "Outlaw" is a similar term that fits a little better today. |

I'm pretty sure the term "1%er" was coined after a peice of junk news published in the late 40's that depcited bikers in Hollister, CA as rowdy and destructive. The reporters and photographers had the bikers pose with booze and such, but it's was all staged for the 'story'. It inspired the movie 'The Wild One' with Marlon Brando. Shortly after, someone said that "only 1% of motorcyclist are actually like that." Bam. You want to be a badass, you have to be in that 1%. link to story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollister_riot |
