Seems like this would be a golden opportunity for Erik Buell Racing to ramp up their website.
BTW Court, I've noticed Erik_Buell_Racing seems to do most of their updating/advertising at the Rat Pack Records site. Is there some legal motivation behind this? |

Hey Court, you said you still have the first website stuff saved? It wouldn't happen to be all the original HTML files would it? I'd love to see a screenshot. I didn't get into Buell until 2006... it'd be cool to see some of the really early stuff from the web.

Oh how I miss that Buell® Regulator Mock Neck. Perhaps one of the best shirts ever made. Of course . . the time that HD sent Erik and I to an event and asked us to wear them it was 104oF at the dealer meeting in San Antonio.
I think I have examples of most those accessories floating around here in various boxes and stuff. I ran onto a box of the old Buell® Fairing Camp Shirt and there are some of the sunglassses, in Buell cases, around here. They used to keep cases of them in the demo trucks.
Great memories . .
Dig the fact that there were actually E-MAIL ADDRESSES . . so you know that was VERY early. One HD found out folks could write both nice things and not so nice things . . the owners chat area and e-mail disappeared pronto.
I also still have . . along with all the M.I.T. sweat shirts they gave me . . all the files (like 3 copies of the notebooks) of the Buell Internet Development project we did in Cambridge, MA. It was light years ahead of it's time. I flew to San Fran, rode a red 1996 S1 onto the stage of the Cow Palace and presented a blurb about it. Thanks to WOZ for keeping me out of trouble in San Fran.
That's where I met Bill Gates . . who was speaking next. When I was introduced I asked him "who do you work for?". He had a good sense of humor. I also still have all the pics of that event (Thanks again to THE WOZ) and the JAVA shirts that were given away.
HD . . when the saw the video made at the Harvard Faculty Club scrubbed the project IMMEDIATELY and it quickly gained status as "that of which we do not speak" as did almost anything innovative Buell came up with . . . . well, that HD didn't have.
I'll never forget the words . . . " . . . over my dead body will Buell get anything HD doesn't have". [spoken at a secret off site meeting at the Italian Conference Center in Milwaukee, WI]
Turns out . . . well, he's dead and it looks like Buell's going to get it.
Life's funny.
There's so much you folks really need to be told . . .

Court the next Buell book does not need to be a coffee table book. One with more story line would be appropriate. Kind of like a Buell version of Shattered Sword. |

That's BIG RED ( I think . . Brankin can confirm) on the dyno.
I'm laughing at the shirt Gary is wearing. Mike Hilman, then President of Buell Distribution, had like 1,000 of those left from and event and didn't want them. I got home one day and there are like 6 cases of shirts at the front door.
I hauled them, and some of the now quite rare LAP OF AMERICA shirts, with me as I traveled all over the county and gave them away. During about 1996 and 1997 I arranged my work schedule to allow me to hit all the IMS shows and put lots of those shirts in circulation.
I've got the photo of BIG RED's tail section on my desktop from the day that Doug Domokos visited the factory.
There's an oddity about motorcycle geometry. . something like if the bodywork extends past the imaginary vertical line tangent with the surface of the rear tire . . well, you can drag it.
Doug marked a spot on the parking lot with a lumber crayon and with a group of us assembled proceeded to wipe the mark off with the tail section of Erik's BIG RED.
Doug rode back up in front of the assembled group, jumped off the bike and autographed the tail section.
The dual discs on that bike were part of the research that got the dual disc brake kit quickly pulled off the market.
Fun stuff.

Big Red, I took that bike home for a weekend. It was fun and I am lucky I didn't get arrested. You can get going pretty fast on some of the longer on/off ramps around here
Actually it is pretty amazing how few of us got arrested. The East Troy and Mukwonago cops were very understanding |

Yes, Court's right, that is BIG RED pictured on the dyno - complete with dual disc front end. Which just happens to be where the dual disc setup I have came from. Now if I just had a 2nd S2 to put it on - for display purposes only...but back to BIG RED...
From my recollection of the details; Axtell cylinders, big bore (of course), with 102 rwhp. It was a little noisier mechanically than a stock S2 (go figure), but as Bret proved it could be passed off as a stock bike in a little late night acceleration trials...I think I should quit there...

I accumulated plenty of pink pieces of paperwork from both East Troy and Mukwonago, including one on S1W VIN # 1 from Mukwonago.
GREAT memories - yeah, even with the tickets, I wouldn't change anything...

. . . . Court's got a memory like a steel trap . . OLD AND RUSTY.
Memories of the night I told the guy in the bar . . who wouldn't seat us . . that I was an Astronaut there to give a speech and he immediately seated Marty (who I explained was a visiting Cosmonaut with his firery red hair and goatee) and I.
Afterward we were headed back to I-94 when trouble found us . . . a guy on a Sportster pulled along Marty and started wrapping up his motor.
Poor judgment.
Later that night . . Marty was teaching me a wheelie trick on a dark back street in a poor part of town. Folks were laying on the sidewalk, taking in the show.
I wrote a story called "Wheelies for the Homeless" and was immediately called to visit with the Corporate Communications folks at 3700.
It was the next day that trouble hit . . . in the form of Officer Whatever (name started with an M and he was a legend in the area of Exit 36).
NONE OF THIS IS TRUE. . . and is provided solely for recreational entertainment.
How long ago ? ? . . . well . . . let me just say . . Dave Gess had dark hair, I was skinny and Brankin looked like a college kid . . . to the extent Brankin can.
I suppose the story of Marty splitting the bike in half can't be far behind . . . |
