Not wanting to high jack another thread, and because it keeps coming up...
I want one.
I was trying to figure out what to get next, and I have to agree with Panhead_dan.
One of the reasons I bought the Buell was for the simplicity.
I really dig the high technology and engineering that makes it handle better than most.
But, at it's heart, it's a simple machine.
I like simple machines, and I like being a machine operator.
A simple machine for a simple man.

Cafe'Racer I'm thinking.

A 10 mph tail wind?

A Ural has been very high on my want list for a couple of years now. The movie Eastern Promise push me over the edge from those are cool to I really need to see one in person. I really like the non-hack version they recently came out with.

Dont get me wrong, I'd love a hack so Jack (my Poodle) could ride with me, but I just dont have enough room to store something that big.

As far as being a conversation starter...it cant be much worse than my Bonnie.

I also like the idea. You can learn a lot about living with a Ural from the "ride reports" at the Adventure Rider Forum. Urals are pretty popular with the ADV crowd.

One of the best reports is this cross-country tour by Mr. Cobb:

off to ukraine this spring, I hope I can make a junket to visit the factory

from my friend Natalya
"motorcycles are fast and dangerous, you should be careful'
what about the ural ?
'you mean the dnepr? can I come ?'

say no more, nudge nudge wink wink - it is the next 'bike' to the garage.

(Kiev has license to build them and of course they know the Ukrainian version is superior to the Siberian...or German - just ask them, they will tell you such ! )

I wouldn't have the solo bike, but I definitely want the side car, Tourist model, with leading link fork.

There's plenty of big singles, for simple road bikes.

We're on the same page.
The more I thought about it, the better it sounds.
Camping in the Great North Georgia Mountains, being able to go most anywhere, fire roads, old stage coach trails (they're really nice if you know where to look), being able to carry damn near everything, I'm in!

I've been hankering for a Ural for years.
My wife (who doesn't ride at all) has even said one would be neat. I take that as permission to add one to the garage...
I need to add another stall first... too many toys.

Urals are fun...but "slow" doesn't begin to describe it.

Seriously.

Ride one first. It's kinda like a '23 Model T I drove recently. Very cool, big grin factor...but for my purposes (transportation), TOTALLY useless.

But the 2wd is still tempting. Think snow : ) If only the budget would allow a "winter only" bike....

Urals are fun...but "slow" doesn't begin to describe it.

The ride thread at ADVrider by Mr. Cobb that I linked above illustrates that well. IIRC, about 70 MPH tops on level pavement, once completely broken in (and they DO have to be broken in). Another factor to consider is gas mileage in the mid-30's.

The "standard" model in Glitch's photo at the top of the thread may do a lot better in both respects. I'm sure the sidecar rig adds several hundred pounds to the weight of the thing. Mr. Cobb posted a shorter ride report on that model when it came out last (?) year. Unfortunately that ride ended early when he crashed and broke his collar bone. Not sure if he ever got around to picking that ride report back up or not.

I was just talking to a Ural nut at the Javitts show last night. He said the 70MPH thing is largely due to the sidecar adding a massive amount of wind resistance. I am on their mailing list now and will be invited to their open house / demo ride at the NJ dealer this spring.

Here's a link to Mr. Cob's ride report on the Ural "Solo ST" (2-wheeled model) from ADVrider:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59 8685&highlight=ural+solo

He even worked with the U.S. Ural guys to build the prototype bike.

Yup, I'm lusting for one pretty hard right now myself. They're supposed to be at the Great American Motorcycle Show in Norcross this upcoming weekend, and that's the only reason I'm going. I originally wanted the hack-less sT, but I find myself really drifting toward a sidecar model. The sheer novelty of it would be enough, but my wife said she would actually ride with me for once! She won't set foot near my Buell.

FYI, supposedly the sT has a recommended cruising speed of 70 mph with a top speed of 90 mph, and mpg in the low 40's.

Hey, nice pics above, BTW!

Okay, so I'm reading the ride report done by Mr. Cob that Hugh posted above. About 40+ pages in.... I'm TOTALLY sold. I MUST have one of these machines.

Another interesting note: Cob stays with a LOT of hosts on his trip, people from both ADVrider and Sovietsteeds. I've actually lost count of the number of Buell Ulysses that keep showing up in the trip pics. Popular bike among that crowd!

Just a little bit of information i ran across.

Ural has 158 employees, only 8 of which are here in the US to handle assembly, warranty rebuilds, and new engineering designs.

Check out these pics from the home office!

SM- glad you enjoyed Mr. Cob's report. He's probably done more to sell Urals here than all their advertising.

I saw the first Ural I've ever seen outside of a showroom last week. It was a "Gear Up" on a street just a couple of miles from where I work. I think I'm starting to understand the attraction...

I'm waiting to see who, out of all of us that have said they want one, pulls the trigger first.
