as it stands right now, some turd tried to break into my shed and today when the wife got home from work, the the outer glass panel in the back door was broken and they tried to jimmy the side door. cops called and got what finger prints that they can from things found around there. the part that sucks is that my wife is home by herself as some of you might know that i'm out of town working. which isn't something i really want to broadcast but i have to come up with plan "B" quick. a good buddy went out and picked up some barbwire to temporalily feel in a hole in the fence that i never fixed when part of a tree fell years ago and looking at getting that fence put back up hire pretty soon but i have to much stuff to worry about not to mention the wife and her lasaapsa. i don't like whay i'm seeing about "protect america" and not even really "ADT" regardless of how well known they are and i really don't want another dog. one is enough. does anyone have one that they are happy with and hasn't had to worry about getting burned by some hardcore salesman. when i tried to tell the protect america saleskid that i had to get off the phone and call my wife back, he started to get beligerant with me telling me that i can't hang up on him. of which i did anyhow. i just need some good input. i don't need my wife to worry.

he looked at a gun this past weekend and we will most likely buy one very soon. Problem is this,,, this is most likely middle school kids that are skipping school and have discovered our back yard is a perfect party area. Now it appears they have gone a step or 2 beyond. So these events have happened during the day when we are at work.

If it's kids, you may only need a loud mean acting dog. Not permanently, just to borrow long enough for the kids to find somewhere else to go. Know anyone with a big loud dog?

As far as guns go, I'd recommend a nice pump action shot gun. If they're with in ear shot, just cocking it will put fear in damn near anyone.

You could get more than just an alarm, remote cameras are cheaper than ever before. Just don't hide them, and use as many as you can afford. Then put up signs saying the property is under video surveillance.

I hate to hear y'all are having difficulties.
Try not to worry, get mad, think straight, and carry a big stick.

blast, (want an scg "again")
I'm sure you don't want Neil to "break it in" either. ; )

Good luck y'all, with any luck it'll be kids and y'all will scare them off extra soon.

Set wolf traps all around. A broken finger or tow should stop most kids.

Stay home a few days.

Hire a house sitter.

Come home for lunch.

Go to the school truant officer and let them know.

Talk to the police chief about having extra patrols.

Put a cattle fencer up at all the screens and doors.

Sounds like kids, real asshats would have been in and out and your insurance company would be raising your rates.

Just a few off the top of my head. Good luck.

I can't holler loud enough about the benefits of reinforced door jambs and good solid deadbolts.

Relatively inexpensive and easy to install. When an exterior door is closed it should not wiggle or rattle. At all.

Personally I don't trust "security" companies. Sure, they can be of help if nobody is home... but when I had one we just ended up paying a lot of fees for false alarms. We switched companies three times and got similar results.

Our new house will get webcams with motion sensors that I can monitor from my Droid.

Good luck. Hopefully it is just kids screwing around.

Was home 3 days last week with flu, did think about the house sitter. Neighbors and son will start coming by to check although I'm sure this will wear off... Deputy last night put us in for security checks. School truant officer was a complete waste of time, did however send an e-mail to the school principal this morning. LOL cattle fence, helped a friend of ours put barbed wire on the back fence.
Worried not really, just really po'd and REALLY hoping they show today....

Sadly it's going around down here Neil. My buddy's wife's car was stolen last week. Cops have no leads. A guy I work with, his car was broken into. His gun and IPOD was stolen. No leads there as well. They both live off of 33. Broadview is who I have. They are great. $150 down with the install and about $40 a month after that. We accidently tripped the alarm once and they called literally with in 2 mins.

I travel a bit as you know and you've seen the dogs I have. My wife no longer worries when I leave. We never had to worry about anything and never locked our doors. But since they've turned the cow pasture beside me into a housing development we figured it would be best to get an alarm. Someone will be hard up if they can get past the alarm AND 4 dogs.

Best of luck Neil and you know if you need ANYTHING don't hesitate to give me a call!

Neil, I agree on the CWP. I just purchased the new Ruger LCR 38dpl +P this weekend. Easy to carry and not terribly expensive.

Also sensors with a very loud alarm should do the trick. Just like horns, the alarms come in various decibels. It's the alarm that deters mischief. Like someone else pointed out, if they were professionals, they would have been in and out and way before the law could have been there.

That being said; my security company is great. (Active Security) Not pushy and is willing to add or subtract anything I need at my request. If you need any help, you have my number. I can help with the alarm or with helping Diane navigate the gun purchase or finding a place to get the CWP if she doesn't already have one. Let me know.

Screw a big stick! Go buy a shotgun and a couple small handguns. I personally favor my 9 for the right hand and my 38 for the left :-)

Had a scare the other day, I know my fat ass looked goofy as hell in my boxers with 2 guns running around the backyard at 4 am. Haha

But for the lady a shotgun with small grain ammo.
If she's like my wife, that shotgun will hurt like hell to fire, but better then what can happen.

+1 in the reinforced door jams!! Go buy some long screws to replace all the short ones in the plates on the doors.

Yep, forget ADT, Brinks or other national company. When they get an alarm in Calif, a light goes off in Topeka,KS. Not the kind of response I want.

If you want to go burglar alarm then get a local company that monitors central station locally. They can hook you up with cameras and recording equipment.

Or you can just put a sign on you lawn that says "This premises monitored by ______ Alarm Co". Toss a couple of fake cameras on the walls and you'll stop 95% of the bad guys.

IMO, a local alarm (one that just rings a bell mounted on the side of your house) is next to worthless. When's the last time anyone heard an alarm and went to investigate?

Not even. I had a call a few ago that soured me to them. Alarm compamy never even made any contact. Some of the problem is the set up.

I have checked the neighbors house every time her alarm has sounded when I have been home.

Every time my alarm goes off at the shop. My neighbor calls me on my cell(if he is at work).

The one time that someone actually tried to rob my shop(in this location), the offenders backed a truck up to the door and grabbed a big chunk of asphalt to break the glass in the door. When the door was jarred, the alarm went off and it scared the would be robbers. They took off, evidently with the tailgate still down and lost the contents of the back of the truck. Yep, some brand spanky new beach chairs, an umbrella and some other items. Now if there could be an attempted robbery by a full Brinks truck....yeah.

12 gauge rock salt first round, next round all business.

i always did the bird shot first round, deer slug second. if winging them with the first one isnt enough, then atleast i tried. the second one will not be so polite.

only had to use the wing them shot once. never had to follow up with the second.

but ive always been the person that says if your going to aim a gun at me you better pull the trigger. most people wont. of the handful of times ive had a gun aimed at me, only one time was the person willing to shoot at me(crazy old senile coot, thought i was on his property in the timber when it was my families... peppered me and the bike as well as my friend but was far enough away no serious injury was caused) the other people have just received a severe beating and proceeded to donate there gun to my cause.

i guess my advice on buying a gun as protection is that your mind/soul has to be on the same page as your trigger finger. if you have any doubts that you could shoot another person, then dont buy a gun. that can turn a bad situation into worse for you.

two rows of concertina wire, or punji sticks angled downward so he would be stuck or if he did get out you would be able to find him fast cause he would be the one limping away!

just a couple of thoughts,

Blake, that would have been on funniest home videos for sure. Those who have met me can probably imagine that I am NOT the fastest runner. I am determined though. The mugger had some clothing issues (pants hanging low) and I was really mad or I probably would have had to chase him further. It was in Atlantic City. The lady (muggee)said the ironic thing is that her daughter is a cop in the Bronx.

Diane, I hope they will treat you as well as they have treated us.

Triple ought buck every shot. I don't plan on winging anyone. I practice shooting center mass. And I don't make warning sounds chambering a round, it's already in the tube.
