He put me up one weekend when I was stuck there in the winter & the truck heater was broken. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/boar d-profile.cgi?action=view_profile&profile=brineusa f-users I'll be moving to near the Swiss border myself in a few months time so possibility of a ride/meet somewhere when I'm settled. |

I was at Ramstein from 2000-2005. Bought my first Buell from Exchange New Car sales! %90 of the roads out in the country are spectacular rides. Easiest one to find is just outside the back gate up at Landstuhl Hospital.... Enjoy it man. Best assignment in the world. No contest. |

I had a friend stationed at Ram and just left there about 7 weeks ago, he lived in Landstahl (hope I spelled right) I went to visit him last September for a week, man, what a country! I am hoping to go back next year, we'll see. If you go to Landstahl - go to the Doner place on the main road, guy that runs it is Carl, its so delicious! Great ice cream place next to it as well. |

Thanks for the tips. I certainly see what you guys say about the roads. I'm itching to get my bikes out here. Oh, Pepperk496, funny you mention that road to LRMC. That just so happens to be the road I take to go to where I work right next door at the satellite center there. I think I might be riding to work each day... Kc, certainly hit me up when you're coming through again. Haven't seen the 1878 here yet, will look for it. Maybe the class 6 has it. Grumpy, thanks for the links. Will check those things out. Anyone around stationed out here at this time? |

Don't forget to take the Autobahn, and stay out of the left lane unless you're doing 100 or better. Basti, on here, lives in Bamburg. Bamburgerrauchbier, smoked hops, brewed on site. Rothenburg, tourist trap of an old town. Visit grumpy after he moves. |

Got a question on the tech side folks. My wife has a nook from Barnes and Nobles (an e-reader). Well, we're finding one problem with it. That is with us being over here we can't order books on or off base from their website for the nook. We're told this has to do with copyrights. Now, we were informed at B&N that they worked out a solution for military folks and they would work on base. It appears that's not true or we're doing something wrong. Well, guys in my unit suggested a proxy setup for this as another way to make it work. Don't know if anyone has any experience with using a proxy, but I was wondering how I would go about doing that? Like what things would I have to know to make it work? |

Excuse my ignorance, what (apart from & niche in a wall) is a nook? |

Cataract, hate to say it but you're SOL with your nook reader. B&N won't allow purchases from overseas IP addresses and their online store isn't based upon your billing address like kindle. The only way around it is to use a US based proxy for your entire network. Good luck. I'm stationed in Italy and have the same problem. |

Well, I guess we can always just send e-mails to the parents or my brother and sister in law to make the purchases for the nook. Just a small inconvenience, but can still make it happen. As far as we can tell, once you purchase it you can get it on the nook. |

When you are on the base, how are you getting Internet access? Through the base? Are they private IP addresses, or public? If they're private, they're being translated (NAT) to a public IP, so B&N should be able to allow purchases from that IP. If you're getting a public IP from some ISP that operates on the base, B&N is likely unaware that you are on the base. You could be anywhere that ISP operates in that region. There are plenty of open proxies on the Internet. Be aware though that if they are proxying https, they could be reading everything you send, like credit card numbers. If the proxy is an ssl gateway, your ssl connection is to the proxy, and another is created between the proxy and the site. The owner of the proxy sees everything in its unencrypted state. I personally wouldn't trust a random open proxy I found through a google search. If I were you I would pursue getting B&N to accept the public IP of the base. You can find your public IP by going to: http://whatismyip.org |

Thanks for the info Hootowl. So, got a car. Decided on a 1990 VW Golf 2 diesel. From what I could find on that car it's not uncommon for it to get low to mid 40 mpg's. Not bad. Car is clean and recently passed inspection Sept 13 2010. Think this car will do us good for the time being. Couldn't pass up a diesel VW with mpg like that. |

I can confirm those MPG estimates. There are a few things you can do to increase those numbers too, as long as you keep your foot out of it. A new fuel map is good for about a 25% HP increase. The stock map is very conservative. |

Not on a 1990 model. It'll be a mechanical pump. Try hotspotshield to hide your IP for your kook/nindle whatever the hell it is. I use it for going on Pandora, sometimes you have to give it 2 or 3 shots before it randomly assigns an acceptable IP. Or you could always go to the base library & actually turn the pages! |

I kinda thought it was a mechanical diesel setup. Hm, time to tinker... Anyways, hoping this sucker does me good. I do know someone who has a 1970's VW Rabbit (Golf in the states) and it still runs well to this day. He uses it for the gas millage. |

If it's running well I wouldn't touch it. Regular oil & filter changes & a diesel filter before the winter sets in. Don't try hammering it flat out in the outside lane of the autobahn, it won't like it. If you treat it well, it will look after you & you'll be able to resell it for what you paid for it. If you want to look at other things for sale, www.autoscout24.com or www.mobile.de |

I forget that there are some younger members on here sometimes. Got a nice PM with a ?. 'Don't mention the war' is one of the all-time classic comedy sketches from John Cleese's 'Fawlty Towers'. Breakthrough stuff at the time. It's on you tube. |
