I don't think it's correct, I can't find that Buell bit anywhere else. Swampy?

To quote my self,

It's about outside influences. MV, it's not funny, or sad, it's fishy.

AND they get buell patents?

It's underhanded B.S. Some deal was struck long ago. This has been in the works. HD can look stupid, dumb, foolish, whatever! - Somebody knew what was going on and had a plan. Somebody some where is smiling huge, and with a huge wallet.

This is not sad. It's disgusting and revolting.

When Erik's restraints from HD are removed, I hope he writes a tell all book. I also think it'd make a great movie.

Look at "World's Fastest Indian". It was a great movie, and the plot wasn't nearly as interesting as the Buell story.

If true it's worse then disgusting it's treason! So you rob Eric of patents that should be rightfully his and sell or just give them away to a foreign company?

"It was reported in several online Italian publications that Claudio and Giovanni Castiglioni may have bought back the brand for one symbolic euro with the understanding that MV Agusta would enjoy ongoing and additional financial support from Harley-Davidson."

If you think Harley-Davidson sold MV Agusta for one symbolic euro, YOU NEED PSYCHOLOGICAL HELP!

"with the understanding that MV Agusta would enjoy ongoing and additional financial support from Harley-Davidson."

Was this CRAP thought-up by a Third-grader?

Patches,

They had no problem taking a $125,000,000+ hit on closing Buell, so why does this sound so unbelievable? It cleans their plate of everything except what they need to focus on, their core brand.

"$125,000,000+ hit on closing Buell"

Buell Motorcycle Company was the Lowest Preforming 'Product Line' within Harley-Davidson. That's why they stopped Production. The $125,000,000+ too Close Buell was probably a Tax Right-off.

Harley and MV never even got off the ground.

dude flush out the headgear
tax write off?
you got to have it to write it off.
They are something to the tune of 70% off production, borrowing money from Buffet, closing dealers and laying off people left and rightand threatning to move production lines.
they don't have it to write off.
They should have sold Buell and MV augusta as a package deal and they would at least have some money back in the coffers and wrote the rest off. That would make more business sense but who needs that they are

Thanks to HD I no longer have my long time desire (obsession?) to build a Twin Sports Sportster replica. They saved me a lot of $$$$...

Patches we will know the real number soon enough as HD will have to report it to the SEC at some point BUT not listing a price in the press release is instructive. If it was a nice sum being paid to HD they would have included the price in the PR. Since they didn't it can't be good news.

No it doesn't, but it does have an awful paint job that makes it look like it has side pods on. I always thought it would be impossible to make an MV look hideous, but this just proves me wrong : (

i yust saw one of those mv's at ducpond motorsports this past saturday, & it's freaking beautiful. it doesn't look like it has side pods... this pic above is a poor pic...

regarding buell's production being stopped; who cares that its "product line performance" was low. it was pure idiocy for h-d to spend even a penny to shut it down, let alone >100 million dollars, when they had serious buyers. that's not taking into consideration why buell's "product line performance" was low - h-d's unbelievably piss-poor marketing and development assistance...

"Serious buyers" meaning BRP buying Buell the company, not you and I getting individual Buells for half off.

patches, i am talking about serious buyers for the company, not for the individual bikes.

but, regarding the bikes, with the half-a**ed marketing, and half-a**ed product dewelopment nowhere near what eric wanted, buells still did all right, in spite of the fact that you had to endure entering a h-d dealership to look at 'em and buy 'em... i can only imagine how well buell woulda done w/proper marketing & product support.

I'm just not sure where you're going with this!

From Asphalt & Rubber:

"There has to be a bevy of high-fives going on in Milwaukee right now, as Harley-Davidson has finally unloaded MV Agusta from its holdings (we broke the news on the purchase earlier this morning). Harley-Davidson bought MV Agusta for $109 million back in 2008 (most of which was bad debt), and now just a little over two years later is making a tidy profit of…well, nothing. After wiping the books clean, investing in new infrastructre, and getting MV Agusta back on track with an all new model line-up (with a bike on the way), Harley-Davidson saw a paltry sum of €1 cross its desks. Harley-Davidson shares are down 3.5% as of this writing.

Instead Harley-Davidson is calling things even with the Castiglioni family, who would have seen a stock pay-out had the company exchanged hands with another buyer, like TPG for instance. The Castiglioni’s stock was worth somewhere between €20-€30 million, and now with 100% ownership, the Italians are free to once again run MV Agusta into the ground, just like they did leading up to 2008.

Harley-Davidson & MV Agusta press releases are after the jump. One interesting point of note that taking the helm of MV Agusta is former Ducati General Manager and Chief Engineer Massimo Bordi. Bordi was once offered the job of CEO at Ducati, but turned it down, and the position was filled by Gabriele del Torchio, Ducati’s current CEO. Bordi’s last item of business at Ducati was trying to sell the Italian brand to Harley-Davidson, which makes for some good irony in today’s announcement.
"

Once again the 1 euro figure comes up. Original article: http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/harley-davids on-sells-mv-agusta-castiglioni/

Maybe I'm stoopid, but I'm not understanding the middle paragraph. The Castiliogni's still had stock in MV? I thought H-D had bought 100% of MV?

€1? Looks like H-D paid €19,999,999 to Castiglioni to take MV back.

As reported earlier, Castiglioni purchased MV Agusta for the nominal sale price of €1, but digging into the terms of the agreement, it’s Harley-Davidson who is really paying out the big dollar amounts. In their agreement Harley-Davidson agrees to leave MV Agusta with a dowry of roughly €20 million (+/- minus fees and profits incurred), with €7 million of that cash infusion coming up-front. The rest of the sum will be paid in escrow with equal monthly installments, over a 12 month period starting on August 20th, 2010.

http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/mv-agusta-pur chase-details/

H-D should hire Castiglioni as CEO, this man is a financial genius.

I don't get it. So HD paid to close Buell, but is paying the buyer of MV to keep it open?

I wish I could buy a new Vette for a dollar and then have Chevy pay me a bunch of money to keep driving it.

Would it not have made more financial sense for HD to simply close MV rather than pay someone to take it from them?

Oh yeah, I remember. MV wasn't "integrated" so it's OK.

"...Castiglioni also agreed to absolve Harley-Davidson of any legal proceedings and liability the Italian businessman had been pursuing related to the sale of MV Agusta, which left unresolved would have tied up the purchase of MV Agusta for years.

The lawsuit filed in Italian courts by Castiglioni is certainly the linchpin in this purchase agreement, as any lengthy legal proceeding would have cost Harley-Davidson considerably, regardless of the final judgment...."

Now I get it.

So did Castiglioni screw H-D, or did H-D manage to piss off the Italians to the point of going to court?
