Well. if you're attentive and have a really good memory of things that don't matter you might remember almost 2 years ago when I drug home a 74 Honda CB750 with a locked up motor.
This bike:


Well, I tore it down the motor was really stuck and not wanting to come loose. So I found a parts bike with a better motor
This one:


I fished chopping brackets off the frame from it and shortened it about 6 inches in my pursuit of a cafe racer.

I had a crappy little shed with no heat and the walls were too thin and gaping cracks to work in the winter, so I rolled it into the house for wiring it




Well, I didn't get it all done, but mostly. Then I moved. Had to do a LOT of remodeling on the house, still not done. But work on the bike is coming now and then.
Finally got the bodywork and paint done. This is the tins before clearcoat:


Also drilled the rear brake drum, but no pics of that right now.

Finally tonight the bug bit my ass hard, so I finished what was left of the wiring (had to go to an automotive starter solenoid) factory one crapped out and this was easier with my connections.
Now everything is there and working.
Will be ordering my brake line kit this week. Then need grips and my seat pan upholstered.

Tomorrow I might get brave and try putting some gas in it....

Very nice!!! I will always have a soft spot for the old CB750. They were the very first mega reliable motorcyle. I know of 3 that have over 100K on them with no major engine problems other than the common oil weeps from the cylinder head intermediate casting. (there is a cure for that little problem if it pops up on your engine. And if you ever have the head off the motor, Wiseco still builds the 836cc bore kit for that motor.And if it has the breaker points ignition, it can be easily replaced with a Dynatec Dyna S ignition that is stone reliable.

One word of caution: (in case you don't know) Looks like you have a 530 chain on it...if you break the chain, it WILL destroy the engine cases if the chain wads up on the front sprocket...so be careful with wheelies and burnouts and such.

looking great. my first road bike was the cb550 back in the navy and that's when i learned how much i like curves. but then i saw a poster of the xlcr at the nato base in naples italy and the bug had bit. can't wait to see your bike finished.

Looks nice, sure is a pretty engine with the curves and polished cases and cooling fins in all the right places.

The paint sure pops out at you.

Beautiful. Those bikes hold a special place in my heart. So many memories, so many miles. Great looking bike.

The headlight is from a little 125ish Suzuki bike. I'm going to guess early 70's as well. Found it on a bike at a junkyard and had to have it with that odd shape.

All aluminum components (levers and brake caliper/cylinder) were bead blasted and hit with a scotch brite for a raw finish.

Cafe tail I made out of an old kawi dirt bike gas tank I found in a junk yard one day. 1 light is on for tail, all 3 come on for brake. Amazing how bright 3 little LED setups are.

I know the woes of the chain, and don't plan on having the front end in the air, but hopefully the rear will be smoking and sliding now and then.

Gotta go measure out a brake line and get that on order along with some grips. Then get after my upholstery guy (dad) to get my seat done. It will be Ivory vynil tuck-n-roll with lime green stitching.

The lift is a Harbor Frieght special. Its borrowed or I'd mod it just a bit. Handee sells their front wheel chock for $75 bucks. That would make this thing perfect. Really pretty sturdy even with that heavy ass bike I can get up on the lift too and not feel too scared.

The tripple tail came as a happy accident. The area it is in is where the "tank" used to attach to the bike. Was going to form a cat eye to the shape of it, but then my dad got the idea to use these LED dots. Looks way cooler and is super bright. I'll have to take some lit pics of it.

Didn't get any work done this weekend, spent my time in the garage building shelves as it seems I never have quite enough storage space. This week is my Spring Break, so between house stuff and yard stuff I hope to put some gas in the tank and try to fire it up

Oh that bike is killer, it makes me long for my 76 CB 500T. I never should have sold it, but it helped finance the X1!!

Awesome! Love the color, too. A guy across the alley from me is building a very similar bike, out of a sweet running, low mileage cream puff that he found in a guy's quonset on a nearby farm. I know where there a couple of nice ones tucked away in a building in a ghost town about an hour and a half from here; literally in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, I've got to score a VW Beetle for my wife before I can start anymore projects!

Glitch, if the tail piece were off you'd be able to see what was chopped. The last 6 inches of the frame are gone. Where the crossmember for the rear of the seat should be to the end. Frame now ends just past where the shocks attach.

I've got a pic of the chop somewhere too. Didn't change wheelbase any.

saw one in person this past weekend @ San Jose's excellent All-British Show [Vintage Asian M/Cs displayed in an adjoining bldg] -
shiny scoop is pretty well-made & looks even cooler than BCR's site's foto

mebbe as good a piece is 1 of Benji's other gems, an excellent headlite holder - a U-shaped fabrication which eliminates fork ears yet mounts both h'lite & blinkers

I reccommend em both !
