1. apparently the engine doesn't over-rev when you put it in Neutral with a stuck throttle?
2. they're pushbutton start. My first thought when I heard about the moron in Cali who had time enough to A) call 911 and B) let a cop get in front of him and slow him down was....TURN OFF THE F'N KEY!!!!!!
But apparently there is no key. 'splains that one (shrug)

It is completely electronic. The thing can rev to redline if the computer decides it wants to. It only sees your foot input as what you want to do, the computer decides whats best for you.

Yep, I mention that in every thread. There actually is a key, its hidden inside the keyfob, and can only open the driver door in the event of a power failure.
As for putting it in neutral, it doesn't always work, again its all electronic, it sees you move the joystick to neutral and decides if it wants to go into neutral or not. I never experimented with the power button before so I don't know if there is any times that it will or will not work.
Toyota - Universal excuse to get out of a speeding ticket! When you see those lights flashing in the rear view mirror just drop the hammer for a while then act all shaken up when you pull over.
This guy is a moron. When the ECM code locks up and you lose control, selecting neutral will do nothing. Perhaps even the stop procedure may not work. Imagine the blue screen of death on your computer except it is your car and you are accelerating. Anyone can control a car that is operating correctly. The only valuable info is his direction to get out of the passing lane!
From what I have read on Jalopnik, the runaway Prius man was bankrupt, had $700k in debt, runs a swingers website, and stole from previous business partners. It wouldn't surprise me if he is trying to get a payday out of this.
Awsome video the mask is silly but. When they had the cop with the 911 call i was like wtf push in the clutch put it in neutral or shut it off . No call 911 and say i am a police officer and my car is speeding and i can't stop it.
90% of the people in this country can't drive a manual. It took me forever and a day to find my manual VW!
Easy way to stop an gassed up Prius...
Yank the E-brake, it will lock up the rear, the tires will pop, then the rims will geind down then the back end will hit the ground, then the tank will grind down and explode...
Actually, from first hand experience and screwing around on the highway, the E-brake on the Prius is next to useless. Opening the doors will slow you down faster. If the thing didn't beep at you for leaving it on, you probably wouldn't ever know.
Screw the high mileage man, those things are too damned complicated, just for the sake of BEING complicated, which is frikkin' stupid. When technology ceases to solve a problem and only exists for it's own sake, it's time to take a step back.
You couldn't pay me to take a Prius....and that was before it was disclosed that they were crap. Like I've been saying for years, all the worthless extra electronics and gadgets are bad news. Just more stuff to go wrong.......That's what makes my 73 Bug so attractive, simple and as reliable as a stone.
The prius is an ok car. A bit too expensive, the payback on gas saved is probably longer than you will own the car, but it does get great mileage, and rides ok. ( I didn't buy one, I got a diesel VW to get uber mileage, and I'm happy so far )
There MAY have been an issue with floor mats getting jammed under the pedal. There IS a small problem with the actual pedal assy, in that it wears out faster than rational people will accept, but the actual # of people who actually have "jammed throttle" problems can probably be counted on fingers and toes. I'm pretty sure that most of these reports are the same as the Audi 5000 disasters where people jammed down hard on the gas, thinking they were braking, and killed people.
Now, you want to bitch about fly by wire systems, you have a valid point. My car has no direct mechanical connection between the shifter & the tranny, it's electronic. Same with Prius "throttles". I'm still waiting to see what the real problem is.
I've had "unintended acceleration" on 2 vehicles in the past. Once in a '72 polara when the cruise freaked & jammed, but it was going bad before that. Once on a Suzuki GT380 when the center carb had the pin that keeps the slide straight backed out, and it spun around backwards. I stopped bith vehicles with the brakes. The Suzuki ran with the kill switch pushed, the key removed, and the gas tank removed and tossed in a yard 20 feet away. I ended up on the center stand, engaged 2nd gear, eased the clutch out while standing on the rear brake, to kill the engine. Fixed it & rode home.
