CBS Evening News has a nightly segment called "The American Spirit." They ask people to nominate people they know who they think should be featured. Quoting from http://www.cbsnews.com/2718-18563_162-298.html?tag =hdr;cnav: "The American Spirit embodies the heart and soul of America. We're looking for people who are inspiring, helping, working towards, or having a positive impact on the lives of other people. If you want to submit an idea for The American Spirit send an email to: theamericanspirit@cbsnews.com" I think we should nominate Erik. A copy of the e-mail I sent is at http://socalbuellriders.blogspot.com/2009/10/my-le tter-to-cbs-evening-news.html What do you guys think? Will you send in an e-mail? |

I wrote and extended an offer to do anything and everything I can to facilitate this. I sent a copy of the book 25 YEARS OF BUELL and a link to the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1pFLg3t5q4 I think ALL HARLEY-DAVIDSON BOARD MEMBERS should be required to watch that video. |

Here's what I sent. Glad Court sent them a book as I referenced it in my email: ================ I recently learned of a series you are planning on “The American Spirit”. I began to think about what embodies the Spirit of America. Those qualities in a person that make them uniquely American. What I settled on was the following: Strong in the face of adversity Passionate Fair Honest Trustworthy Hard working Innovative Tenacious Visionary And most of all…they must have a DREAM. I can think of one person who embodies these qualities, Erik Buell. Mr. Buell started chasing his dream in a dairy barn in Wisconsin. He shared his passion, his work ethic, his values, and his dream with a few others who stuck by him for over a quarter of a century. He grew his dream into a company that exported its products around the globe and employed nearly 200 hard working Americans who shared his vision. This vision was to build an American sport motorcycle that was “Different in Every Sense”. To do something the rest of the world dared not do. Question the norm and create something different. Erik’s innovation doesn’t stop at motorcycles. He’s also designed electric guitars, bicycles, and holds several patents not yet implemented. A modern day Thomas Edison. Much of what I can say about Erik and his American Spirit has been covered extensively in a book written by Court Canfield, “25 Years of Buell” (ISBN-13: 978-1884313745). When researching Erik for your series, please consider this book as a resource. You will not meet a person more filled with passion for what he does, and loyalty to those who share his dream. His spirit has garnered the admiration of thousands around the globe who follow him like a modern day Pied Piper. Recently, due to economic reasons, Buell Motor Company was closed. This will not be the end of Erik’s dream, but instead, a new beginning. I’m sure you will get several nominations, but this one is truly worth consideration. A true American with an indomitable American spirit. Thank you, Chad Hargis |

to go in a slightly different direction, but to get to a much bigger audience, I emailed the following to the O'Reilly show. To Mr. O'Reilly and your producers, You are probably not aware of the closing of Buell Motorcycle Company in East Troy, Wisconsin. This was a "business decision" of Harley-Davidson as a result of the current economic woes and Harley's poor financial results as of late. jobs are continually being lost and no one seems to care. Erik Buell and his employees were a true American success story and were on the cusp of becoming something enormous. They had grown from absolutely barebones beginnings into a company that was taking on the giants of the motorcycle industry from Japan and Europe and showing them that a small American company could hold their own against anyone. Buell won the AMA Daytona Sportbike class this year and had several wins in various other classes as well. Here is a link to a brief history of Buell...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1pFLg3t5q4 I would love to see you do a segment on Buell and possibly have Erik Buell as a guest and some his employees as well. Thank you for your time and consideration. Brad Farmer |

Hello, I hope you are well! I'm sending this email to nominate a Gentlemen by the name of Erik Buell. Erik is what I fell is the perfect candidate for your American Spirit segment. Erik has spent the majority of his adult life chasing and fulfilling his dreams by creating an all American company.... Buell Motorcycles. What Erik dreamed, built and eventually marketed slowly became the greatest motorcycles on earth! Thanks to Erik, there is a very strong bond in the Buell owners community, one that NO other motorcycle group or company has!! With his dreams, his goals, his blood sweat and tears, I can safely say, he is 100% Full of American Spirit! Owner/ XB Lights -Robert Hall www.xblights.com |

I'm a big fan of true stories. Movies like Rudy, Hoosiers, Invincible, World's Fastest Indian, etc....they all demonstrate an indomitable spirit. The Buell story is one that would captivate an audience. Perhaps we can get Barker to take on the challenge. He's a whiz at all that video stuff. Would be cool to send a promo video to several of the media outlets encouraging them to cover the story. |
