http://www.docstoc.com/docs/10582301/President-Oba ma%E2%80%99s-Address-to-Students-Across-America-Se ptember-8-2009 PreK-6 Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama¡¦s Address to Students Across America Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education September 8, 2009 Before the Speech: „h Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions: Who is the President of the United States? What do you think it takes to be President? To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking? Why do you think he wants to speak to you? What do you think he will say to you? „h Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say. „h Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important? During the Speech: „h As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following: What is the President trying to tell me? What is the President asking me to do? What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about? „h Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people? „h Students can record any questions they have while he is speaking and then discuss them after the speech. Younger children may need to dictate their questions. After the Speech: „h Teachers could ask students to share the ideas they recorded, exchange sticky notes or stick notes on a butcher paper poster in the classroom to discuss main ideas from the speech, i.e. citizenship, personal responsibility, civic duty. „h Students could discuss their responses to the following questions: What do you think the President wants us to do? Does the speech make you want to do anything? Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us? What would you like to tell the President? „h Teachers could encourage students to participate in the Department of Education¡¦s ¡§I Am What I Learn¡¨ video contest. On September 8 th the Department will invite K-12 students to submit a video no longer than 2 min, explaining why education is important and how their education will help them achieve their dreams. Teachers are welcome to incorporate the same or a similar video project into an assignment. More details will be released via www.ed.gov . Extension of the Speech: Teachers can extend learning by having students „h Create posters of their goals. Posters could be formatted in quadrants or puzzle pieces or trails marked with the labels: personal, academic, community, country. Each area could be labeled with three steps for achieving goals in those areas. It might make sense to focus on personal and academic so community and country goals come more readily. „h Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals. „h Write goals on colored index cards or precut designs to post around the classroom. „h Interview and share about their goals with one another to create a supportive community. „h Participate in School wide incentive programs or contests for students who achieve their goals. „h Write about their goals in a variety of genres, i.e. poems, songs, personal essays. „h Create artistic projects based on the themes of their goals. „h Graph student progress toward goals. I'm sure there is another plan to address the kids 7 - 12 grade. As a responsible parent, it is my job and my duty to teach my children morals and values to be a responsible citizen in this great nation. I, for one, will not allow the government to further push a political agenda, or attempt to indoctrinate my children without first going through me. My child will not be participating in this mass indoctrination on the 8th of September, if you know of others that feel as I do, forward this message on. If you don't agree with my understanding of this attack on my household, feel free to contact me, and we'll talk about facts and what is brewing on the horizon. |

this is coming from the federal level, so probably not much the teacher can do. kinda forced participation it looks like. go to ed.gov for the story from the fed as well as what they want the teachers to talk about before and after the "speech" got a link for 7th - 12th grade as well. |

Welcome, to the machine! (Que spacey Pink Floyd) Seriously though, I still don't believe we have seen anything yet. Soon they will want all of us to assimilate to that same drum beat. Can't you hear them marching outside? |

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'll be e-mailing their teachers just to make sure our school is participating and what exactly they will be doing. I have no problem pulling my two school aged children since they both are in accelerated classes it's just a shame I HAVE to. I will also talk to our parent/teacher contact to express my dismay if in fact this happens. |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. Are you serious? Re-read that section there, copied verbatim. Oldog's insinuation seems pretty damned good, to me. That list starts out fairly innocuous and then ends on that note. Goals to 'help the president'? Collected so the students can be 'held accountable'? Rewarding those who accomplish their goals? Some would consider lack of reward a punishment in and of itself - so children will be punished for not helping the President? |
This type of indoctrination has been going on at the college level for decades. It doesn't work on everyone, so they're starting earlier. It's a logical progression. |
I taught my nephew to ride a mini scooter, shoot a gun, hunting basics (you never really master them, you always improve on them), and some of the boyscout fundamentals. Kids should be doing the job of being a kid, having fun and exploring. There is enough time to find out the world is a big smoke screen that hides the agenda of the all consuming machine. |
We are calling the school tomorrow to have our daughter excused from this. I can think of no reason that ANY president would need to address a 5 year old directly. |
so, they are having the students watch a speech and critically think about what was said? Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals. why do they have to HELP the president? is that so he can blame the kids after the blaming of Bush loses its steam? If you look on the www.ed.gov website, the class agenda is a lot more education focused for the 7th -12th grades, leaving the help the president out of it. Why is it different? Maybe because older children have already investigated politics if they are interested and have formed an opinion already? young children are easier to convince since they typically haven't formed a personal opinion. By spending so much time on a subject in one day, will influence there core beliefs or opinions in the long term. This is just one more battle that the revolutionary left is taking on that will eventually win their war on the republic. Everything that the past few administrations has done has had a purpose building to a long term goal. I can read the overall goal of this one quite easily. They may appear to lose this battle from a big picture standpoint, but they are building yet another base for the socialist movement that will be of voting age in the next 10 years. The government, no matter which side of the aisle they are on, has no right attempting to influence the teachings or morals of my children. That is solely the responsibility of my wife and I. |
This summer, I got my 6 year old a single shot, bolt action .22 rifle he only shoots with and has access too, when I am present. We went out, he loves shooting and is pretty decent. Gabe is 6 and just started first grade 3 weeks ago... Now he's afraid of guns. I'm not sure I want him going to school next Tuesday... |
In my best big O voice-"look kids we just saddled you with 1.2 trillion of debt, you all are going to have to own up, take some responsibility for (some of) you're parents/grandparents actions and really start helping us out here." Deadduck, nevrenuf-I'm in complete agreement. I think my kids and I might be fishing that day... |
Think about the demographic were this will have the most effect. The hope is to try and reduce drop out rates and increase the education level in certain area of the country. It sounds like you are all ready education your children beyond what the program will do. |
