We believe in riding with no more than one other rider.

Hans - As I said in my post above I just got back from "Bike Week" where I was among thousands of the kind of folks depicted in that add. I believe that add would appeal to them very strongly. What you and I might think is a ridiculous parody, they find comforting. To each his own .....

...a thousand of those identical "non-conformists" in the room

...mentality of dressing the same to be different

Next time ya'll are out riding with your friends, take a peek around the group and marvel at your lack of diversity.

If you got 1000 Buell riders in the same room, I bet you would find that THEY ARE ALL DRESSED ALIKE TOO! Full face Arai's and Joe Rocket Jackets as far as the eye can see. Lack of a do-rag makes a man a 'rea'l non-conformist.

Does that make us sheep or delusional non-conformist wanna-be's? I think I've heard this "rebels all dressed alike" comment about 100 times too many. I guess Harley bashing has become fashionable.

Rant off.

Yep, any group is like that.
Be it HD riders
BMW riders in their Aerostich
Sportbike riders in Icon,Joe Rocket,Alpinestar
Hunters in Mossy Oak or Realtree camo
Rappers in FUBU(whatever that means?)
GB Packer fans in all their Bret Farve shirts.

it is very tempting to form a group to which we can belong that excludes the "others."

the result is often (to me) boring and mind numbing (gets to be like talking to yourself after a while)

much more illuminating spending time with folks that are different than you are -- ya learn more, find out stuff about yourself, and it keeps your mind from hardening before your arteries

the fear of the "other" is manifested not only in our choice of costumes and activities -- it's reflected in many religions, political parties, fraternal organizations, and neighborhood kaffee klatches

sad, really, but it does seem to be part of the human conidtion --

I don't know that I agree with that comment ... although I know a lot of Buell riders do don the sportbike attire .. but lack of diversity .. I think Buell riders are among the most diverse group of bikers I have ever seen. I look at our own local Brag chapter(Brew City Brag)...

Our director has a ponytail down to his arse, we have a couple kids that fit the sportbike rider profile, we've got a couple female riders ( one of whom has more bikes /including an HD/ than I have cars - and that is saying something), we've got a couple that race their Buell's, a few (forgive me guys) past middle age, then you also have me, the tattood, pierced, shaved head guy ... it doesn't get much more diverse than that. Many a Buell owner also have a big chrome couch sitting side by side their Buell in their garage(self included). I think too much stereotyping is done to all groups of bikers, hey - hardcore to banker, sportbike to cruiser -- we are all on 2 wheels, think back to when you first started riding, It takes a bit more than just wanting to be part of a certain lifestyle to get you through that first week or so after climbing on a bike.

And if I may comment on one other thing I hear all the time, in this thread and elsewhere on badweb as well. We seem to say that all HD's are basically the same with the exception of chrome-
non-conformist, motorcycles...well if you really step back and take a look, the same could be said of Buell's .. how close are we looking at what HD riders change and customize, probably a lot of the same things we change, -- handlebars, pegs, exhausts, paint, etc, etc, etc, .. I think too much stereotyping and down-talking is done of other biker groups.. too each their own, most HD riders are just as passionate about their machines as we are our Buell's .. you have real bikers, and fair weather bikers in every group.

Not really sure if I made any point here, just sharing some of my own thoughts on the topic .. I thought the commercial was good.

Brian - the tattood, pierced, stay-at-home biker dad ..

It's not just bikers, you can see it everywhere. I see groups of high schoolers dressed alike, you can see it in the shopping malls, at church, bicyclists, at the shooting range. Does the expression "birds of a feather" come to mind? Seems like human nature, not just bird nature.

Our BRAG group is pretty diversified also.
We have everything from BMWs to GSXRs riding with us.
20-50 years old
Very diversified occupations
Long hairs like me and Luke
Clean cut looking members

But, even on our different brands of motorcycles(we let all brands come play) when geared up, full face helmets on, we still, to the general population all look pretty much the same.

I've spent my whole life not fitting in. Not by choice, just by chance. Am I happy because of it? Maybe. Am I unhappy because of it? Maybe. I guess it just depends on the day. Take one look at my stable of bikes. You will realize, that, to fit in all of the applicable groups for such a diverse stable, I would need to be an effin chameleon. Although every once in a while when all of the stars are in allignment...I fit in.

No, he said you should boycott HD & Co. because you declared them blasphemous pagans as that seems to be the message you got from the ad.

I never called them pagans, maybe blasphemers, but c'mon thats a little out there. its seems as if they are trying to attract the "hardcore" people, or the "edge" people. i just thought since they were so big, that something like this would've been thought through...i know many brothers that have Buells and Harleys.

Hence the diversity of the original ad, which is what this thread was about. Some of us believe in the man upstairs. "Some" of us don't. I'm just happy to be included! I dunno about sticking it to the man though. That's a pretty evasive target if you ask me. I know someone with a great tattoo, "Comfort the disturbed. Disturb the comfortable." I'm all about that.

I take that ad with a grain of salt, it is not aimed at me and is possibly, IMHO, a little silly and short on good reasons to buy that product.

It must be really tough to "be your own man", "walk to a different drummer", "do your own thing", etc., etc. Because it seems like every time I run into a person blabbering on about that kind of thing they are hanging with others who are dressed alike, adorned like, and doing the same things.

There is some grain of lunacy in being so unique that you have to try to appeal to, fend off, or poke fun at, the people that are not being unique in the same or at least a similar way. Must be a tribal behavior or something like that.

I'd like to think I'm a guy with a motorcycle, that I enjoy it, and have no particular agenda. As soon as I can figure out a way to spot a group of bikers who are all like that, I may decide to avoid them.

In the meantime, I'll continue to either wave at or wave back to everything on two wheels as long as it is safe to do so.

Jack

It has been my experience that the Buell community is quite diverse and not at all conforming to any stereotype. It's why so many Harley dealers are unsuccessful with the brand. I was thinking of this as I hung out with all the different BadWeb guys at Liberty yesterday. There were go fasters, stunters, tourists and newbies. Jeans & sneaks to full leathers. Stockers to tricked out bikes with very cool paint. Lots of diverse, strongly held opinions on all things Buell - sorta like this board....

The only common thread that I find is a love for things mechanical and a fierce individuality.

The "The "sticking it to the man" comment was neither necessary or appropriate.

"With Sprint's clear and flexible plan, I can talk to whomever I want, when and wherever I want. It's my own little way of STICKING it to the man."

'But, you ARE the man'

"Yes, I know"

'So you're stickin' it to yourself'

"Maybe"

Buellfirebolt31 - That is your opinion/belief, and you are entitled to it...

... the same way Kdan is entitled to his

People have the right to hold whatever opinion about whatever topic they choose.

and IMO - we've gone a little off-track on this thread ... we've gone from thoughts on an HD ad, to a belief battle that no one will win
