There are a lot of home remedies for removing skunk odor from the dog, and there are also a lot of commercial products in any pet store. As for the house I'd stock up on some Febreeze of similar stuff. | ||

Massengill's douche will take the stink off the dog. No, really. I mean if it'll...well...never mind. Just trust me on this one! You might have to burn the house, though... rt | ||

JT, man I sure hope your doggie is smarter than my lil mut. She jest don't get it. She's managed to get shunked 3 times in two years S.A.M.(stupid azz mut) Dog and every thing it touched gotz to get double baths, lots of air freshiner. After two weeks or so you will hardley even notice the smell. | ||

JerseyThunder I own a carpet cleaning and Commercial cleaning service. What has your dog been in contact with in your house that may have got the skunk spray on it?? As far as your dog I have an old English Mastiff so I can imagine.LOL SERIOUSLY bring him to a dog groomer they can fix him up in a jiffy for ya or if its an emergency call the VET. I'll help ya in any way I can.LOL Done this type job before. | ||

most douches are primarily vinegar and water, so it would be ridiculously expensive to use 'em. use vinegar and water. as strong on the vinegar side as you can go. tomato juice is good, too. | ||

Tramp is right. I believe the acidity of said tomatoe (the way Dan Quayle would've spelt it) and/or vinegar will break down the enzymes or sulfuric components of the offending polecat shower. Buy yourself a jug of cheap store brand apple cider vinegar, dilute it with water so it won't offend the dog too much and go to town. | ||

You guys I think jersey has got the gog at the groomer and they will take care of him wonderfully without Tomato juice or Vinager.I couldn't even imagine washing a dog that weighs in a 200 lbs in some cases with tomato juice. Jersey you may need to have a professional clean your carpet and upholstery if your dog came in contact with it. | ||

I am some glad there are no Skunks here in Newfoundland!!!!! As for the dogs........they are absoulutely wonderful creatures.... Jersey...have you ever seen a black and white Newfoundland??? those ones are unique. | ||

I guess you could have their scent glands removed. The Black & White Newfs and Black Newfs are 200lb animals with a very good personality. They are great with kids too. I remember seeing one and the owner told me that the breeder was going to have it destroyed when it was born but they convinced them to keep it. Of course it had to be fixed as soon as it was old enough to keep the gene pool pure. Amazing what breeders will do. | ||

I used to have a 120Lb Chessie who got sprayed every once in awhile. Used white vinegar dilluted in water to wash him off with. Just be very carefull to not get any in their eyes, supposed to do bad stuff to the eyes. Makes the dog smell like a salad for a few days, and takes several washings, first washing is like smelling skunk salad, second is like weak skunk salad, third is like vinegar salad with a hint of skunk, after about a week you're now used to the smell and only your co-workers can tell (but it doesn't matter because by now they've all moved three cubes away in the office)(that's not necessarily a bad thing). I wouldn't be surprised if the groomers just shaved the Newfie since most of the smell would be in the hair and little of it making it to the skin. For the house rent a steam/spray cleaner where ever the dog has been like Dana mentioned above. | ||

i've had pet skunks. never descented 'em, just like the cool little mink I had. skunks never sprayed, even when the cats hassled them. the mink, on the other story, emptied out my vet's office when a tech was trying to pull some ticks out of his ear. the outta this world barking csream he emitted, and the heinous, yellow cloud of scent (imagine rotten fish, sardines, and skunk all combined) which hung in the air put me in bad graces with my vet. I still maintain it was the tech's fault. | ||

A chemical engineer came up with this solution: 1 qt. 3% hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda 1 teaspoon liguid soap This is a reactive solution that has to be mixed right before use. It generates large amounts of oxygen that oxidizes the stink. I've never had to use it, but did come very close a couple of years ago when walking the dog in a field and a skunk popped up right in front of me. We also got a baby one out of the next-door neighbor's window well last summer. He was trying to spray but didn't have much of a smeller yet. | ||

If you need to have things cleaned it better to have them done by a professional. The cleaners and home remedies stated above can..... maybe help but in most cases the problem can get worse or you wind up ruining your carpet,furniture.Some of the products you can buy from vets or specialty places may be a great product but if not used corrrectly it could cost you dearly.I've seen this way to many times.they say things like "I tried this stuff and it worked for awhile but now the smell is back." Or I sprayed this on and didn't realize that I was suppose to do a color fast test to see if the product would destroy or discolor the fabric in upholstery or yarns in the carpet." To many times have I seen damage done because the consumer doesn't understand what they are using or the effects and in alot of cases it cannot be reversable. Jersey if you still have a problem call a service. To many products have a masking agents (the fresh smell you get when its applied)but in a week or even days its back. | ||
