There'd been a myriad of problems that may have started with a worn engine temp sensor, which has since been replaced. Along with the fuel pump. (Interesting operation for that.)
After the fuel pump replacement, the bike started fine, and held the idle. I was able to take it for about a 70 mile round trip, and it did ok - felt like it was a little sluggish on pick up but the bike ran.
Since then, the bike hasn't been able to keep running. Once hot, it won't hold the idle.
I have ECMspy on an old Palm, and haven't used it to change any programming, (bike ran fine before this series of breaks) but the following numbers are from the DataView section:
TP degree is at 5.1 degrees, but while running, it'll dip to 4.8 and go back to 5.1 (referring to the program running, not the bike)
Throttle position is at 5.8%
Any diagnostic questions I should be asking?
Could an ECM go bad? Bike has just over 30k miles - it'san '04 XB12.

I doubt it's your TPS. Mine fluctuates slightly at idle too, but it's fine. A major swing would be an issue, but I think you're just looking at negligible noise.
I've only seen an ECM go bad ONCE in my life and that was a Ford EEC-IV that had been improperly wired up and fried because of it. After having dealt with some serious ground problems on my 2008 XB12, I'd say remove all of your grounds, file both side of each ring lug, file down the frame mounting points, and even consider adding a groundstrap between the chassis and the engine. Then coat all the ground points with some anti-corrosive coating.

Also, check the codes. You can do this by jumping the 2 righthand side pins in the ECM diagnostic connector (put the connector lock at 12 o'clock looking inside it). Turn the key on with engine enabled and you'll see the CEL flash codes at you.

Mine did just that, and it turned out to be the TPS, changed it for a new one and it's running perfect ever since
