Bummer news! A while back I got a copy of the Sikkens paint codes and formulas that were used on older Buells like the S2's S1's etc. Even had the formula for the infamous Parkway Blue. However, when I went to get some Carribean Blue mixed up for a repaint of my S2's front fender, a problem popped up. Seems that back in 1999 or so, Sikkins changed all their paint codes. They have NO cross reference for new paint to the older paint. None of the base coats or color coats have a cross reference. I was told the best option was to use one of their silver base coats, then shoot the closest match of one of their candy blues with enough coats to match the right hue/density. If you wanted to mix up a batch of Parkway Blue, you are out of luck. That paint has about 6 different colors in the mix formula. I'm bummed.... Looks like I have to shoot the entire bike instead of just the front fender. Brad | |||

Well, Brad, sounds like it's time for some flames or scallops! I couldn't find a match to the Sikkens code at a couple of different DuPont dealers that I trade with. I'm no painter but I know a few good ones. Here's a thing. I heard there's a device that you sit over the panel or whatever that you are trying to replicate the paint of, and this device takes a photograph of the EXACT colour then works out via computer the code for a perfect match. Rocket | |||

Tom, They guy bailed on the deal. Jeff and I head to Wausau WI tomorrow to pick up a 2002 Cyclone instead! Rocket, I was wondering about that myself. I know they have them for house paint but didn't know if they had it for auto finishes. I think it would be much tougher for auto paint due to the various undercoats available. something to check into though... Brad | |||

If you have a good paint shop around they can scan a panel that you have and match the color of that panel,the computer will tell them what to use.If you have a candy paint this will not work!However if you lightly sand a spot on the fender you want to repaint you can see what color base they used under the candy paint.Once you figure out what color base they used you can easily match the paint by just putting on a couple coats of the candy then check the color next to one of your good panels.Keep adding coats to the fender until it is dark enough to match.The hardest part is if they used silver as a base under the clear,this can be harder to match because the metallic in most silvers are different.Dupont has a silver (general motors) color I think and it has about the right metallic in it to match just about anything(at least close enough for a fender since its not actually up against another panel)Anyway I use these methods and they work for me. What if Sikkens was supplied samples of their own paint? I have a Black Sapphire S2 - and a brand new, never opened SET of touch up paint. It's 3 bottles. I guess a base, a color, and a clear coat. I'd sacrifice my touch up paint in a heartbeat - 'cause I really wanna paint my bag lids. -Saro | |||

Saro, That may be a possibility. I'd suggest contacting yrou local Sikkens rep. I had to call their national rep line from their web site to get the number for our local rep. Let us know what you find out. Brad | |||
