...Looks like I am going to make a run to mountains next weekend...

Carlos, be advised we've got 14" of fresh snow here on the Parkway, drifts to 30", wind gusts to 50 mph, and a current temp of +16 (considerably less with the wind chill).

i.e., dress warm! : D

Next weekend is supposed to be nice, but right now the roads are nasty. All the good roads are either gonna have ice or salt.

Don't rush up there Carlos as Ferris has uttered some ground truth. I spent 6 glorious hours getting home from RTP last night -- I-40 was single-track from WinSal to Statesville and I-77 continued the trend. It was all made better once I arrived at the house to find we'd been without power for hours, and hours, and freaking hours.

I did get to play decent human being for about 2 hours of that time. There was a young Mexican family over the side of 40 and the guy, probably not knowing any better, had his wife and children standing in a very vulnerable spot. I stopped and in about 3 minutes I knew that verbal communications was a dead-end. Tucked his wife and kids in my truck, hooked up a snatch strap (I never carry that thing in my Denali and I'm still not sure how it got in there) to his car and eventually got it up. Told them, sign language don't you know, to follow me to Statesville -- we made it about 100 yards and off the fricking road he goes. Eventually we got them to Statesville where his brother, could've been an uncle/father/cousin, but the guy went way past my Spanish101 skillz, was meeting them. They met someone and we parted ways.

Screwed up my recently repaired elbow during the second ordeal -- I hope it's just a strain/pull kind of deal. Another knife job's not a pleasant thought.

Brankin,
Let me know your address and I'll send you my clutch tool to use. It's the American Sport Bike tool. Works pretty good.

I went up to the blue ridge the weekend after the last snow. It was a big mistake. Still salt on the roads and ice in shady places.

Came around one blind curve and found an ice flow coming of a rock wall and flowing onto the road. Manged to get it in a straight line before I hit it, but it sure woke me up.

Limped home with my tail between my legs after that.

Big Dad, you're a good hombre, amigo. Hope it's just a strain kinda thing, and that you rebound quickly. Good on ya for being a good human. : )

Carlos, today's high was 19. It's currently 18 (feels like 5), with a predicted low tonight of 10. It's not supposed to get above freezing tomorrow, with a predicted low tomorrow night of 17.

The last snowfall we had up here on the Parkway was minor. The snow we have on the ground now is NOT, and I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.

i.e..........dress warm. : D

It is suppose to warm up nicely this week, but I will check out the weather as we get closer to this weekend.

BD - I did that once. Kristi, my brother and I were living in Cincinnati and decided to drive to NC for the weekend. In the mountains we got caught in one nasty blizzard. They closed I-77 but we, or should I say, I drove on. We were in white out conditions running over night on the parking lamps when I came across a car in the median. It was a woman traveling with her 15 year old son. I've never seen a person in total panic before but this woman had completely lost it. I was in a ski jacket, jeans, a ball cap and loafers. I was digging in the snow for twenty minutes when my brother came and picked up the front of the car. Did I ever tell you I was the runt of the litter. The 15 yo kid, my brother and I walked the car out. The woman sped off and I sat in the car for twenty minutes screaming. Had to be the closest I have been to frost bite in my life. Hurt like hell but there was no way I was going to leave that woman and boy stuck in the snow.

A bit different than Cali I expect. : )

Or perhaps not, it was quite cold when I was in San Diego, I was surprised.

Carlos,
If you end up coming to WNC this weekend, and are anywhere near or thru Hendersonville or therebouts, let me know.

Not sure what my weekend plans are yet, but I just installed heated grips, GPS power and new Pilot Road 2's, so I might be looking for an excuse to test them all out.

I still have 4" of snow at the house, but things can change quickly...

Carlos,

IF you make it up this way over the weekend I'm hoping to head towards Boone/Blowing Rock area with the wife. I have to work until 12:00 but I work in Hickory less than a mile off exit 125 on I-40. I'm keeping an eye on the weather and the conditions up there as well as here. I have a ton of clients from that area so I constantly get updates. around here all the snow is gone except in shady spots. the roads are excellent except for the few scattered spots this morning and those will probably be gone this evening. Hope things look up quick.

Thanks guys, I am heading west, with my only destination at the end of the day the cabin in Fancy Gap. I am hoping the warm weather gets there soon enough to melt away all the snow. We had all of a 1/2" of snow here and even though it was still cold, the snow was gone in all but the shaded areas. I plan to watch the race Friday night then head out early Saturday AM. I may just slab it west. I can make it across NC in about five hours. So it should be no problem to make it to Hickory by lunch. From there we can head where ever depending on the weather and melting snow.

Carlos,

We'll pass somewhere between Hickory & Durham dependent upon your departure time. If you decide to stop and eat somewhere along the way call my cell. I'll be on the road from 3AM until 6:ish.

1

This is late Sunday afternoon, next to the Parkway. I'd estimate the wind is blowing a steady 50 mph, maybe more; outside of my two stents in Alaska on fishing boats in a past life, this is the nastiest wind I've ever experienced. Several times it almost knocked me down. I was dressed in every bit of cold-weather gear I own, including a neoprene face mask, but it was deadly cold with the wind chill and I didn't hang around up here long. By dusk Sunday night we had about four inches of snow, and the wind howled all night.

1

This is Monday morning, just up the street from us, as one of my neighbors plows the neighborhood. It snowed all night, dropping an additional eight to ten inches. Note the drifted snow behind the front tire on the pickup. It doesn't look like it in this pic, but the wind is still strong.

1

This is back up by the Parkway again, Monday morning. Now you can see the wind. Note the near-total lack of snow behind the mailboxes - the wind has taken it all and dumped it in my yard...

1

One of our neighboring streets. Our friends Don and Ruth (Don recently bought D's Virago) live up this street. They're comfortably ensconced in Jax, Florida for the winter. Yes, I hate them.

1

This is the tree that snapped in half Sunday night from the wind and crashed into the north side of our house. To make it all extra fun, I was up in the attic when it hit. It's a sound that definitely commands your attention. Fortunately no significant structural damage. The tree is still there - I can't do anything about it until it's safe to climb up on the roof.

1

This is on the south deck. I scraped the snow down to deck level for some visual perspective. It's over the tops of my boots.

1

Later Monday morning the doorbell rings, and it's our neighbor Jimmy, who'd gotten his Toyota Rav/4 (yes, it's four-wheel drive) stuck in snowdrift next to the Parkway trying to get to work. We dug and dug for a half-hour or so, to no avail. Fortunately, a good Samaritan in a four-door F-350 4X4 with a tow chain helped us pull Jimmy to safety. I asked him if he was still going to try to get to work. "Nope, I'm going back home and pouring myself a stiff drink...or two!" : )

1

This is early yesterday afternoon, and shows what four straight hours of shoveling will get you: your driveway and sidewalk. I had to chain-up to get my truck out of the downstairs garage, and I reckon it can stay parked outside in D's driveway for the time being. Altho the temps are forecasted to rise dramatically in the next few days, it remains to be seen how long it takes before I can get the Road King out...

Hurry home Denise, and please bring some California back with you!!! : D
