I hear you Bill, we were wondering where you were heading off for so fast.

What are the odds they'll add a couple of feet to 60 south of Suches while they're up there doing some repaving(hopefully) in the near future?

My net time is VERY limited with the laptop down and typing on the ps3 SUX!

Anyway, everyone is welcome, if you want to camp for the hell of it I got plenty of room for loads of tents! Sam and I may go up to dales early sunday for breakfast tho.

Glitch, you tell me the time, and it will go till whenever.

The out of towners are welcome to come and stay as well.

Dog and kid friendly dogs may come.

Toys of all kinds but real guns(f'n neighbors!) are welcome.

Hey guys, hope everyone had a great father's day.
You guys really know how to take lemons and make lemon-aide with them!

Unfortunately I will not be able to make it out for Dave's party. Not because of the change in location, but because of the very scary happenings of this weekend. This is going to get lengthy, and I apologize in advance for the novel I am about to write here.

Thursday at around 5pm, I got a call from Shelby's daycare that she had fallen and hit her head and was unresponsive, and that the parmedics were on their way. I work about 1/4 mile from there, and got there in a matter of seconds.

The paramedics were there, attending to Shelby. She was lying on the floor looking around, but not really reacting to anything... just looking around.
I sat next to her, and she looked at me, but did not respond at all to me like she would normally do. No smile, no nothing.. just looked at me like I was one of the other paramedics.

Melissa got there as they were loading her into the ambulance, and within a few minutes she was coming around.

It seems that she had a mild seizure.

We got to the er (I drove the van while Melissa was in the Ambulance), and by that time Shelby was just fine.
They ordered a CAT scan, due to the report that she had fallen and hit her head. The CAT scan came back showing no injuries at all, but that she has some calcifications in her brain. Nothing really serious, but something that needed to be looked into.
So we got a referral to a Pediatric Nurologist for the next day.

We met with the Nurologist friday morning, and Shelby got an EEG test (which she did NOT like one bit.) All came out perfectly normal. And the Nurologist was wonderful.

The Nurologist stated that she thought that Shelby was a perfectly normal, and well developed little 16 month old girl. And that we would keep an eye out for any other seizure like behaviors before moving towards any seizure controlling meds.

We got home and all was well, Shelby was perfectly normal, and we went about our day as normal, with some worry about what had occured, and what may happen in the future.

We got Shelby in bed around 8pm.. Then we went to be around 9 or so. About 10pm or so I heard Shelby make a couple of grunting sounds over the monitor, and her breathing sounded strange. I decided that I should probably check on her.

When I got in the room, she was breathing kind of fast, and was burning up. I took her temp. and that was about 102.6. So I picked her up, and noticed she felt a little stiff to me, and she did not wake up.

I then brought her into our bedroom, and that was when Melissa and I tried to wake her up... to no avail. We tickled her feet, shouted her name, rubbed on her chest... and nothing. Needless to say we were both freaking out.
I called 911, and the first EMT showed up within a few minutes while the 911 operator instructed me over the phone on what to do for Shelby. Another few minutes and the Ambulance showed up. They got Shelby into the ambulance, and within a couple of minutes Shelby started to respond a bit.

Again, I followed the ambulance and Melissa rode with Shelby.
And, again, by the time they got to the ER, Shelby was doing fine.
This time, the ER doc decided to do more extensive testing... Blood work, and a spinal tap. He also called our Nurologist and consulted with her about it(She was awesome, she got up at 1am and imediately started working on causes and treatments).

Shelby had her spinal tap around 2:30am, and as I was holding her trying to console her.. she had another seizure just before 3am. This time I got to see the entire, horrible sight.
At that point, the doc wanted to definitely keep her in the hospital for observation and treatments.
We got a room in the Children's center and they began stuffing her full of antibiotics, and anti-viral treatments.
At that point, I wasn't sure that we were ever going to leave that hospital with Shelby again... and it was killing me.

So on the treatments and the tests go, thru Sunday, and Monday.
We started getting results back.. Spinal tap was negative for meningitis, or other infections. blood free of bacteria, etc. etc.

So, the Nurologist came in on Sunday to see Shelby, and did I say she is a wonderful doctor?? She is.

The Nurologist believes that the seizures are what they call Febrile seizures, brought on by a fast spike in fever. The fevers may have been brought on by a virus, but they are not sure what virus yet as everyting but a few test have come back, and all have been negative. There are two tests pending, and we should have the info on them in a couple of days.
Someone I spoke with on sunday said, "Man, what a terrible way to spend Father's day."
I disagree, because during friday night, into satruday morning, I thought I was going to loose my daughter.. But there I was on Sunday with my daughter laying on my chest sleeping... even if it was in a hospital room, I was happy that she was there.

We got home this afternoon, and all is well.. but Melissa and I are kind of nervous. We are here, and all of the doctors and nurses are at the hospital..
We know how to deal with Shelby's seizures now.. but it is still a scary proposition.

Febrile seizures are not life threating, and don't do any nurological damage when they occur, but they sure as hell look like they do. Kids that are suseptable to them usually grow out of it by the time they are 3 years old, others around 5. We just need to make sure that whenever Shelby gets a fever, that we treat it immediatly and watch her closely. If we can keep it from spiking, she should not have a seizure.

So, I am going to stay home next weekend, because I am just not comfortable being that far away from Shelby just yet.

So, hug your kids, and tell them you love them every day. And make sure they know it!

Also, have an awesome party! Happy birthday again to Dave and Bambi!

Russ - I know how scared you and Melissa must have been. I'm so glad to hear that Shelby is doing better. Our oldest, Carlee, also had a Febrile Seizure at the sitter's when she was 18 months old. It is very scary, but I'm happy to report that she never had another one and she's now 13.

I'm sure your pediatrician and neurologist told you that it's not how high the fever is, but how fast it climbs. Our pediatrician also gave us these instructions to deal with Carlee's fevers when she was little. We've followed them with our other two children.

1 - Never put her in a cool bath to bring down the fever, it can be counterproductive since she's already had a febrile seizure. You bring it down and then it spikes again and can bring on another seizure.

2 - Once ours hit 102, we do the Advil/Motrin on the 6 hour increments and then on the 3rd in between they get Tylenol. (6 am - Advil, 9 am - Tylenol, 12 noon - Advil, etc.) This keeps the fever from climbing so high again before meds are given on the 6th hour.

3 - When carrying a fever, let them sleep with you. You can keep your hand on them and feel the temps rising. Our kids always have hot tummies when they have a high fever.

I hope this is the last you'll see of the seizures. I know our sitter will never forget that day. She's kept 20+ kids in her home, but never had one scare her like Carlee did that day.

Keep us posted and we'll say an extra prayer for your family tonight.

Ratyson, Glad Shelby is doing better. Its just a terrible feeling when your child is sick and we as parents feel helpless when we can't take away the pain.

Your right about the hugs, nothing feels better than a good ol' hug. I'm doing it more and more, even when I'm tired after a long days work and the heat drains me.

Natalie's 12 and she's been a bit jealous lately because Nic gets a lot of attention. So I'm trying to give her more one on one time. Its paying off

Anyway, keep in touch and keep us up to date with any news.

Charlie, The Buffington family will be attending Glitch's birthday party at your house. We'd be happy to help with food and beer.

How about I'll bring some beer of Glitch's choice.

I'm sure their will be some grilling going on but how about something else and different too like Fried Ginger chicken or chicken kabobs?

Glitch, any thought on that? You pick!

BTW, Here a couple pics of my favorite trophy.

its hard to tell but the card had a car in it and the wife and Natalie modified it to make it look like a motorcycle of some sort.

Damn Russ! That was a tough read. Not because it was long either. While I was reading, I kept saying in my head, "Come on Russ, get to the good news!" I'm glad to hear things are working out. Being parents can be (often is) very scary indeed. It makes us stronger as well, prepares us for the long haul. If a parent can make it through the first five years of being new parents, they will be almost prepared for the next five, and them we're almost tough enough to handle the teen age years. Nothing in life ever will more dynamically change a person than parenting. I hate y'all had to go through the wringer like that, but at the very least it turned out well, and y'all have another feather in you cap to go along side the feather for fostering/adopting.
Wish you could make it, but know why you can't. At this point I'm sure it's hard for you just to go to work.

Not sure what time we should get together either. I'm good for any time.
Beer? I'm (as y'all well know) am a cheap date. I like Corona with lime.
I'm looking forward to riding the 50's, so I guess we ought to start before dark.

Russ, You and yours are in my prayers... I had the same thing with my son a few years back. Scared the crap outta me. After all the doctor/hospitol visits and tests the best they could come up with was that sometimes kids get seizures but grow out of it... Not very comforting coming from the "experts"! Jr. did grow out of it though after what little hair I had left turned gray!

Dan, I'll meet ya at the V after I get out of the Tat shop (9pm). I'll be riding the 30yr old KZ750, my most reliable bike.

Thanks for all of the well wishes and prayers!
And thanks for the info Ulywife. I had not thought about the issue with using a bath for bringing the fever down.. good to know.

We all got a decent nights sleep last night.. but it was tough getting to sleep. Every noise she made we would stop what we were doing, and listen and watch the video monitor (I bought one yesterday on the way home so we could visually check on her without going in the room and bothering her.)
I ended up falling asleep while watching the monitor next to the bed.
I am sure it will get easier as time goes by.

Here is a picture of Shelby saying "I wanna go home."

I wanna go home

Her teachers from daycare came to visit on Monday and brought me the father's day present that she made for me at school last week.
It is a small picture frame with her foot print and a poem. A poem that made me blubber like a little kid:

Walk a little slower Daddy,
Said a child so small,
I'm following in your footsteps,
And I don't want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast,
Sometimes they're hard to see,
So walk a little slower, Daddy,
For you are leading me.

Someday when I'm all grown up,
You're what I want to be;
Then I will have a little child
Who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right,
And know that I was true,
So walk a little slower, Daddy,
For I must follow you.

Baby monitors can be a two edged sword.
Great for keeping tabs on the little ones, but, when they are sick or might be in need, the monitor that is supposed to give you peace of mind, end up being watched/listened to, waiting, waiting, listening, watching, waiting, waiting, watching, listening...

Kind of like the garage monitor I installed to let me know when my ex tried to break into my house. At least that one has motion detection, though, so I didn't have to watch it constantly to catch her. : )

Ratyson - Been there done that. Best thing you can do is remain calm, address the situation and make sure you ask the doctors a lot of questions. My youngest had febrile seizures. She's 15 now and a total PITA. I blame the seizures. And her mother. And hormones.

More bad news. Our dear friend Dale is in the hospital in ICU at Lanier in Gainsville. He has a blood clot in his leg and it must be pretty serious.

Russel it a tough thing to go through and I feel for you and your daughter. Seems like most of us have had some hard times but with love and understanding things seem to work itself out. Godbless!!!
