OK, I am having a problem with my 9S. First let me start by saying that I have put a jumper in my low/high beem switch so that both lights are on. The high beam is always on, and with the switch I can turn the low beam on and off. So my high beem indicator light is always on.

Now let me try to explain the problem. I turn the key on and the needles do the little dance. But sometime my headlights do not come on, so the high beam indicator does not appear. When this happens and I then turn my kill switch to on my fuel injection does not come on making that high pitched whining sound. AND when I then hit the starter button nothing happens, dead.

So I then have to turn everything off and start over. Sometimes when I turn the key on my lights DO come on. So I turn the kill switch on and my FI comes to life. Hit the starter button and the bike fires up, BUT, then all of a sudden the head lights go out and the bike dies.

So I have to turn everything off and start over. Sometimes when I turn the key on my headlights come on and sometimes they don't. The strange thing to me is that after doing this for a few minutes the bike will fire up and stay running. Once it is running there is absolutely no problem and I can ride it for hours. And once the bike has been running I can turn it off and then back on with no problem. The problem is just with cold starts. The bike always ends up starting but I have to go through the above scenario for about 5 minutes first.

Hope I have explained the situation well enough. Hope someone can give me some advice being as wiring and things electrical are not my strong points.

Thanx Jason

Update: Now the headlight WILLNOT come on, the FI will not prime when the kill switch is turned on, and the starter is dead.

The process that I had to go through in my last post will no longer get the bike to start. So why would it gradually get worse and then finally go dead? I have checked all my connections, fuses, and the jumper that I made in the high/low beem switch. All my signals and tail light are fine.

I need some help guys.

Sounds like you have a power drain form a incorrect connection or your modified wiring is affecting the whole electrical system.

Try going back to the original set-up and new battery.

Just throwing out some ideas.

Let me clarify one other thing. That jumper that I made for the "both on" head lights was done over 6 months ago and have not had any problems until now.

And I looked at it today and it looks fine.

Man this is really gettin to be fun. Went outside to work on the bike. Figured I might as well retorque the headset to get rid of the brake shimmy. I figured what the hell lets try it again. Turn on the key and, Hey I've got lights! Throw the kill switch and, Hey theres the FI! Hit the start button and she fires right up! Its actually still runnin right now. Want it to warmup so I can check the oil.

SSOOOO, what the hell is goin on around here?

Just guessing here, but what B_S has suggested is my bet also. While your bike is idling, see how it shakes? That is why (I'm still guessing) it took six months to show up. If it were me I'd set it back up to stock. Electrical problems can get worse as time goes on, the damage getting greater and greater, I'm not guessing here.

You have a front end power drain that's causing a battery backup. Try inverting the sequence and retry the procedure. Remember Electrons only move from negative to positive and Holes only move from positive to negative.

zip is on to something. excess holes in system. try a new battery, preferably one with more electrons/ less holes. seriously though, the headlite switch mod is NOT your problem. you have an intermittant connection on your main power feed.if you are certain that your battery terminal bolts are CLEAN and TIGHT, then pull a couple screws off the fuse holder assy, peek underneath and inspect the terminals ending in the main 30 amp fuse. next step, have the local auto electric shop (look in the yellow pages) LOAD TEST your battery. do report back what you find. and good luck.

Check for the extraneous and loose and rubbed-through wire that is apparent behind the headlights. There's a topic in here somewhere... yep found it...

Might be related to your problem. No fuse blowing but a slight short that is not strong enough to blow the fuse might be causing other problems.

Here's where I am. I removed the jumper just to see what would happen, well the problem still exists. I didn't think that would be it because others have done the same thing and the solder job looked good.

My terminals are spotless and tight. You guys are getting over my head when you say "holes in system" and all that electron stuff.

Fullpower: what would I be looking for if I pull the fuse holder assy?

Thepup: The relays would be the larger rectangular dodads next to the fuses? And how would I know if one is bad?

I really appreciate the inf guys, my knowledge of electricety is VERY basic. What sucks is that I am working out of town in Lake Charles, LA. monday thru Thursday and was wanting to take my bike down there when I go back Sunday. One of the guys I'm staying with has a Honda CBsomthing 1100 and wants me to bring my bike down.

The thing is when I told him I ride a Buell he said "I heard those things are junk". So you can understand why I want to get up and running.

when it happened to me I moved them around, because each one controls something different, and that got me home,I checked them the next day and could see one looked a little burnt, changed it and haven't had a problem with it since.

Man, I hope you get that thing goin' good. I want that Honda to feel inadequate. All I can say is what others have. Probably a bad wire connection somewhere. I don't think your mod did anything wrong. Good luck.

Jason,
1)When you turn on the ignition and the headlights don't come on, move the bars vigorously full lock left and right, to test if there's some sort of problem in the handlebar area. If nothing changes:
2) What the pup said, there's 3 rectangular doodads inside the fuse box, all have the same numbers on them (in my 04 12), they are relays marked as "key switch" "start" and "ignition" in the wiring diagram. A faulty ignition relay would cause exactly the symptoms you describe. I don't know which is which and the FM ain't helping much wait a minute the ignition relay is on the RHS at the front, try swapping it with the one right behind it. If the ignition relay is faulty then your bikes headlights and fuel pump should come on every time, but the starter will be intermittent. At least this will confirm if you're on the right track. As Pup said check for burn marks under the relay. I would be surprised if an auto electric shop couldn't give you a replacement non-Buell relay straight off the shelf that plugs straight in.
3)I dunno.

Problem solved! I really am thankful for the help, it turned out to be one of the relays just like Thepup and Opto said. Thanx guys. I called up the local HD shop and they had the relays in stock, guess they're good for something after all. I bought two just in case.

Jason, just for future reference, those relays are the same that you can buy at any auto parts store. Chances are they'll never cause another problem, but it might save a few bucks. hell, I've got 15-20 of them in my bag, along with connectors and terminals...never know when the damned things might come in handy!

Jason, were the relays firmly pushed into place or could one have been slightly loose?

A while back some folk had problems with fuses/relays vibrating loose and suggested putting a piece of foam inside the fusebox cover to ensure the stuff doesn't wiggle loose.
