I rode in to work yesterday with my Gerbing jacket liner. 31F when I got to work at 6AM...75 mph on the slab for over 30 minutes and I was absolutely comfortable. In fact, I was so warm, I needed a cold glass of water when I got to work.
I know everyone says this, but I REALLLLLLLLY wish I bought heated gear long ago! This new experience is so great, my liner is now as integral as tires or an engine. Low bulk, absolute warmth, extended riding season. What else could you ask for? BTW, the coldest I've done prior is 15-20F for about an hour. I was so bulked up, it just wasn't fun. Had a hard time moving around and couldn't really do good head checks. This is MUCH better.
I went out in a t-shirt the other morning.. it definitely woke me up, temp started at around the low 30's and I was cruising at a good 80 or so for a bout 45 min. reminded me of when I used to go polar bear swimming.
Hydrating in cold weather is still important. I got the frozen skin riding into the wind for 45 minutes on a day when the wind chill was already -60 degrees f. I never really felt the cold. When I got into a tub of cold water at the end of the ride to warm up, the skin cracked like broken safety glass on a car. but the lines were red not white. That cold water felt burning hot.
There was a thick layer of frost on my seat this morning When I suited up to ride home @ 3am. Heated jacket liner and the uly`s heated grips made it a fine ride! The money I`ve saved on fuel has paid for the suit and liner and then some!
I see videos like that and just HATE living in an area with very few decent turns. I have to go waaaaay north and west to get to something remotely close to that. I'll keep watching the video though.

Hey 1324, I've been sayin' that I'm old enough now so..."this year I'm buying heated gear" I still have not ! I think I am going to do it with this weeks paycheck and I will credit you as being the one who made me finally come to my senses. I've been riding year round in Dirty Jersey for my whole life and I've really gotten to hate it in the winter months. Sometime before the new year I am going on a little recon run to the south west to find a new place to call home. I hate the winter that much. I work outside and am just sick of it. I can't wait to fire up the Muelly and point it down and to the left.

Heated gear rocks. I'm glad I got mine, although I only have the vest. Best thing about it is not feeling worn out at the end of a clod ride. Being able to remain relaxed in the cold is a big win.

Yeah, you'll really like it, Skin. I hope we don't hype it up too much for you, but in my case, it couldn't have been over-hyped. It really is that good. Would you willingly ride around in your cage w/o heat all winter? I sure as hell wouldn't!
There will come a time that our grandkids will look at us like have 8 heads when we tell them how we used to dress up like the Michelin man w/o heated gear.

Rode to work yesterday at 29 degrees. My head was getting quite cold in spots. I pulled the liner out of the helmet and stuffed the vent holes with wads of paper towel from the inside to block the cold air. This morning was 31 degrees and my head was toasty warm. Some day I may have to get some heated gear. A heated vest would be nice on the -10 degree mornings in the cage!

A vest really works well, especially if can only buy one piece of gear. Keeping your core warm makes riding a lot nicer, more relaxed. One think I can't do without is my neck gaiter, I got one of the Buell give-aways, it really comes in handy.
the vests work good, but if you can swing the extra, get the whole heated jacket liner. still keeps your core good and warm but has the benefit of keeping your arms and shoulders warm also, which keeps the blood flowing to your hands warmer... hence the fact that your hands dont get as cold either.
i know i had alot of years of"im not a wuss i dont need any heated gear."
now i think to myself, "god was i stupid why'd i wait so long?!"
I keep thinking about the vest. Not for riding, but for camping in a bivvy bag in the winter. How many hours could I get out of a motorcycle battery with out the battery being in a running bike? Being where no-one thinks a person could possibly be is where I like to be.
I was riding home this evening 44 degrees and a pair of jeans in the rain. That water felt cold.
It was hailing here! I was glad I was in the car. I need a winter POS so bad. I would rock heated gear below 30 degrees just for the comfort factor. Suzuki DR350? Cheap and around.......
heated gear would be nice....but wont be getting any this year....maybe next.... Late Spring and early Summer you can find some real deals. I got my vest in the Summer for $20.
I love my Gerbings brand jacket and gloves. HD sells it with the HD logo and a markup, but if you are ever on the road and need a new thermostat or something, you can get it at pretty much any HD dealer. Works great in any temperature I've tried.
That pic rocks Froggy. I used to do that crap in high school without heated gear. Just LOTS of layers, and only 5 miles or so to go. I'm seriously going to be looking into the spring and summer deals, and a POS in the stable to thrash on. I'm not cool enough to try riding without some heated stuff. I'll run down to 26-28 F before I start gettin chilly.
Glitch: took your advice about the neck gaiter. Bought one (Hotpaws) yesterday for a bit more than $10. Wore it today at a standing windchill of 3°C. No idea what the temperature would be after an hour and a half at around 60mph: COLD.
Anyway, it made a huge difference to my ride.
Looking at the newenough.com heated gear by tourmaster.
I can ride here for about another week but it'll snow soon and they'll salt the roads. That'll do it for me.
I really feel for you guys who have to deal with extreme environments for nearly half the year.
I was built to shed heat. I'm tall/long limbed and have a shaved head. This combo makes for a very nice summer when it's 112F and people are dropping like bugs.
Then comes the winter. As the temp drops below 50F (yes fifty) I start shaking so bad I can't think. I've chipped teeth from shivering when I was in the Air Force.
A few years ago the wife and I decided to trade the five series sedan in for an X5 before the baby was born. The X5 has heated seats and I'd never had those before. I will never be without them now. Ever. The seats heat up in three settings and my god I could go right to sleep as soon as they heat up. I'm not shaking, chattering, leaning forward (or rocking back and forth like rainman).
This brings me all the way to last month when I bought my STT. Right before it gets cold and rainy. I'm now looking for a rugged vest or jacket liner that's electric and has a controller. I must be able to heat my torso, or by the end of my ride everyday, my heart will be fibrillating from the cold.
It looks like I'll be spending some dough on this heated stuff too. I can't find a vest and controller combo for less than $200.
Heated grips, heated gloves, full jacket liner, and my BAW got me to Florida from Tennessee for the Daytona bike races in March again this past year. And who knew it was going to drop to 38F for camping in the infield. where the wind was at 15 to 20 mph all night.
It was 32F degrees when I left at noon, still in the 30's in Atlanta, and in South Georgia it hit 48F for a short time.....just before the sun went down. Down to 28F when I stopped for the night. 400+ miles of that in a day gets you cold to the core in spite of the gear.
