Just a friendly reminder...exhaust headers are not hand warmers. <facepalm>

My main gloves were alpinestar SP2's, just didn't cut it for the winter. I used to warm them up on the exhaust of my SV650 (muffler).

Got some Tourmaster Polartex gloves. They were still ice cold in the 20*F temperature. So, I did what I usually do..warmed them on the exhaust. Only these gloves are nylon, and the XB doesn't have a hot muffler to grab...it has boiling headers. They melted instantly.

So, I don't want to throw money away. It's just a spot on one finger, and a larger spot on the pinky. Should be able to sew it back up. Just use nylon thread, right?

So, what do you guys do for these temps? I'm thinking handguards and/or heated grips? We're 7/8" for grips? What length? Any cheap recommendations for very thick comfy grips?

buell traction grips and a set of $30 grip heaters from any dirtbike shop. for that kind of cold, you'll want better wind protection than the buell handguards offer...

are handguards worth getting though? I hate the look of them, but if it makes riding comfortable...

Weather is brutal though. I basically have 20 minutes before I HAVE to stop and warm up. Even then, my fingers are numb. It's not even that they ache, it's that I'm afraid of getting frostbite.

I noticed just from touching the exhaust for 3 seconds though, that that hand lasted 2-3 minutes longer before going numb than the other. So, maybe heaters are worth their weight in gold.

I had them on my XB. W/o the guards, my heated grips and the same gloves you had were good into the 20's for about 30-60 minutes. With the hand guards, I was able to ride into the 15-20 degree range for the same duration.

Others will soon be chiming in to get you to buy heated gloves. I've never tried them...

I use heated grips and heated gloves in the winter. Grips won't heat the back of your hand, and my gloves lack heating elements in the palms so you get a better feel on the grip. My next step is to add a set of those hippo hands things that act like giant mittens over your bar.

I didn't like the handguards one bit. Ugly, and virtually useless against wind, IMO. More useless in a spill... come all to pieces. If you're getting guards, at least go for some real ones with a metal brace.

Disposable hand warmer packets from Wal-Mart fit inside my gloves & against back of hand. And atop the toes inside boots.
Significant difference, but no heat when wet.

Is that...safe? lol.

Then again, I don't see any time where you'd need to take your hands off the bars, really.

those appear to be the offical ones from the hippo hands website?

Either that, or Hungry hungry hippo brand, or maybe King Hippo from punchout.

I ordered a set of the Buell traction grips. They look great for my huge grubby mitts.

Trying to decide upon a set of grip
heaters now. I'll try that and see how it helps.I'm just trying to find cost effective grips with an attractive switch. Everyone seems to just include radio shack toggle switches. I'm trying to find something with a molded switch enclosure that clips to the bars or something.

i just grab onto the cylinder, but I have a blast, so the exhaust doesn't get in the way.
I can also put my hands on the frame since the oil is in the frame on the blast.

American Sport Bike sells heated grips and the OEM Buell switchpod. Since your profile says you have an 08, the switchpod will plug right in.

Also, I am warmer on the bike than in a cage. : )

The pic of the "Hippo hands" are hippo hands, must have bought the rights to the name from Vetter years ago, made by a guy in Canada, I have a set, a little pricy but work quite well, i can wear a regular pair of gloves with heated grips in 32 f temps.
