Alright- I've been lookin for some new tires and it's been a while. At this point, I have no brand loyalty so I'm open to anything.

I use my bike like we all should-for high speeds in the twisties and higher speeds in the straights. It's also my daily driver- unless there's 2 feet of snow on the ground.

I want to bump up to a 190 or 200 in the rear-

What should I get?
What are you riding on?
Good or bad reviews will help just the same-

Thanks!

My opinion is to stick with the 180 rear. It will handle better with it.

As for tire brands, I'm sure you'll get a mixed bag. I'm partial to the Pirelli Diablo line, anything from a Strada to a Corsa III.

Ive read a ton of times that the 180 rear handles better than the 190. I had to try the 190 out of curiousity and I do now know the difference. They both hold the corners just the same IMHO but the 180 transitions faster. It almost falls into the corner where the 190 needs to be pushed there. I actually prefer the 190 for cornering. The "falling" into the corners I find harder to regulate.

On another note I have read many times that the 190 is no wider because the rim is the same width. This is also false. The 190 2ct michelins are 7/16 wider. Its not a lot but it is wider.

BTW my vote is for the 190 michelin pilot power 2ct. the corner excellent and last pretty well. I got almost 9000 miles on my rear and that was with 2500 miles of slab in a weeks time. That trip squared off that tire bad.

im riding on corsaIII's right now, and only have to compare are the 2ct's. I've never used the 2ct fronts, but have used it as a rear tire several times. the 2ct is a very hard-edged tire meant to take corners and has a good overall life too the end. while my brand new corsa rears feel like my 2ct's did at the end of their life, and i bet its going get worse near the end.. corsa's are touring tires compared to the 2ct's.. but i really love the corsaIII front tire and havent found anything better; its smooth predictable and doesnt get squirrley

Another + for the Stradas. They're technically a sport-touring tire, but handle light years better than the Diablo T's which are supposed to be a sport tire.

Keep it coming though-

I am looking for a sport tire- if you think I shouldn't, I'd like to hear why....

180 in the back and the Pilot Power's made my 12R handle like it's on rails. Turns very quick and very confidence inspiring.
I understand the 190 will work according to others here, but from past experience, the 180 will allow you to transfer from side to side faster.

In my opinion, it makes the OEM tires feel like your driving a loaded Mack truck.

I just put the bridgestone BT16 on. So far they hold good once warmed up . It will be a while before I know about tread life. Price is about $100 cheaper a set than Michelin pilots

After burning through a set of Dunlops in about 6000 kilometres, I bought Conti Road Attacks. I read a bunch of reviews and figured if I was going to check out tires, I'd start with the lower priced of the quality names.

Got a good deal on a set, Bluestreakracing.ca, here in Ontario.

I would say my riding skills have dramatically improved with these tires. There's almost no strip left on the left side and maybe an inch on the right (oncoming traffic slows me down). Changing lines mid corner is no hassle. Braking is great.

I've got about 2000 kliks on them now. If they last as long as I hope, I'm not going to go to any higher priced tire.

Plus the tread pattern is so cool.

I just got the Strada's, over 700 miles on them so far. My first tires were the Diablo T's, which were great, but slippery in the rain, next I got the Rosso's, awesome tire wet or dry! Now on the Strada's, they do handle great, but slip easily under hard braking because of the harder compound in the center. The front tire slips pretty easly, which is very scary, especially when you need it. Anyone else share my opinion?

The benefit is that they should last longer, I only got around 4500 out of the T's and the Rosso's. But after the Strada's I think I might go back to the Rosso's. The whole front tire slip doesn't sit well with me.

One bad expierience is all I need to look at another tire. I don't want to be the next to share your opinion, if ya know what I mean.
The Rosso's, huh? I'll check those out....the pilot powers sound pretty good, too. Getting good reviews. I live in MN, weather can be 90 and dry one day and 45 and wet the next. I definetly need a soft tire that has good rain traction too.

Front tire slip? I always back it down a notch in the rain and 2 in the snow. Only time I slid the front Strada was on wet leaves. Still stayed on top. Locking a front wheel is like out driving your headlights. A man has to know his limitations.

Two suggestions:

1. Forget about larger tire. See above.

2. Get some Michelin Pilot Road 2's. They handle great, and are supposed to last twice as long as the normal soft sport tire.

Here is a recent thread on the topic:

I run metzlers and will continue to run them as long as i have a bike. I ran Pirelles and they seamed to "square off" in less then 2000 miles. i got almost 3 on my metzlers they look and feel like new.

if you want more miles out of a set, do as I did: get a set of Michelin Pilot Roads (or road 2s). I've got about 1500 miles on em already, and they look like new. most claim they get 10-12,000 miles out or the rear. I just got sick of buying tires more than once per year.

I have almost 4500 on my Metzlers and will be lucky to get 1k more out of the rear. It is squared off pretty good but I ride straight...tooo much! I am thinking of going with the Michelins as well.

I'm running Dunflop D208s. The previous owner of the bike put a new rear on it right before I bought the bike. I have 1000mi on it, and its already showing problems. My front is almost toast. Instead of buying a new front, I'm gonna hit the burnout box at The Wildlife Refuge (a bar in Kansasville), and roast the new rear. I'm thinking Pilot Powers, or the new Metzler Z6 Interact.......................................... .....................stupid dunflops.

pilot powers are getting a lot of votes....hmmmmm, so after hours of reading reviews and reading what you guys have said, i have come down to three tires.

!. Stradas
2. Pilot Power (maybe the 2ct?)
3. Pilot Road

i need to just pick, buy and ride.....

Im on my second set of Shinko Stealths, 10K miles on the last set, They're sticky as all get out and have a pretty flat profile(more of a street/drag tire than road race)I have a 190 on the back and it looks great with no loss of handling compared to the same tire in 180...cheap too, 220 mounted and balanced from cycle gear.

I have been running Continental Sport Attacks since I bought the bike. I love 'em.

It came with a 190 on the rear, I just switched back to 180 (same tire).
Ill have to agree with RPM4X4, on the cornering between the two. It is taking some getting used to with the 180 "falling in" on corners. The 190 I prefer so far, time will tell.

So far, no HD/Buell dealers will install a tire I don't buy from them. WTF? Also, I'm having trouble with ALL shops telling me that a 190 won't fit. WTFx2? Third, Im now looking at the Rosso's. Anybody else ride on that?

Also- a 2003 xb9r stock rear is a 180/55. If I go 190, do I go 190/50 or 190/55?

I really wanted the Strada, most of you like it- is it sticky enough to stay soft in cold weather? A sport/touring tire just seems like it's gonna be harder then the Rosso-

Compromise durabilty for handleing, right? Where's the balance?

Thanks for all your intel on this, you guys are way more helpful than anyone at ANY shop I've gone to.....

If they won't mount your tire, they don't want your business, take it elsewhere. The Buell rim was designed for 180 and 190, the 190 is 190/50/17

The Stradas have worked very well for me. my current rear has 12,000 miles on it and is still looking good. I drive 100 miles a day on the freeway, but 3 days a week, I take the canyon home to keep the profile of the tire from getting too square. As far as the compound, it is best for sport riding in all weather conditions, and can be considered a better wet/cold tire than the t's or the III's
