My clutch cable broke yesterday when I was out riding. My bike only has 9k miles! Anybody else have this happen? | ||

You KNOW for a fact it's a broken cable? I ask because,a similar symptom is a broken primary cover. | ||

Yes. 9K sounds about right. The cable has been upgraded since you bought your bike, is now teflon lined. Make sure you put some waterproof grease where it goes into the clutch lever, perhaps smoothing the parts out a bit with some very fine emery cloth. Work hardening of the inner cable at the lever end is your enemy here. The good news: the teflon lined cable reduces the effort required to pull in the lever. | ||

umm..yes, i know its a broken clutch cable, it broke right at the lever. 9k shouldn't be the life expectancy of a clutch cable, thanks a lot for the advice, I appreciate it. I have to go out to the dealer tomorrow to pick up a new cable, I'm guessing it'll run between 30 and 40 bucks. | ||

I don't remember what the brand was but I read here once, that someone upgraded there clutch cable with an aftermarket one that was a lot smoother than stock because of the lining in the cable. | ||

9k shouldn't be the life expectancy of a clutch cable its not. i have yet to replace one of those on either of my 03's. never needed one on either of the 04's either. had one clutch cable all but break on an 01 blast with about 7000 on it but the thing looked like it had had a pretty rough life when we got it. but i couldnt pass it up. | ||

Make sure you take extra care when you are threading it into the primary case. I broke one because it's such a crappy design. My cable broke at around 10k miles. | ||

Just replaced mine with the cable break at the lever. 2004 with over 24,000 miles on the original cable. lubed often but somethings do not last forever. new cable has the teflon and cost around 30 dollars. just snug up the cable where it goes into the case and buy a new o-ring for the seal there. it doesn't come with the cable. | ||

Lack of lubrication at the cable end, in the lever, causes this failure. The cable end does not rotate as the lever is pulled/released. This bends the cable until it breaks. | ||

I just disconnected my clutch cable at the lever, and mine has a metal liner around the end that allows for smooth operation. | ||

Mine broke around 9K also. It snapped right at the lever. I think it might have been in the environment too much.Its only 35 bucks and takes 15 minutes to install. A little tip though. Only lightly snug the cable to the trans case till the o-ring seats and quit. If you over torque it will snap off and you will have to spend another 35 bucks. | ||

'snug' might be too strong of a word for the crappy design on the primary end of that cable. I broke a brand new cable thinking I was snugging it. For the 2nd new cable I bought, I stopped turning pretty much as soon as it touched. The rubber o-ring does all the sealing, so you don't need much thread tension at all. My original, non plastic coated cable pretty much broke at 20k miles - I was down to 3 strands by the time I found out! If you notice excessive play at the lever, check to see if you have any broken strands as you pull in the lever! | ||

9k shouldn't be the life expectancy of a clutch cable It's common to break at the top fitting. If you look at the angle the lever pulls, it's extraordinarily sharp and kinks the cable. As mentioned above, keeping the cable end lubed so it rotates easily in the lever helps quite a bit. | ||

I use the term dinosaur as a term of endearment. If these bikes came with a juice clutch I would be converting mine to cables. I'm kind of a less is more kind of guy. | ||

mr2shim +1 on being careful threding into primary. my first attempt broke halfway in the primary = new cable and new primary. ouch. | ||

I made it back in town late last night and ran out to the dealer today to get my cable, they said I'd have to wait til Friday..but its going to be 68 and sunny tomorrow! Does anybody know where I can possibly get one overnight? | ||

Mine broke at the handle at 7,000 miles. It was a warranty fix. They put the new one in and didn't lube it either. When I change my oils I lube the cable and haven't had a problem since. | ||

is the R cable shorter or longer than the S clutch cable? mine hasn't broke yet, but i see it starting to fray at the top end... after 19 k and a few bouts with gravity. |
