Try it, you'll like it!
So far it's the best $perHP there is.
AND you can feel it.
Smoother all round, and we all know smooth = fast.

So now the question is, when will the XB12 airbox cover become standard on the 9s? Minus the little exhaust doodad, of course.

Hi all. I've been computerless for quite a while till now. This topic has made me wonder the same as Darthane. I'm kinda hoping the 2004 9R comes with the 12 airbox. T'would seem like a logical step for Buell (one box for both = less cost right?)
I keep wavering between the 12 & the 9 (more power vs. cheaper insurance)but the two thousand dollar difference is alot of money to a road paver that doesn't work much in the rainy winter months so I think my plans for the 9 are gonna prevail over the 12.

Anybody got an idea when they're gonna start making the 2004 XB9R? I'm hoping one will be available at least by Aprill.

I'm still riding around on my Sporty and allthough I don't hate it, after riding an XB9R a couple times the old Harley just doesn't cut the mustard. (It just barely licks the jar)

There's a red 12R at the local shop now and OH MY GOD! She's a ravenous beauty. I don't know if they demo her out but I'm afraid to ask. If they say yes and hand me the key I'll be doomed for sure. As long as I don't ride it I can resist it.

I was told by a dealer four months ago, not till Spring or Summer of 2004 due to the large demand for the twelves.
Well I guess now's the time to light a fire under my a$$ and pretty up the Sporty and sell her. I got lots of free time right now to sand & polish her. (damn salt air)

The airbox covers are different part numbers for the '04 XB9 and XB12. So why not use the one with the venturi tube for both? I don't know. Perhaps an engineering type will explain.

But I wonder if Buell doesn't want the 9 to be too close to the 12 in performance in order to help justify the price difference in the two models.

the 04 9's won't be here til the spring time so what you heard at first is correct.

your fuel system will love you even more if you give it the 12 airbox.and yes the ecm will compensate for it.

My friend & I have just dyno'd our 2 4000ml 03 XB9s's using 3 options: (1) Standard airbox (2) 12lid on the 9 base (3)Chopped-up 9lid (all the plastic removed apart from thin strips,where it attaches to the base-plate (bit like a spider).

The dyno is in Southampton UK,therefore it is roughly at sea level,and it was a rainy day 6c'ish.

1# Standard 9 airbox @ 72.7rwhp 59.3Ft Lb torque.

2# 12lid on the 9's baseplate 75.3rwhp,62.8Ft Lb torque.

3# Hacked-up 9lid 75.4rwhp,60.1Ft Lb torque.

1&2 were dyno'd on my mates 9s No:3 was on my 9s.

It appears both the 12lid & the hacked-up 9lid do offer an improvement over the standard item,although the chopped lid looses 2.7Ft Lb to the 12lid.

I've got a 12lid on order,to replace my chopped-up 9 lid.

I only have the graph for my 9s (with the chopped-airbox) but can probely get hold of the other graphs (standard airbox & 12lid on the 9 base) within a few days,I need to e-mail my mate,they are all seperate runs on seperate pieces of paper btw.

I forget to mention on my previous posting of the dyno figures that both bikes have the full Buell "race" kit fitted & the snorkel removed !

I don't seem to be able to post my dyno-chart as it's to big,and I don't know how to re-size it (i'm not very Pc literate) If you'd like it e-mailed directly,please contact me @ StooBr2@Hotmail.com

I've got a digital picture the other graph if anyone is interested ? It shows a standard airbox on a "race" kitted 9s & the same 9s with the 12lid fitted.

The dyno graph attached shows 2 runs done on a 03,4000ml, stage1 Buell race-kitted 9s with the stock 9 lid,and the 12lid on the 9base.

That is really quite impressive for such a small change in design. Were the runs on the exact same bike on the same day?
I've got the 12 cover on my 9 and now I'm wondering if the machined aluminum velocity stack might have some more of the same magic.

It's about $300. I emailed them and got a price. There's a "thermal barrier" also. I'm not sure just what this is. I have to investigate further.

anyways how about trying to find a hotrod inlet trumpet that will fit with an adequate rubber boot?

The thermal barrier is a heat blanket that goes under the airbox baseplate. It is intended to keep heat from the engine heating the air in the airbox. Cooler air is better, although I'm not sure just how much of a real impact the blanket would have.

My girlfriend (I mean wife ;)) is no where near that tight!

Love it Brion, I am running 4 dyno runs Thursday, I will let you know the preliminary data as far as Torque Curves and HP. You already have the favorable A/F Ratio Numbers.

Running like a champ on my 2003 XB9, Strong mid range without adversely affecting my top-end.. in fact a quicker roll-on from 80-120 has been noticed over stock.

Jerseyguy "BOTH" the runs shown were done on the same bike,a 4000ml 03 XB9s fitted with the full Stage1 factory kit & the snorkel removed. Both runs were within a hour of each other (enuff time to change the lids over).

The runs were done at sea-level @ Dockgate20 HD/Buell (Southampton UK) the day was overcast and raining approx 6c.

Stoobr2 - Thanks for reaffirming the test procedure. There can be no doubt that 12 cover is an improvement.

Darthane - I've been emailing the makers of the velocity stack and the thermal blanket. The "kit" is $290. They claim a 15 degrees cooler air inside the airbox when using the thermal blanket.

If I'm not mistaken it's without holes.
I think it was Buckinfubba that said holes in a 12 box top would ruin it.

well it won't ruin it but on a but dyno it didn't feel as good. but I haven't dynoed it yet
