http://www.trackdaymag.com/

TrackdayMag.com's cover story this month introduces a Buell XB12R which we've purchased from auction and will be featuring in the coming months. Our intent is to modify the machine, then use it for trackdays and racing. We figured you XB fans would enjoy the series and maybe even provide some feedback and direction for the project.
Please note that I'm not trying to spam your board or sell anything here. the magazine is free for anyone to read online. For us, the best scenario is that this series of articles will inspire more of you Buell riders to participate in trackdays!

im all for that!

i plan on keeping an eye on the artical. so where would we send some ideas/feedback about this?

im tellin you, ditch tha jardine and throw a drummer on it, more power all around and the smoothest torque/power curve you could ever want even with a bone stock computer on it. tune it and you will really see some improvement.

spend alot of time dialing in the suspension. these things are set up well.

the 6 piston front brake works damn good, but if you can swing it go for the 8 piston off of the newer buells

Thanks for the input, No_rice. Right here would be a great place for the feedback. Our direction for the exhaust isn't firm yet. Suspension is 100% on the list. We actually pride ourselves in covering that area well. (See our Suspension 101 articles.) Since we're usually more oriented (pun totally intended) with Asian machines, we're hoping to haunt the forums and let Buell enthusiasts teach us about our new Buell!

as far as I can tell I like what ya'll do in the way of restoring mistreated bikes. Also from reading that article I learned a place to get cheap mistreated bikes to play with.

As for as things you should do with ya'lls project I would have to say aside form the tips above go with some ecmspy tuning. kn air filter. some axle sliders from dark horse.

Bad web is full of great info. If you are not getting the answers you need here you are not asking the right questions!

I love this line here! I can totally relate.

Still, if you’ve been in this sport long enough, you reach a point where you’ve built and ridden so many GBRSXYZ 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 machines that they all start to blend together. If nothing else, you’ll never mistake a Buell for any other motorcycle. That may be the thing we like most about our new project!

Looking forward to your future writings.

Well you just picked up a new reader. Good luck and look forward to your thoughts on the bike after you have had a few track days on it.

One cool topic for your series would be crash protection and "crash durability" of the XB's when properly equiped.
At a recent track day both CaptNemo and I went down. He went down twice and I went down once. The combined total damage to our bikes was less than $150 (shifter-$30, handlebars-$50, and a wind screen $60)
Other bikes went down that weekend sustaining several thousand dollars worth of damage. One of them was a GSXR 600 that went down in the same corner and same speed as I did. I know this because I was chasing him when I went down and he went down the next session after me. The scrape marks left by his bike actually lined up with mine. He was able strip all the busted fairings from his machine and ride the next day but when he took it to the shop his insurance company totaled it out.

No track XB track bike is complete with out frame pucks, axle sliders, and bar ends. I had the first two but unfortunately I didn't have bar ends and my bars caught and bent putting me out for the day. Nemo's bike had a set of DarkHorseMoto's barend sliders which I'm convinced saved his bars in his first crash that weekend. The barend slid and bent absorbing the damage that could have ruined his bar.

BTW a sport touring windscreen does wonders to create a air bubble to ride in. It is used on most race bikes and is a good piece for a track bike.

Guys, K3 is the real deal. A good guy to be with on the track. I've attended 3 Inside Passes with the man. But, I'm betting he wished that Buell was a Super TT : )

flip the shifter to gp style if you prefer. It's easy and free on the buell. I like it better for everyday riding.

I don't think anyones getting kelly BB retail for a buell in perfect condition.

Thanks, Moosestang. We were wondering about the GP shift thing, since that's what we like. Be quiet about the bluebook value. It's how we lie to the wives about all the money we're saving!

Steve, you can take a bow. When I wrote in the article about how Buell people were a big part of the reason we decided to do a Buell project, you were one of the folks I had in mind. You and your friends were great to hang out with and the passion and creativity that's gone into your bikes is truly impressive. I blame YOU for this whole sordid episode....

Good attitude. I'm glad to see people give the bike a chance despite it's inability to run with a GSXR1000 in a drag race. I can't wait to see the upcoming installments. Good luck.

New reader here. Look at the big cheese eating grin on the thumbs up tire smoker in the rain picture. There's a Buell rider. One of my favorite things is doing the visor up big grin lookin' at the driver next to me at the light pose, just before launch.

Rain? Look closer. That's SNOW! Actually, though we needed a cover picture in spite of the weather, a burnout wasn't the first choice. I don't want to tell you how close to Darwin the big cheese eater came when he tried to do a wheelie a few seconds earlier....

Ahh, few more miles on the bike and he'll be doing wheelies in the snow. (LEGAL DISCLAIMER: Don't do wheelies in the snow!!!)

Best thing to do to the Buell is ride it lots.

Budget???

Penske 3-way shock; AK-20 cartridges, re-valving, re-springing forks.

Chain conversion

Programmable ECM REGARDLESS of intake/exhaust.

No need to do engine mods unless it is being opened up already for other reasons.

IF you are ONLY doing sprints, you may consider taking off the rotor/stator for total loss electrical. Helps a bit with throttle response and is "free" power - but you're kinda committed to being on the charger every time you return to the pits.

if this is full race only, then there is also yanking the starter and a TON of wiring. you can still lighten that thing up alot. then chop the subframe right behind the drivers seat. take the pillion out and just rivit down the pillion cover to the tail(unless your getting a one piece race tail)

then the even more obvious stuff. remove the whole headlight assembly, speedo, you know the drill. you can make these things severly anorexic if you are willing to do some work.

I'm very pleased to say that some of the same companies who support this board have offered assistance for the Red White and Buell project. That's all I'd like to reveal for now though, so as not to give away the content of future articles.

The Buell community is really amazing....

I gotta start following your progress.

If you are EVER going to be out in CA, let's get you to come out to play with us at Willow!!

I'm surprised no one recommended downloading ecmspy and burning the race maps to the stock ecm, with k&N filter and appropriate exhaust of course.

www.xoptiinside.com

You can find the factory race maps for the xb12 in the downloads section and you can even buy a cable from them. Just don't try to burn the race eeprom onto the factory ecm and save the stock eeprom first.

changing to gp-shift is simple. Just turn the shifter arm 180 degrees or more, I did more, and mount it backwards.

After 3 days of shifting this way i'll never go back. Any easy way to get the stains off my primary cover?

Tire foam gets it off. Spray it on thick, let it sit a minute and rinse it off.
