I plan on buying an XB within the next year so doing as much research as possible relating to the pros/cons of each model year.

I noticed the following difference cosmetically, but was wondering if there is a significant mechanical difference as well..

07 and earlier:

08 and later:

I remember reading somewhere that the 09 uses eletronic valve control? Maybe this is way off the wall - I can't find anything on the Buell website backing it up.

The reason that the crank cover is more oval then round for 08+ is that they changes it for the higher RPMs. 08+ has 7100 red line where as 07- had a 6800 red line. The 08+ still has some ECM problems but should be worked out soon.

08 & up has DDFI3 fuel injection.
07 & earlier has DDFI2 excluding 03 & 04 9R & 9S. I'm kinda, sorta sure that the 9's got the DDFI2 in 05, when they changed the two piece throttle body to a one piece throttle body like that on the 12's.

08 & 09 has crank sensor so timing and idle are now handled by the computer. There is no longer an idle adjustment screw.

09 I believe has a new fuel map for better gas mileage but it can be flashed onto existing 08's or so I hear.

There are a couple more subtle changes between 07 & 08 but I can't remember them at the moment.

The 08 and 09's have a larger oil cooler as well.

08 & 09 has crank sensor so timing and idle are now handled by the computer. There is no longer an idle adjustment screw.
This also means there are no more Throttle Position Sensor Resets, which is a common maintnance procedure for the earlier years.

After four Buells that gave me serious headaches, I finally have one that runs perfectly from idle to redline, has zero fluid leaks, gets decent mileage, and is a thrill to ride. I guess I got one of the "good" 08 XB12R's.

Has anyone had the 09 map that Metalstorm mentioned flashed into their 08 and did you notice any difference?

I just had my 08 remapped last week. Not sure if it is the 09 map as mentioned above. It made a huge difference from idle to wide open. I have the paper with the number of the reflash code and I will post it when I get home.

I believe my 08 12R has been reflashed at the last service (5k end of August). It runs considerably better, although gas mileage remains the same.

I may have the gas mileage confused with the 1125R (that reflash is supposed to increase mileage 15-20%) but I could swear I saw a post here somewhere where some one got better mileage on his 08 12 after getting a reflash.
Though I admit, after giving it some though that it could also have been due to having put more miles on the bike thus breaking her in more.

The important thing is that the 08's are running better with the new flash.

some claim ther 08s run better after the flash, many dont... mine was immaterial..this has been an ongoing discussion for a long time, if you do the search..

Ok my original program number was B31US25o and my new one is M31US25y. Not sure what it is worth but it helped and I said I would post it.

09 also got ZTL2 front disk brakes brakes (8 piston caliper)

So wait I had no idea the 09s got a bigger oil cooler, can anyone else confirm? do they use the same fittings? anyone swapped one into an earlier model?

So wait I had no idea the 09s got a bigger oil cooler,

The 08's AND 09's have a larger oil cooler than the 03-07's. The larger cooler came with the redesigned oil pumps. The older design pumps couldn't handle a larger oil cooler.

Your ECM controls your engine. To update your ECM, you take it to a dealership and they will 'flash' it (meaning connect your bike's ECM to their big computer, and install new programing).

If you haven't had your computer 'flashed' (or, your ECM updated) by your dealership yet, then you should be eligable and you can take it in. Call you dealership and ask if they have the new 'flash' to install on your bike.

A flash is just an updated computer program that Buell Motorcycle Company has made to help your bike run smooth/get better gas mileage/run cooler.

from what im reading, there is no difference.... ive got my eye on an 09, but my ultimate fear is that it would run as lousy at low speed as my 08 did... no test rides, so i guess its a shot in the dark...

God bless those '06 models! They may not run the smoothest in the world, but at least they get (in my case) 50+ mpg!
