I'm upgrading my 03 to the 04 and up belt system and got mine used. The pullies are a little beat up and I thought about powdercoating them as well as my tensioner, is this ok or will it do something bad to the belt? ie extra wear or slipage?

I've got a cherrybomb cover and flyscreen on the way soon and have given some thought to powdercoating my current rims and maybe these pullies and other "easy" pieces to remove and have them all match. My cost is only $75 for the rims and they said it was the set-up charge so If I do the same color cost won't go up much for other piecse, if at all.

Input??

powdercoating is OK, just don't powdercoat anyplace where there is belt contact. Tape all that off. Powdercoating is rather thick.

Well I'm paying to have it done. Is it hard for them to tape off the grooves?

@Damnut: Did you reuse the bearings after coating or get new ones? I have never done anything with bearings before.

and they are easy to replace. shoot me a PM if you need any help.

The thing to remember about powdercoating is that in order to get the powder to flow and make a continuous coating it must be baked in an oven at over 350ยบ.

Therefore, bearings must be removed before powder coating or the seals may melt and the lubrication will be ruined.

In addition, masking off is not at all difficult, but must be done with special high temperature tape.

You do not want any powdercoating on the teeth of the pulley's .

Your powdercoater will know all about these problems.
If it sounds like he may not, find a different shop.

One of our sponsors, Grandstand Designs, has a lot of experience powder coating Buell parts:

Badlionsfan I was wondering if you had to prep the part like a normal paint part/did you use just use a scotch brite pad to give the paint something to bite to?Also does anybody know if the make any spray can paint that looks similar to the amber rims on my bike if so what and where is it.

As for the spray paint; you can go to Shermin Williams or the like and get a can of spray paint custom made to any color you provide a sample of. SW makes great atoumotive paint, as good as Dupont and PPG.

I have a real good buddy who owns a powdercoat buisness, Gulf Coast Powdercoating, and he tries to sandblast everything he does and then acid dips it. The special tape is a must or you can use hi temp silicone in a pinch only on certain applications, like intricate areas.

He does many chopper and dragster frames. He has also done alot of work on John Grisham (writer) and some NASQUEER team owner's Trinity yacht's (the NASTCAR guy has a series of Ford Mustangs special built sumpin' like Saleen does. Forget his name as I'm not a fan of Mustangs or NASQUEER.)
Trinity is out of Biloxi, near his shop.

not sure what kind of prep was done, they guy who did all my paint work painted it.

as far as an amber paint to match your wheels, ride your bike to an automotive paint store and have them match your wheels.

Sweet bike jim! From the pictures it looks like your grooves on your belt pullies are painted black? Is it a bad angle or am I right? If so do you have any problems with slipage or more belt ware?

California69gs Thanks, the rear pulley is is probably the only thing stock on the bike. i am pretty sure it has powder coating on the teeth, and there is no slipage.

You guys thing coloring the pullies and tensioner cherrybomb is to over the top? Just stick with black?

I'll be putting a cherrybomb tank and flyscreen on, and soon as the tires need replacing powdercoating the rims cherrybomb.

The teeth on a stock tuber pulley are chromed to make the surface harder. I can't believe the XB would have soft powdercoat on the teeth of their pulleys. The size of the tooth would change as the paint wore down, and that can't be good for the belt.
