I seem to be adding 4-6 oz. of oil every 3-400 miles. There is 1700 miles on my xb9s today. The 1st service was done at 900 miles, dealer used dyno, I changed to syn 3 @ 1300 miles, fan runs alot here in az, its been about 90-100 degree rides. I remember adding just a few oz. in 1000 miles on my other HD's. What is everyone else using? I can't find any other posts on this. | ||

I've never had to add oil to my XB other than the regular maintenance changes (2500 miles). I've got 14,500 miles on it now. Are you weeping from around an oil line somewhere perhaps? Bryan | ||

I had to add alittle oil before my 1000 mile service, but after that it didn't use a drop. | ||

No weeps, no smoke, no smell. I wonder if it just wants to settle to that level? When I changed it I added the 2.5 quarts and the level was to top marker after I ran the engine a few minutes. Maybe its hanging up somewhere and not returning to tank. Also, I have alot of trouble finding neutral, does not want to come out of 1st, when it does it jumps into 2nd. This happens 70% of the time, dealer agrees its notchy and offered to take it apart but I thought I'd run it to 2500 to see if it weathers in. The bike was a demo, I demoed it back in june with 650 miles on it and bought it last week with 910 miles. You could not tell it from the unridden xb9sl. I did not want the L because of my heft, afraid of suspension bottoming. | ||

Steelshoe, I had the same problem with neutral but it steadily got better. Now with 8700 miles on the bike it is really "smooth". It is still somewhat of a Harley Tranny. Finding neutral is great and I can speed shift it. Should break in. Morgan | ||

On my bikes if I fill the oil to the prescribed level it will just "disappear". If I keep it near the bottom of the dipstick it never gets any lower. I know a few others who do the same thing with no problems. | ||

I always filled my X1 to the low mark on the dipstick or else it would just "breathe" it out until it reached that level. I've since found the same situation with my XB. As far as the tranny goes, what you have described is a classic symtom of an out of adjustment primary chain tensioner. I'm using synthetic 20/50wt. for primary lubrication, & with the tensioner adjusted properly it falls right into neutral. Hope this helps.  | ||

Steelshoe, Have you looked in your airbox. Mine spits oil into the airbox. On an XB, the airbox will hold a few ounces of oil and you would never know it was there unless you opened the airbox. | ||

On that neutral problem, I switched to Mobil One 75-90W at 300 miles and just changed it again at 1000. Trans is very very smooth now with no neutral issues at all. Try it. One qt, about 7 dollars. | ||

I am running mobil 1 gear oil and I thought about loosening the primary chain a tad although it feels right cold, I think your right apex1. I was also thinking of looking in airbox, better get busy!. Thanks for the replies. Everything else is great on it! |
