damn thats alot of work...if you just want a little noise...just whack the rear section off....cut the inner pipes....weld her back up....i did that to mine pretty easy and a decent sound... | ||

Exhaust companies (OE and aftermarket) spend a small fortne on development of their pipes to ensure that they perform correctly. Unless yu have access to a lot of dyno time, making a home made pipe or hacking an original will invariably result in less performance but more noise. | ||

cheers nxtr that could be a option as still retains the stock hardware other option is going custom made or we have a pipe called supatrapp i have a two bikes with these pipes now but both were carbed bikes one was a 4 stroke xr250 the other was the yammy xv1000 sounded bloody awesome and as they have adjustable rings for different back pressure tunings this could also be a option but would loose chin faring i have seen a tuba buell with one looked good | ||

Ha, reminds me of a guy I used to work with. He had an 80-something Escort piece of crap, and wanted to put a Flowmaster exhaust on it (like it would matter). But, he was dead broke, so he found a cutaway pic of the inside of one, and welded his own together out of scrap metal. It turned out to be a 40-pound steel BOX with a "V" shaped divider welded inside. It was loud as hell, and he swore up and down his car was faster, despite the fact the rear suspension sagged from the weight. Who needs testing? If you want more noise stick a couple baseball cards in the spokes. Don't sacrifice noise for performance by hacking your exhaust apart. I too made that mistake, and now I have a drummer. If it was that easy everybody would be doing it. Sorry, just my 2 cents. | ||

I agree with the folks above - there's so much more to exhaust performance than noise levels and free-flowing-ness. Resonance probably plays a bigger role than backpressure, or a lack thereof. | ||

I would love to have a version of the first generation RR pipe that is designed for the XB 12. Enough flow (and done properly) for 150+ hp without being so loud that it irritates the neighbors. There is growing demand for a high performance pipe that keeps the volume down. I'm all for good tone, but I'd rather not draw un-wanted negative attention to myself, or riders in general. I personally don't want to be mistaken for for a poseur Harley rider by people 3 blocks away. I don't even care for the sound of the race bike with it's rinehart/beson pipe. It is painful at close range, but it does produce HP so...... I just don't get the fascination with loud pipes that are that way for the sake of being loud. I have a Jardine on my bike, and I have kept it because 1)that is what Terry G. and the guys at Hal's tuned it to run with, and 2) there is not an alternative that produced equal power that is quieter. The stock pipe IS too quiet, but there is a lot of room between the two extreme ends of the scale. I'd like a pipe that sounds like the (discontinued) Buell race pipe that flows like a drummer or micron. That would do the trick on the street IMHO. Nice power, linear torque curve, and quiet enough to not destroy the rider's hearing if they forget and leave their ear plugs at home. I'd start saving for the pipe I described today if it existed. Kevin is working on a quieter pipe if rumors are true, and if/when it's unveiled I'm sure that it won't just be me that wants one. unfortunately (for me) Kevin is being kept busy enough with his current product that it may be a while before anything new is rolled out....sigh. I'm sure there will be flames from the "loud pipes save lives" crowd over this post. Alert, prepared riders save their own lives. Loud pipes project sound behind you, where the percentage of threats to the rider is the least. Not to mention the fact that stereos and cell phones are filling the ears of the people that are too distracted to respond to the sound of emergency vehicle sirens, much less your exhaust system. Sorry, but that's how I see it, and there would have to be some serious solid proof to convince me to modify my position. | ||

A long time ago there was a thread with a picture of a race team on the west coast running an Edlebrock car exhaust muffler. They said a FlowMaster would also work. They sound good on a 5.0 Mustang, so why not? | ||

I will be making my XB12 Race Kit available, as I am returning my Long to stock before trading it for the new 1125r. I have the Buell ceramic coated race can (silver), race ECM, and the Buell low restriction air filter. I've used it for about a year and about 12000 miles. I have one of these moded pipes. I bought my bike used and he gave it to me with it for free. I put it on and it does sound good. I actually like the sound better than my special ops. Not sure on the power thing though. I really did not notice a change from the hacked up stock pipe to the special ops. I may put the hacked up one back on for a comparison. stack | ||

I agree with Diablobrian. In fact the lack of decent performance muffler that is not too loud is one of the reasons I am having a break from XB's at the moment such is the strength of this issue for me. | ||

I am considering making an exact replica of my 07 exhaust out of aluminium to drop the weight. The only area that is worrying me is the valve for the midrange. I intend to ceramic coat the inside and outside to make it more durable. Has this been done before? | ||

My wife and I put together a "race muffler" for my buddy Ryan (Frausty12R). Aside from a small torque dip due to being slightly lean at around 4500-5000RPM it actually works quite well. It's only one or two HP down from the same setup with a Drummer SS, and stomps the Drummer off the bottom up to about 3500 RPM. All we did was gut the muffler into a hollow shell, leaving the bulkheads for support, and removing most of the last chamber. I wanted to use a large 2.5" outlet, but Ryan talked me down to using a smaller one...I don't remember exactly what it was. It sounds fierce though it growls, crackles and pops off the gas. The outlet we used points down so it's only loud when you're to the left of the bike. With some EFI tuning I think it'd be even better (though I think he'd prefer a prettier muffler!). | ||

Well...IF anyone is interested? I'm undertaking the "Mod" this weekend. To be CLEAR-I only want a little more music from my Harley inspired powerplant. All my buddies ride loud a$$ HD's, heck even my Dodge truck and everything else prior to it has had its exhaust changed all the way to the duals on my V6 '78 Grand Prix and '75 Celica. Just LOVE the music engines make. If I wanted something fast I'd have gotten an l4. Its about the style. The plan this week end is to remove the rear section, remove the center pipe and put dual outlets. the interactive will still be working although it wont really be doing anything. Later on I'll try custom building a pipe. I've got lots of Ideas!  | ||

Ok All mod is finished. It went as planned and no hitches. I used elements of flow dynamics to provide some backpressure to let the interactive valve still do its job, kept the same length and look as stock and in fact the finished product resembles a race can very closely. NOW FOR THE GOOD STUFF... It SOUNDS INCREDIBLE. I had neighbors come look at it and kids on the street staring as I drove by. The performance is nothing short of fantastic. Low end torque was strong, maybe more than before while midrange stayed about the same and top end was definitely an increase. sure it was all seat of the pants dyno but I can pull throttle wheelies with no problems. The first power run I made I didnt even know I was in a wheelie until I let off to shift (It was dark) Then was able to repeat it at will. I REALLY want to perform the same mod to who ever would like it for about $? + shippingsponsorship, first before advertising. I'll post pictures once I get it painted (Think Race Can). Local Phoenix-Mesa Buellers are welcome to come see and hear it to spread the news. Turn around time will be SHORT, like 2 days.I dont have ANY Spares so I will need yours to make you one.
