Hey all,

Im back to the stock pipe on my XB12 (had the drummer and LOVED it, but my crapface neighbour complained)...anways, heres my thing....

After checking out all the dynos on the boards, and owning a Drummer, no pipe out there seems to give an XB12 owner the low end torque that the stock pipe gives. The Drummer is the closest, but still, that torque punch at low RPM (under 2500 RPM) that comes from the stock pipe utilizing the valve is always is lost with louder pipes. Why cant an aftermarket pipe be built with an operational valve? this way we could keep the low end torque, get the sound, and have the high end...

Anything like that out there?

Jack

Odie's Special Ops pipe retains the valve.
You can find info on it in the Sponsors' section in Stone Mountain's thread.

What I'd like to do, is keep the stock pipe, but find a way to give it a little more - shall we say - pronounced exhaust note. Nothing crazy, just a few more decibels would be nice.

i am running a drummer, and have not noticed a lack of low speed torque. perhaps you changed something else that caused this?

Talk to Odie...he might be able to make a custom pipe for you that's quiet enough, but still louder than stock and still performs.

If Odie can make such a pipe, i would be a customer. I guess I'm getting old, because the Race Pipe I installed is a little on the loud side for my taste.

I like the pipe to have some character, but not so much that the cops here me coming : )

The Special OPS is a bit louder than the race pipe. 5 decibels quieter would be about perfect for me. Sounds like a hot rod.

Garp , once you ride next to a couple Harley's that race pipe will not seem loud anymore.

Jack,

Did you say that your neighbors complained about the noise from the Drummer? So you really are not looking for a louder pipe.

Here's an idea.. take the can off for a couple weeks and just run straight headers. Than they will learn to appreciate what ever pipe you have or get

Joojoo, here is something that just may work for you.

take a look at this pic...

Then...
I have an in-depth idea for both the 12 and 9, but I am currently on the road.

However a quick fix that would work on both the 12 and 9 would be (referencing the above picture) cut off chamber A between the tacked on stainless outlet and the three hole reinforcing plate.

Then weld a U pipe from the first pipe (that exits into chamber A, to the third in chamber A that is perforated in chamber B, and exits in chamber C.)

Then remove the original exit pipe that was attached to the center pipe, and clean up the end so it is flush with the three hole reinforcing plate.

Then elongate the hole in chamber A to match that of the tacked on outlet. (I would slide the stainless outlet through the inside of the elongated hole, tack it then run a smooth bead around the outside. This in my opinion would give it a much better look)

Then weld chamber A back to the muffler body, grind weld, and repaint.

This mod should result in no loss of HP or TQ, and give it a nice low tone at idle and non ear splitting growl when you get on it.

This is nothing more than my own personal theory. But to date I don’t believe it has been tried. Then again I may be wrong.

And this may help to better understand the concept...

V/R,
Nick

Hi Jack,

Their is a XB12 aftermarket silencer that still retains a interactive valve system ( similar to the OE set-up). See the picture below and contact Jens @ HBM for more information/pricing.

Interactive aftermarket silencer

Question....If you do anything to the stock pipe that in any makes it less restrictive ( ie attempt to make it louder ) and retain the valve, ie STOCK ECM, how would it compensate? The race ecm is supposed to allow for the less restrictive air and exhaust, more fuel, but does not work with the interactive valve. Anyone?

The race ECM does not operate the servo that controls the exhaust valve, So you cannot use the race ecm on a pipe that retains the valve, thats why people are using the TFI

My point, so this is easier and more efficient than sliping on a new muffler, K/N, and pluggin in an ECM? W/o a dyno tune, all you are doing w/ the tfi is guessing. jmo

As I understand it, the ECM does not control the exhaust valve. The valve is connected via throttle cable isn't it?

No, the valve is controlled by a signal from the ECM.
