O.k guys here it is. The '97 S1 is up for sell. I can get a good deal on a CBR929 RR.
Heres what i need your help with. I need to know if the Lightning Or Firebolt has enough room for two up riding. Im 200lbs 6' the wife is 120lbs 5'3". I need a bike that can fit us both on their easily. Now we won't be doing thousands of miles at a time. But it does need to be alittle comfortable for the wife. It'll save me headaches from the wife complaining. Second thing is is the 9's the same as the 12's or are the 12's longer. And can the 9's haul two people.

Just to help answer your ?'s. I'm 235 6'1" wife is 105 5'0" and it works for us. I have an XB9R. The 9 and the 12 are the same size. Do your wife a favor though and get the Firebolt Touring Pillion part number 53095-02Y

Better yet buy her a Blast of her own...Then both are very comfortable in the riding position....

+1 on the Touring seat, My wife don't ride her own either...<sigh>

I try hard to push it though!

My gf likes the lighting (XB) tail better than the firebolt tail. I have a 9 that hauls us just fine, and our added weight is more than yours. She doesn't like riding on my S1 much either.

Larger Rider + the missus = XB12Ss, the long wheelbase model.

Longer seat, more stable. Really should be the Standard Buell in my opinion.

+1 on what Gj said. You might also consider the uly. 2up on a R or S, is not comfortable.

Demo the ULY, you are tall enough to clear the "must be this tall to ride this bike" marker and it has the most comfortable two up seat in the Buell family. Just because it says "adventure" riding doesnt mean it is only an offroad bike. I would wager that most riders spend more of their time on pavement.

Obviously you like tubers, you've got an S1, one of the, if not THE most Buelltiful bikes ever created.
Stick with the tubers and look for a used S3. Lots of room, good power, good handling, and saddlebags that will actually hold stuff...

A wife on back of an XB??? not for long... I am 5'9" 135 pounds, wife is a short 107LB wet. She will ride across town for lunch on back, but any more than ten minutes and she wants to ride her own bike. For pillion passengers I think you want a little longer bike than an XB. maybe a ULY? havent tried one myself, but looks suitable.

Heck, a Firebolt's not even comfortable for one person, let alone two! The Ss is pretty good, but being 6' myself, I prefer to slide back a bit, and there's not much left for anyone else.

The Uly would be your best bet. It's seat is a decent bit longer, and darn comfy the few times I've sat on one. AND its got that cool built in convertible backrest/cargo shelf.

The XB9 and XB12 are both the same size, and the XB9 definitely has enough motor to haul two people. That said, the XB12 motor has a lot more low end and is better suited to carrying extra weight.

The Lightnings have better ergonomics for the rider, but shorter tail means less room for the passenger. The Firebolt has a longer tail which will leave more room between the two of you and gives your passenger a little more legroom. Either model will need a new seat if you plan on carrying your passenger any further than across town (except XB12X and XB12SS). I've got the Buell touring pillion on my '04 XB12R and my wife has gone along on numerous ~200 mile day trips with minimal complaint. A few weekends ago we rode ~400 miles to the mountains and back, but my wife was pretty sore by the time we got home.

If your looking for 2 up comfort the RR is not a nice choice.

But the 'bolt actually has more passenger room than a standard Lightning. But if you want some more passenger comfort go with the Ss.

I'm 220 myself and the wife is just as much, I have a XB12Ss and I seriously suggest getting the touring seat, gives her MUCH more room. We have no problem riding around town, the stock seat is horrible. with her or with a friend who weighs 120 wet they both slide into me during normal riding, the touring seat is ALOT more comfortable for the passenger, plus I think it makes the bike look better.

Corbin also sells the Gunfight + Lady for the XB12Ss, which incorporates a removable backrest (sissy bar) for her.

I'm thinking about getting that so she doesn't lean against my back and makes my wrists more comfortable during long rides.
