I have to admit if Skyguy really leaves it will be a loss for us all.

He provided humor to the group. Even if it was by antagonizing some members.

For those of you that subscribe to motorcycle.com you know of a user "kpaul"

Well skyguy is our kpaul...

I agree... Skyguy has provided Ft Bstrd many opportunities to entertain us all. If Skyguy leaves I'll have to start watching daytime TV or something.

DAMN, we need to rename this thread: "Now My Eyeballs Are Melting" WTF gave you the idea that I needed to see a naked David Hasselhoff performing beastiality. I'm going to bed soon and that WAS NOT the last image I needed to have. I have a hard enough time sleeping these days anyway.

Bstrd: Go to bed and repent for what you've done.

Remember the scene in Raiders of the lost Ark where the opened the Ark and the guy's
face melted? I had a similar incident right here when I scrolled down to that pic.

F_B: that was totally un-called for! It will haunt me every time I see one of those
puppies! Fortunately for me there aren't many of them around here.

1. The headlight housings on the R models are unsafe.
2. I almost killed myself once because of it.
3. I don't think it's a laughing matter.
4. All Firebolt owners should file a complaint with the NHTSA before the same thing happens to them.
5. I use Hella 90mm units now.
6. I can't believe Buell is still putting these housings on new bikes.
7. I love my Buell.

Earlier I read this post:
"For about 1/2 the cost of a new pipe you could have a safer headlight.

That's a great suggestion, but I wonder why it would become the responsibility of the consumer to bring the level of safety up to an acceptable level."

I couldn't agree more. I have had to pay for belt upgrades, new belt systems, and now a chain conversion. I have also had my bike out of commission for two months because all of the tranny bearings were ruined by water getting in through the clutch cable adjuster. This one cost me a lot of money and time. This is rookie QC and design engineer stuff that is costing the consumer way too much.

Hmmm, water in the clutch cable adjuster going into the primary? Maybe I shouldn't be using the garden hose sprayer to knock bugs off the front of my engine before I do a wash job, huh. Thanks.

I don't know what years were affected after 2003, but make sure the rubber boot on the clutch cable adjuster is sealed at the top. If not, simply use a zip tie to close up the top of the boot. Otherwise don't ride in the rain or wash your bike.

You'll know if water got in because when you change the tranny oil it will look milky.

I am glad to see that Skyguy is heading to the Honda side of the street...I would hate for people to see him "champaigning" and "hot air ballooning" and then get on a Buell.

By the way "arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics...it doesn't matter if you win or lose, you have to be retarded to be involved"
And I apologize to anyone who knows someone in the special olympics by comparing them to nitwits on the net.

2003 models seem to have more issues than later models. That's part of advancement in the development cycle. That's part of owning a first year model.

If you buy one used, be prepared to have issues that are resolved in later models. I personally wouldn't buy a 2003 model XB.

Ever. (I have donned my 2003 model fan flame suit, so scorch away. I have many more pictures of David Hasselhoff and I know how to use them!).

I have a first year Uly. There are issues that are resolved in the 07 that occurred in the 06. This is the nature of the development cycle.

R models have crappy headlights. Sorry. You bought one. You must deal with any issues that result. It is an issue that is part of the design that will not be addressed in this life or any other.

Should you have to deal with it? No. But deal with it you must as long as you are an owner. If you have to spend $120 bucks every two-three years to replace the reflectors, that is part of the ownership of an R.

I hate to bring this back to seriousness after David Hasselhoff and all, but this thread was dead at birth.

MELTED HEADLIGHTS ON R MODELS IS NOT NEWS!

More than likely, I will be replacing fans for the life of my bike. I will have to make the decision as to whether fan replacements are worth my continued ownership. If not, I will sell the bike.

You have to decide if the headlight issue is enough of a hassle (or enough of a safety issue) for you to end your ownership or if you are willing to deal with it as a part of ongoing ownership.

I will now go back to researching creepy pictures of Ernest Borgnine!

My primary fluid is in fact always milky. I always wondered where the water was coming from. I just figured it was condensation. It's probably a good thing I change the primary fluid every 1000 miles. I feel a little dopey considering I've probably been blowing water into the primary with the garden hose all this time.

"My primary fluid is in fact always milky."

That's not a good thing, to say the least. I'd flush it with an extra change or two after sealing the adjuster boot.

I paid someone to split the cases just to change the drive gear bearing, the only tranny bearing that you can see. It was orange with rust.

Then it turns out every bearing in my tranny is bad, not completely shot, but all have rough spots. They charged me 4 hours labor to split the cases instead of 2.5, after I'd stripped everything else. I'd have done it myself If I'd known how much was bad in there. I could have bought my own press for that much dough and done it at home.

All because of that cable design.

I hope someone comes here to look after all the B.S in this thread.

I bought skyguys XB9R. On first look, there is no low beam 12 volt to the plug behind the headlights, both reflectors are chromeless, both bulb holders, and spring retainers are heat damaged, and both new bulbs are blown.

I suspect the intermittent 12v line to the low beam caused voltage spikes which burned out his flasher relays and speed sensors, as they are on the same +12 volt supply line. We'll never know, huh?

And skyguy? He's a fun, cool guy who just wants to ride a Honda for miles and trouble free carefree miles.

Me? After British bikes in the 60's and years on an S2, I enjoy nearly all aspects of a Buell, especially the XB series.

Do I think Buell should replace the headlights and the oil pump drive gear like H-D replaced the Twin Cam cam bearings? IMHO, absolutely! And that would lift Buell up to another level of responsibility and reliability and customer satisfaction.

I agree with the above.

I rode with Japanese sportbike groups every weekend for about 5 years in California, generally about 250 miles per day.

I cannot remember a single bike having a mechainical failure that stranded the rider. NOT ONCE!

When you expect that kind of bullet proof experience, the many ideosyncracies are tough to stomach.

The belt breakage problems may be on a minority of bikes, but absolutely unacceptable. In the 21st century you just can't put out product that strands people on the side of the road, especially when it is a drive system that bucks the common wisdom of the industry.

I'm not saying Japanese bikes are perfect, and there are certainly mechaincal failures with all manufacturs. However, there are many of us that had PERFECT reliability with Japanese motorcycles, then had issues when we switched to Buells. Could it be a coincidence? Sure. However, I've had at least 15 trouble free bikes from Japan, all but one bought used, and two Buells that had significant issues. We can only go by our own experience, and it sounds like Skyguys has been similar to mine.

We all have different levels of emotionality in our responses to disappointments, and Skyguy did push many people's buttons. But it is hard to fault him for being upset.

I am making the same mistake with this post. I think that on this forum you tend to be villainized for questioning Buell greatness in any way. I just am finally frustrated enough to care a bit less.

Oooops!

I forgot the most important aspect of the situation.

And that is - any of these problems are repairable with a bit of constructive time and effort.

Perhaps with less constructive repair time than is spent on this board complaining, the problems could be gone forever.

Buells are like a marriage. They're very rewarding, but don't run on automatic. They take a little personal effort.

Metrics are more like speed dating.

Steve,

I agree completely. I think it comes down to whether you want to just put in gas and ride, or to have a real relationship with your machine.

I love my Buell and would rather ride it than anything else, but I'm not sure if I have the time or desire for marriage counceling right now.

Hi Steve, I had light to the left hand (high beam) and noticed that it had a ground issue due to the melted plastic and heat damaged spring clips. It was flickering on the last ride. I guess I should not have listened to the dealer when it came time to upgrage the lights. The upgrade was pre badweb for me and had I known I would have done the 90mm Hella upgrade rather than the 80 dollar a pair PIAA's

Steve, I just replaced the turn signal relay and had less than 30 miles on it. I hope it is a simple ground short caused by the bulb bouncing around on the way home from the last ride. I will get the manual (and parts book and extra wheel bearings) mailed out to you tomorrow. I may even have the stock bulbs for the headlights if those are blown.

Got to say I am all smiles (: Steve sold me a MZ660 with touring bags and it is a hoot to ride! Feels like a 125 but with pilot powers (: Thanks again Steve. That little bike ain't fast but it can carry a tidy little entrance speed (: Held a steady 70mph up the 18hwy. In fact, I do not know if I have ever had a less powerful bike. and I am still having fun!

Nearly as good as the Buell in the twisties. Of course the streets only let you go so fast without being downright stupid so it is not a fair comparison.

I know I said I would probally flip it sooner or later but am having a hard time coming up with a reason not to keep it. Perfect commuter bike. By keeping it I could justify a Duck for our Wed rides.................

I hope the Buell issue is an easy fix let me know if I can be of any other help. Other than that let me know what your schedule is like and I will take you up on a Wed ride. with the boys with badges................
