I've tried to digest all there is on this board concerning exhaust modifications over the course of the last three months. I've come to a few conclusions.

1) Pipes are EXPENSIVE! No way can I afford the six bills for the D&D (four for the Drummer and Jardine), another two for the ECM, plus 60 for the filter... In addition to my payment, insurance, etc.

2) People are very biased toward what they have spent their own money on. This is understandable. Objectivity is hard to come by.

3) All of the exhaust configs. must give up something to gain somewhere else...ie. less low end grunt for sound, or more top end, etc.

4) There is not enough information available on what can be done to stock cans to make them louder, perform better.

Perhaps I am just not looking in the right places to satisfy my need to know, but it appears to me that the best all around pipe is the stock one. I do not want to anyone off here, but why waste so much $$$ if you're not gaining performance. I refuse to plunk down a grand just so my CityX sounds a little louder.

For someone who simply wants more sound from the stock system and is pleased with the performance right out of the box, there should be more info on what can be done to the stock exhaust to achieve the desired grumble (IMHO).

I've heard that one can simply drill holes in the inner exhaust tip. Is this recommended or will it cause long term problems? What else can I do to get some more sound without starving my wife and kids? Any input is appreciated. THX.

You could pull the muffler off and just run with a header...

J/K... They seem to foul plugs when you do that.

IMO...

The stock header seems to be VERY capable.

The two cans that seem to be the best from what I've found are the Drummer and the D&D. The Drummer seems to have more at the bottom and top, the D&D has a little more in the middle.

Quite frankly though... If you aren't interested in spending a good deal of money for a Drummer/D&D and a PCIII with a dyno tune I'd just leave it stock. Personally I always liked the way mine sounded when stock...

Too bad the only aftermarket that keeps the cool valve is loud as a train. I want something smaller, lighter, and deeper, but not at the expense of a torque hole... Flat=predictable=smooth=Fast!

Dagwood, for the most part, I agree with your observation. However, some riders like the louder pipes and some riders need louder pipes to help keep them from getting run over. No one can seriously say that the performance gains alone are worth the price tag. If our bikes had a turbo charger, it would be a different story because the reduction of back pressure would aid in faster spool up. The stock pipe is well tuned for quiet, middle of the road performance.

I've had the force, d&d, stock and race can. There are things in each I like so it's hard to say which one is the BEST. Best sound is the force. Best sound least effort, d&d. best sound cheap, race can. best sound for leaving for work 5am, stock. force looks best. force cost most.
d&d is best for the low end 3000 and below. Force rules above 3000. d&d was totally plug and play with the race ecm. the force required a lot of tuning. I'd like to try out a drummer and the tiforce and maybe some from hillbilly. I guess you just got to try them all.

If I rode in town traffic all the time (street light to street light 30 mph or less speed limit) I'd want a really loud pipe so the cages could hear me before they see me. Or in most cases not see me. On the backroads where I ride & on the freeways I don't think a loud pipe is really of any safety benefit. At higher speeds they usually don't hear you till you're right along side them & then they usually get startled and do dumb things. My sporty was loud & safe in town but on the freeway I was still invisible. All said, I'm really loving having a quiet bike.

i run stock .. sounds good to me .. i ride it like a race bike .. all hard acceleration & hard braking .. ppl hear THAT! ; )

also, my ex told me i ruined her conversation while driving her new suv w/ window down coz of stock noise at 50kmh (32mph), so it can't be TOO quiet!

and, the facking cagers will kill u anyway if they want, as there cars are soundproofed beyond belief & they have their stereos, conversations, daydreaming & cellphones to worry abt!

just ride hard, live in healthy fear & keep yer eyes open.

the buell sounds great being thrashed & it helps stop getting caught up in the HARLEY thing!

paul.

Although I like the sound of a well tuned engine as much as anyone, I tend to ride quiet bikes. My Buell runs the stock can. Truthfully, it's much better PR for bikers to run quiet bikes. I've been riding a long time and have never bought into the "loud pipes save lives" crap. The reality is that we can chose to restrain ourselves or be restrained by law enforcement and legislation. Good luck beating the system guys.

Run stock, save the money for protection such as a good helmet, gloves, boots etc. That is your best way to stay safe. Just my 2 cents.

I run stock.

Bike works great as is. Sounds great and unique. Looks great... and unique. Gets stares and comments as is.

I prefer the twisties, where fast is more about skill and suspension settings....

The money spent on my bike is for fluids, good tires and comfort.... Like a good seat, Double Bubble, Heli Bars, CRG Levers, and S model foot pegs... This way I get to ride the bike more, which for me, is what it is all about

Dan,

The easiest way to make the stock pipe louder and not lose a lot of bottom end power is as follows.

1. Take the pipe off the bike.

2. Drill a 1 inch hole in the center of back of the pipe, where it faces the rear tire. After you drill that hole, you will be able to see a cross over pipe. You can then drill a 1 inch hole in that crossover pipe. This will allow some of the exhaust flow to exit directly out the outlet. Have a muffler shop weld a patch over the hole you drilled in the outer pipe.

This will give you quite a bit more sound, and not kill the bottom end like cutting the crossover pipe out all the way.

Now a couple of notes:

1. The pipe will not sound as good as a jardine, drummer, latus, etc. It will have a higher pitched sound. It will also not be as loud as the ones mentioned.

2. Do not drill anywhere but the back of pipe. Much of the stock pipe is dual wall steel and can be a pain to weld back up properly. The back of the pipe is relatively thick steel and can be welded easily.

3. In case you are wondering, I have actually done this to a stock pipe. I still like my jardine better.

LOL... Us ^55clown American's MADE this cool bike.

The frame is made in ITALY !

ok so it takes 2 hours of labor for 400 dollars.
so you charging 200 dollars and hour labor?
to unweld, rip some guts, reweld, sandblast,
and paint with .99 cent high temp paint.

and then the bike sputters and has worse
power/torque ratings then stock !

I'm not impressed with snake-oil pipe gutter-outters.

ANY body i repeat ANYBODY can do what mr drummer
does if they got the tools !

charge 800 and you will still get suckers to
buy dang take off pipes from ebay for a hundred
and then spend 800 on the guitarist brand gutted
pipe which is NOTHING more then what i said it
was... they been punching holes in stock harley
pipes since day one ! nothing new.

bet, best and challenges are for what?
to prove what? you are better then ME?
because you spent this or that or have
200 dbs (decibels) pipe and i have 80 dbs...
so you are better then me? ha ha ha

yea you are better then me because you charged
400 DOLLARS TO many people for 2 hours labor
so they can BRAG about the dang loudness?
and 1 pony more at whatever rpm?
or 5 ponies or whatever?
and they don't even run em on the street at
at rpm anyhow... so how they gonna get that 5 ponies?

... and they dont even get a NEW
pipe out of the deal they get the stock can.

snake-oil salesmen !

hmmmm... so you are smarter then me for spending 400 dollars on a SERVICE that you will not get your money back on?
to spend more and more money on something that
they will never recoop the cost from. But I'm the
stupid one right?

find run your loud buell and i will run my quiet
one. you want loud and fast buy a dang busa !
and run a yosh pipe or kerker whatever.
you want QUIET and FUEL efficient run
a stock buell and watch your mileage hit 60's miles per gallon.

you want bets and challenges???????

I BET a stock buell gets BETTER AND BEST FUEL
EFFICIENCY over drummer, or guitarist, or
harmonica brand gutted buell stock pipes !!!!!!!

I bet and I WIN.

you want ponies per dollar
buy a dang stock busa for 3 grand more then a
buell and you got all the ponies you need.

You can't buy this kind of entertainment! It takes a special person to provide it.

I say cut open the stock can yourself and make your own mods. The worse thing that can happen is you'll have to get another one and start over. You get to have the fun of trying something yourself.
