Are there any differences in engine performance when comparing a stock '03xb9s vs '05 xb9sx? I understand there are obvious upgrades to the bodywork, but I am trying to figure out if there is that much difference in performance/reliability between the two models.

If I am not mistaken, the front forks are bigger on the 05. Not a engine spec difference, but still a potential difference in the handling of the bike. Someone who owns the 05 can confirm this...

Powertrains should be identical. XB9SX benefits from the drive belt upgrade, shorter belt guards and a more heavily padded seat, plus the Pirelli tires. Everything else is cosmetic.

The forks are larger diameter....makes a difference if you ride the corners hard, also, the 05 has the 12 airbox on it.

There are also subtle differences in the fuel injection system (maps, throttle body) that I doubt would show up on a dyno. As NJBuell said, the 9sx gets the inner airbox cover with the nipple though, which *DOES* show up on a dyno.

Not day and night though. But the 9sx is a really nice all around package.

Forks are larger diameter...they are now 43mm to stop torsional flex. also, the ecm is different, dont know why, probably to compensate for the larger airbox.

I really wanted to test ride a CityX at the demoday a few weeks ago but ran out of time. I really wanted to see if I could feel the difference between the Pirelli tires and Dunlops. If you stick a CityX next to a regular XB you can clearly see the different profiles of the two tires. The Pirelli is noticably taller and thinner and the dunlop is shorter and fatter. I wonder if I could feel though, usually not good at picking things up like that.

I am not sure about the "Special" Dunlops for the XBs, but I had the 208s on a CBR600RR and I have to say, I like the Pirelli's alot better.
That and I like my CityX alot better too
: )

Everyone covered the other differences but I would like to add that the belt upgrade is pretty significant

Eric... You would notice in 30 feet : ). It's really a huge difference. I haven't ridden w/ the Scorpion Syncs yet, but I have ridden with Sportec M1's (which seem to be the same profile). The bike feels a lot more stable, the standing under braking is all but removed and is a lot easier to use by releasing the brakes to drop into a corner. With the Dunlops the bike was almost impossible to safely roll in slightly (to stay to the outside of a left hand corner until you can see all the way through) and would just plain drop once you let off the slight brake pressure. With the Sportecs it's still a tool, but can actually be used. You aren't trying so hard to keep it leaned so when you ease the brakes off it doesn't drop in hard. Also... The rear tire with the Dunlops never gave me any confidence at all, so I gave up rear braking all together with those.

I've never tried Battletrax though... The Dunlops may be the hot ticket for that but I would have to try it before I believed it.
