So I will be racing for the first time in my 60s this Sunday. If you are in the So Cal area, and would like to have a birthday burger, come on out the Moto west GP Round 2 at Willow Springs Intl. Raceway and watch the old guy try to go fast.

Tear 'em up Rob.

I'm right behind you...
58 isn't painless by any means but it's better than I thought it would be... 30 years ago.

Have fun, ride fast and go home in one piece.

...just turned 60 myself (usually race with AHRMA next weekend..."mature" men with "In-mature" bikes) - check and double check the equipment, here's hoping it's not TOO windy...remember, "patience is the companion of wisdom" - let the race come to you...good luck and Happy 60th!

60 is the new...well, probably not ANYTHING new! Seems like a lot of us are as old as the Corvette and Maypo. I make the leap in May and envy you guys that are hitting the track.

Good luck to all, be safe and have fun. I'll be living vicariously through you guys!

I did OK considering I was sick as a dog Friday night and got no sleep so could not practice Saturday.
That being said, I got 1 3rd 2 4ths. I cost myself 3rd place in the Formula Twins Heavyweight race when I missed the white flag, though I'm still not convinced it was shown. I was just about to pull the trigger on the Duc in front of me when we got the checkered. I saw the crossed, but no white.
It was very windy by mid day and coming out of the bowl onto the back straight was very unpredictable.
But it was a great day with great friends and I and the bike are in one piece; so sore I can barely walk, but that will pass. Until next time...

Damn Rob! And you are racing Expert and getting up that far in the results? When are you going to be in the AMA?

I had a really good race weekend overall, too. Although I had a mechanical in the Team-60 (2-bike, 2 rider, 1-hour sprint format), I managed a 6th in SSA, a 9th in SBB, and a Win in Heavyweight Twins.

The CMRA is outrageously competitive, so I'm actually very proud of that 6th and 9th. HWT was a lot of fun, but it's not nearly as competitive as the inline production classes, so I'm getting lucky. I am chasing the championship in it, however!

Just goes to show the adage is true: Age is just a number.

Planning to start racing this year at 47 and hope I'm still racing at 60.

I started racing at 51. This year, those USBA monkeys bumped me to Expert because I finished last season 2nd in Supertwins and 5th in Novice GTO (largely because my fellow competitors didn't show up for all the races) - and truth be told, I'm not overly thrilled about it. I'll be OK as backmarker in the USBA series, but am NOT looking forward to getting thoroughly pasted when the WERA boys (and girls) come to town in July.

Slow and steady may not win the race, but at least you finish right side up.

CCS gave me the expert bump a couple years ago, and I petitioned to remain an Am.
Might be a possibility for you too?

Jeff,

Protest if your times are way off the mark in Expert. The point is to have someone to race, not be all alone at the back.

Clubs are usually pretty understanding about that.

Thanks JD and 99. The USBA board are a pretty good bunch of dudes. I did yammer on a bit about lap times, blah blah, and I can petition, but they thought I should bump and that I'll be fine... a comment I got was "now that you have to chase the fast guys, I think you'll see your lap times come down" - I certainly welcome that scenario.

My goals remain the same as when I started: Improve every time I go out, finish in an upright position, and don't cause problems for the faster guys. It's the last one that gives me pause. On the plus side, with my skippy white tags, I'm sure to get the hot chicks like the real racers do - I'll keep you posted on how that goes.

And Props to Rob - dude, you're fast. I just hope I can hang for a few more years and represent the Geritol class.

Slower riders never cause problems for the fast guys -- they get right around them.

I've done a couple of days of Expert practice, and I'm always shocked at how clean and sane it is compared to Novice.

Unless something goes wrong, I'll get promoted after this season. Most of my fellow racers I hang with already have, and you can see their times and skills improving every race. Like you, I want some of that, too.

You going to make it to Hallett? If you have an expert license card we won't get to race together. I might be able to pull some strings, though. (might)

Of course, you could grid Expert and then I could pick you off from the second wave : )

Still planning on it - my WERA card says Novice, so not sure how that plays into the whole deal. I WILL have to race Expert for the WERA weekend here.

"Of course, you could grid Expert and then I could pick you off from the second wave"

Entirely likely, my friend. Hopefully I can hold you off for a couple of laps.

Damn Rob! And you are racing Expert and getting up that far in the results? When are you going to be in the AMA?

I am still way off an AMA pace. "Aussie" Dave Anthony was beating me by a good 5-6 seconds a lap so I have a long way to go.
That being said, by the last race I was finally starting to gain real confidence in the bike and tires. I switched to Bridgestone from Dunlop to see what the difference was and I have to say that I really started liking the Bridgestones; especially the front. I had medium compounds on, which were good for the big track, but not so much for the small "Streets of Willow" track on Sunday. I switched to softs for the races, but had no practice time and I even missed the warmup lap in the first race, which made them a little slippery, so I was tentative. By the last race however, I was realizing that I had a lot of traction left and on the last lap I was closing in on the third place guy at a pretty good clip.

The 1190RS is an awesome ride, but it is a lot harder on my stiff old back and knees that the 1125R. The more aggressive riding position, harder acceleration and braking, push my limits. In some situations I am still faster on the 1125R than the 1190RS. A new kid from Australia named Jake Dolan on a pretty much bone stock 1125R, kicked my ass due to his willingness to just defy the laws of physics in the corners, proving once again that a great rider on a good bike will beat a good rider on a great bike, every time. I'm hoping with more seat and track time I can ride the bike close to it's potential.
