Jon from Highwayphotos.net put this shot together from my recent pre-race 1190RS road test on Mullholland Hwy near Malibu CA. Pretty cool I think.

Hey Rob,

So, I know you are in California. But, what's it going to take for us to end up on the same track, and on the same grid together.

I want a piece of that 1190. Oh, and you, too.

Let's get it on.

: )

Watch out Jim, there's 4 of Rob...

I'm amazed at how good photo-stitching software has gotten.

Oh, he's going to mop the track with my ass. But, it would still be a ton of fun.

You know, the CMRA is racing NOLA this year, and I've been talking to Jeff here about racing that weekend. Maybe we can get Rob there and have a little Buell-off and settle this score once and for all?

Oh, he's going to mop the track with my ass.
Oh I highly doubt that. (+40Hp/BS factor(2) )-20yrs=0, but I do love racing with fellow Buellers. It would be a blast.
I'm headed to WERA West round one at the AAA speedway this weekend. I'm anxious to see how it goes, cause right now this thing is scaring the piss outa me. Sooooo much speed into the corners.
I would love to get out to distant tracks, but I'm struggling to keep myself in tires and fuel. But hey, you never know.
So I accept! (pending time and money)

The CMRA is racing at New Orleans June 14-16. We have never raced on this track before as a club.

Your WERA license will work in our club just fine.

If I can talk Jeff into getting down here this summer, that would be 3 EBRs on the grid! 2 are DSB-Spec 1125r models built by EBR, and your 1190RS.

Do you race expert or Novice? Seems like I remember you getting promoted?

I am now in the expert class. That does not necessarily mean I am expert in all situations. Right now I am really struggling with getting secure with sliding the bike. I've reached a point where I won't go much faster until I am good with the bike moving around more.
My goal is to get my pro license by the end of my 60th year, which starts in April. Not that I would ever race pro, but I just want to say that I did it.

It will be tough to actually get to race head-to-head since I'm in the novice class, but we can definitely have a good time.

As for sliding the bike... eh, I told you I was going to get mopped. The only sliding I've done effectively is into the run-off on my ass.

Looks Good Rob. Once you get the feel for sliding around you ll never go back. Danny Eslick can slide a bike like no one else.
We need more video of you racing !

Yeah to date my slides have pretty much been disaster as well. I'd be happy to be able to square it up a little on entry, to stand it up a bit earlier on exit. The really fast guys just seem to dirt track the bike when needed. Iv'e been on the track with Shaw when he's driven around the outside of me, crossed up, rear wheel spinnin'. At least my tires last longer. And then there's that braking part...
I am no where near Eslick's league. I think he uses Jedi mind tricks on that bike.

Check some old races of Garry McCoy. That guy rode a gp bike like a flat tracker.

I can leave darkies on exits if I'm on a street tire, but the race rubber just hooks up and lifts the front wheel. That, of course, scares me and I trail off on the gas like a pussy, ruining the drive.

I'm actually trading a couple of track days this year for wheelie lessons from one of the local squids that's interested in getting into track. Hopefully I can get used to that set of sensations.

The fast guys around here use the rear wheel slide (and sometimes front) on the front brake to get the bike pointed correctly going into the corner. That way, when they trail off the front brake the rear can hook up and the bike is already pointed the right direction to mash the throttle.

It's exciting to watch when they pass you going into a corner!

Rob...
slidin
a) get a small dirt bike and gear
b) get some traffic cones
c) go to El Mirage in the summer time and set up a short track - practice your slidin - learned on an Ace 100 on an old baseball diamond
d) or go to the Colin Edwards camp in Texas
JD - Wheelies
a) find a big hill
b) practice wheeling down the hill
c) learn how to use the back brake to modulate the wheelie
Rod be careful this weekend at Fontana the weather will not be your friend - difficult to hold heat in the tires and brakes - it's gonna snow in the mountains - and the winds of January will be a blowin'...you've had enough adventures in "good" weather

Yeah I've been looking at the CE camp in Texas. Pricey but I'm sure worth it.
Love the El Mirage idea. Sounds like a plan.

KDX-200 or KDX-220 is great fun and bulletproof if you can find one for $1k or less... just replace the piston every few seasons and ride ride ride. Don't know if CA has laws that make older two strokes a problem or not.

Some of the used KTMS are getting really attractive in the $2000 to $3000 price range as well. More expensive to maintain, and can be a freaking nightmare without electric start (just shoot me kind of experience), but they are stupid fun.

Jdug and Rob

We have Aaron Stevenson's Cornerspin in these parts which is similar to CE Boot Camp. Without a doubt it is the BEST investment I have made to improve my riding. Slides are no longer pucker moments. I love sliding the rear around turns. Front slides still leave darkies in my shorts but it doesn't scare me nearly as much as it used to. With that said, I don;t intentionally slide the front...yet. In fact, I'm going back this weekend for the 2nd level of Cornerspin and can't wait.

IMHO participating in a Dirt School is worth giving up a race weekend or trackday.

I can't count how many times my old dirt bike skills saved myass on pavement.

Been a long time since I thought about my old 450 Maico and those miles of clay fire roads that used to be around here. That thing was made to slide. Damn, I can smell the castor. Whhoooooppppp!!! whhhooopppp!! Bwanggggg bwannnggg!!!

Yeah I've looked at Cornerspin as well. Glad to hear you think its worth it. Thanks.
I have no intention of taking up dirt riding as the race track has already ruined my life and I don't need something else to drive me into further ruin.
But I would get a low cost dirt bike just to slide around on for a while.

...it's always more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow - the shorter the swing arm the easier it is to slide and wheelie - a small fourstroke (Xr75) but you have to have enough momentum to slide it thru the corner - straight away speed may need bigger displacement if you're a "bigger" guy in order to build momentum.
...sorry to hear about the weekend - but as you know living here in MC paradise there's always next weekend...wishing you the best of luck Rob for next time.

To learn how to slide, you don't need (or want) a full-size dirt bike. An XR100 is all you need. Not too small, not too large.

We used to slide an xr75 and a ke100 around a horse track when I was early teenager. Never had so much fun.
