Hey everyone. I used to have an 1125 CR, which I loved. The one I had had various issues that eventually lead to a dealer buy-back last April.

I've been searching for a replacement bike since then and haven't had much luck. I was looking for a Triumph Speed Tripe, but those are proving difficult to locate around here in the price I want to be at.

Fast forward to today: I was searching the area's dealers and happened upon a 2009 1125 CR with 3,xxx miles. Part of me wants to rush out and buy it, but my more rational parts want to avoid it based on the experience I had with my previous CR.

So I guess my question is; do you guys think I should give the CR another chance? Are they generally reliable, or am I setting myself up for trouble again?

I was fortunate with my first CR in that it was offered with an extended warranty through HD, so while it was in the shop quite a bit, it didn't end up costing me much at all (still too much for the hassle it put me through). This new CR won't have that option as it's coming from a non-HD dealer.

Buy it. Fix the known issues. Ride it.

I say get it! Nowhere will you find a bike that has 120rwhp and 70 ftlbs of torque and be under 5k. Also the CR does have a lot of quirks, but once you get those sorted out you will have an awesome bike. EBR has a stator fix should yours happen to go out and the dealer network while not great, does provide support.

Also you will never be confused for a GXR or anything "cookie cutter" like, and can you hear the V-Twin roaring down the street? Again, I say get it!!!

You can get a LOT more than that, 140+ hp and 80+ ft/lbs with an ecm and pipe.

If you're the type to cry about how the turn signals quit working, then keep looking.

If you're the type that sees the stock turn signals dieing as a reason to buy aftermarket, then this is your bike.

Wow.

People are only getting 120 out of their CR's?

My bike (09 CR): green, new bike / PDI dyno.
Blue, after 620 service and break-in.
Red, same day as 620 service, after installing updated flash.

All bone stock, still bone stock and going stronger than hell at a tic over 5k miles.

A shop in Houston is listing what is supposed to be a new 09 CR in red, FYI.

If you didn't love the last one, why would you want another? My wife gives me hell all the time about being obsessed, or something like that... I wasn't listening. Hahaha. I love mine. Wouldn't sell it for the world!!! I may be a little impartial though...
Oh yeah, my bike turned the drum to 135 HP, 76 FTLB. Didn't take too much to get it there. And I think I got lucky with mine, been 97% reliable. Good enough for me!!

Mine is a lot of fun and I'm overall very happy with it (2009 1125CR). I had a new cluster installed due to flickering and the new one does the same thing - its really not a big deal and I'm not worried about it. I just got a new ECM (dealer said communication error but I never noticed any problems) and the bike runs great. It definitely puts a smile on my face. I would take it if I were you but there's never a guarantee with anything that it will be trouble-free.

Buy a cheap UJM to get by on and save your dollars for EBR's first nekkid bike!

I did love the CR when I had it, or I should say, when it was running...

The rear signals went out on mine, but that didn't bother me, just replaced them with aftermarket and kept riding. The throttle got sticky on mine and I just removed the throttle tube, checked everything, lubed it and kept riding. The smaller things don't bother me much.

What did bother me about mine was that it had fuel delivery problems and would die out of the blue. That's the only reason I took it into the dealer, and two different shops had it in at least 6 times and couldn't fix the problem. That's why HD decided to buy it back.

My biggest thing is; I just want to ride and not worry about whether or not the bike will get me home.

The CR always put a smile on my face when she ran.

The same dealer that has the CR also has a couple of XB12R's. Are those inherently more reliable than CRs?

Would you consider an 08 R?

The XB12R's are more reliable from your standpoint unless they've been beat on, high mileage/old. '06 and newer is best. You still have to know the common issues. Once you do, they are very easy to work on and don't have any inherent problems. Buell fixed all the flaws from late '06 and on.

Having said that, unless the 1125R/CR was abused or has an internal engine problem (rare), once all the recalls and known issues for its particular year have been rectified, it is just as reliable as the late model XB's. You just have to know what the recalls were and known issues for the model year 1125, and have those rectified right away.

I would not hesitate to buy and XB12R. Just remember that an XB12R is NOT an 1125. They won't even feel similar. They will share the same braking system so that may feel familiar.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Is there someone on the board who can check a VIN for me to see service history / status of recalls?

Called the local dealer and they have no info on it. Since the bike comes from TX (I'm in IL, selling dealer is in WI), I'm not sure if I'll be able to track down any service history for it.

The bike is actually in Wisconsin right now, originally from Texas, though not sure exactly from where. I just noticed the Texas plate on it in one of the pictures.

So here's the link to the one I'm looking at. I know it's impossible to tell from pictures, but what do you guys think? As of right now I have no information on service history / recalls because the dealers can't see info from other dealers. I noticed the left side mirror is missing, but that doesn't bother me as long as the bike wasn't dropped.

That 1125 was originally purchased from Genuine Harley Davidson in New Braunfels, Texas in January of 2010 for $8327.00. I believe any Harley dealer can run the VIN to see if the recalls and updates have been taken care of. If you want the VIN, I can PM it to you. Don't ask me how I know all this. It looks to me like something has been leaking on the muffler. It's on both sides. The clutch puck looks damaged also. It looks ground down on the bottom. I'd want to know what left the spots on the muffler.

Never buy a bike based on pictures. I would buy from members BEFORE strangers. If it looks beat up or needs work, it most likely was beat up & needs work.

I've bought and sold many used bikes and cars. Pictures ALWAYS makes vehicles look better and are good at "hiding" stuff. Sometimes the vehicle looks good from 5-feet away, but look closer, with a flashlight, and you may see evidence of damage, leaks, etc.

I once bought a used '01 VFR with only "cosmetic damage from a minor drop". It was a lowside and not a drop. The damage was beyond just plastic, the brackets bent, controls bent, upper fairing cracked, etc. Beware!
