Had something very unusual happen to me on my commute this morning. A H-D chopper raced me on my 1125R.

LOL!

It wasn’t a friendly race either. The H-D was on this bike with ape hangers, extended fork, and was wearing this jacket with a printed skull in back of it. Oh I’m so scared! Anyway, he was stopped at a light and I pulled up next to him. I looked over and nodded my head but the guy had this eternal frown that would could bring in clouds and rain. I shrugged and figured nothing of it. The light went green and I started to pull away easily but was not racing the engine at all. Then, this guy just blew past me and cut into my lane! It took me a few moments to figure out why he did this. I mean, he’s got a freakin’ Harley and I’m on an 1125R! Was he is clueless? So I figured I’d give him a taste of his own medicine, so I rolled the throttle and revved it to….hold on: 6,000 RPM! That’s right, 6k. I blew past him like he was standing still and just kept on going. I didn’t cut in front of him though like he did.

I thought it was all over after about a couple of miles but I guess the H-D skull guy hadn’t figured it out. I had slowed down to normal speed when he suddenly blew past me again and cut in front my lane again! AZZ-hole! I didn’t bother with him after that as he made a quick left turn and I needed to go straight. I have to admit, that guy had some balls. Either that or he was delusional. I think it was a little of both.

I don't know about having more balls but fewer brains is another possibility.

Folks race for many reasons.

he may have thought his torque monster could smoke you, which sounds most likely

he may have just wanted to see what you could do, knowing he'd get smoked

I still remember a hopped up chopper on the highway against my Triumph Sprint ST. 50 mph roll on, I was actually worried he might have enough money in the motor to pose a challenge. My gawd, it was laughable.

I'm quite sure this guy was clueless and didn't care to see what I could do. The cold greeting and cutting me off twice were not friendly gestures.

I think he had an ax to grind, and he also didn't know what I had.

I've encountered many H-D owners and 99% of them are clueless to anything other than H-D bikes. They can't tell the difference between a 600 supersport or a Hayabusa, Honda or Aprilia.

yet they'd get smoked by any of those, if there's a decent rider

you got a fun story anyway! Lol

thats funny, i just saw this post at a harley forum!

so this morning, a power ranger on a crotch rocket stops next to me and gives me this look. then when the light turns green he takes off like a rocket, i figure i better teach him the power of american iron so i give it a little bit of gas.

as i watch him get closer and closer i see that he is in shock that he is losing to a real bike. then when i pass him, i remembered that i just got new tassles and i moved towards him so he can see how bad ass my new tassles are. but by then, i was winning the race and i was passing him like he was standing still.

after the race, he was so upset that he took of again cause he was so ashamed to show his face. so yep, another crotch rocket down for the count. lets go get some beers.

... how do you convince the HD motor bottom end to hang together at 240hp? And is that supercharged or turboed?

My quick story is that I just installed an HMF exhaust on my bike and while on my way home last night pulled next to a fella on an R6. He was already stopped at the light and I rolled up on his left. He looked over and quickly did a double take with the most confused look on his face. I nodded while he just shook his head in what appeared to be shock at the noises my bike was making!

The best was a guy in a id say 03-04 Mustang GT convertable with some hot blonde in the front seat, he was on my left in a dual lane set of country roads, he would rev by and then brake, Just asking me to race him so finally I held up my left hand and did 3...2..1..-> and I never saw him again, buy the time I came out of my tuck he was so far back I just started laughing...=)

had a Ford full sized pickup truck, duallie, diesel want to race my Corvette once.

Too hilarious, but I finally decided why not.

So I took off at about 1/100 throttle (0.1 inch throttle depression) and stayed side by side until about 30 mph to give him encouragement, then dropped the hammer

syonyk That involves alot of money! Most of his have procharger superchargers and they are usually 117 cu in!!! They also use spray on alot of the bikes! When you get into that kind of power they run race fuel. Forged internals would be my guess at the crank. I do know that his bikes hold records at prochargers for highest hp supercharged bikes! He owns a shop here in Ashland, OH He probably would love to get his hands on one of our motors to see what he can do!

A few days ago on the way to work, I left a light behind an Avalanche, and next to a new Camero SS with a chick driving. She took off slow, and I was going to drop in front of her and move on, but when she realized that I was going to move into her lane she sped up and looked at me. Then dropped the hammer. I dropped in behind her as she sped up, overtook her in a few car lengths, then really laid it down through 2nd and 3rd gears. She was trying to keep up, but I guess that was her first experience in "don't try to race a bike with a car". Next light, we pull up side by side, and she wouldn't even look at me.

High point of my day.

I've got a couple HDs and I'll race anybody just for the fun of it. They are both heavily modified but I know they won't touch someone who is paying attention on an 1125 or any liter-bike for that matter (I don't care, I will still open it up). And I don't cut in front of anyone during a street "race" - that just sounds like a real bad idea at speed.

I like running next to hot rod cars and just maintaining the same speed they do, but do little blips of the throttle to let them know they can lose at any time I choose. I've only had one car come even slightly close, pretty sure he hit a NOS button somewhere along the line because it lit up the tires on that old Camaro at about 75 mph. Hearing the exhaust and engine on that car over the exhaust on mine was impressive to say the least. Other than liter bikes, nothing else has even come close.

No car has even come close to my HD's, but on any bike it is fun letting them think they have a chance.

Great stories guys. LOL!

Never race a crotch rocket with a car. That's a lesson I taught some teenager driving a, get this: A Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Now those SUV's are bad ass and are fast; for an SUV. LOL!

Anyway, the teenager (looked like one) on the Grand Cherokee SRT8 wanted to get in front of me so he can make a right turn. I don't get that because if you want to make a right turn up ahead, why try to get in front of a crotch rocket that looks mean and fast and all black? Go figure! It wasn't like I was going slow either. But I guess the teenage driver thought his SRT8 was THE fastest. LOL! I don't think so. I rolled on the 1125R's throttle as he went WOT (I could hear his motor rev up). I got to the intersection and stopped. The SRT8 made it to the intersection to make his right but he wouldn't even pull up to me so I can see him and laugh.

I love riding my 1125R on my commute. It's rare that anyone even challenges. These two events were priceless.

I always just blow the other jerk-off a kiss instead of getting sucked into a pretend race. It's a gesture that easily confuses them... so I win!

i like to play with folks too.

The ones that try to out run you, often just because they plan to pull into your lane

Especially the folks that were behind you, and take the empty lane thinking they can go around you. Really? You really think you'll take me off the light?

Sometimes it's just leave them sitting still. Sometimes it's fun to just stay slightly ahead, no matter how much they put the pedal down.

With a little encouragement guys like that are good advance scouts. You can see the radar camera flashes or red-blue flashers from quite a distance! All you can do is wonder when or if the guy will ever realize that he is a tool.

I almost always taunt bikes when im driving my car. Pull up next to them, bump the gas couple times. Even though I know what the outcome will be. My baby loves it too. " go faster dad u can beat the bike" hahahaha

Always goad the fools into being your "bird dog" to flush out the cops.

I love coming up on the two on the side of the road... at a legal speed.
WOW look at the purty lights...

Ooops Danny beat me to that thought...

There's a lot of the usual 'Harley rider' stereotyping going on here I notice. Most Harley riders I make the effort to get to know are bikers who ride Harleys. They may ride other very different bikes too and if you chop their head off the neck doesn't have 'Harley' written on it all the way through : )

Why do we as human being always seem to need to put labels on people and put them away neatly into boxes. I've owned nearly 40 bikes in more than 40 yrs and at the moment as well as the 1125CR I have a Road King and a Sherco trials iron. What does that make me? Well what it does mean is that the vast majority of sportsbike rider look at me slightly amazed when I'm on the RK and give them a nod or a wave.

Maybe loosen up a little on the pidgeonholing and discover you may have more in common than you think with someone who rides a HD?

Peter while everything you say is true, in my experience living near Harley headquarters if you ride anything but a Harley you are usually frowned upon. Top it off with the local HD owners thinking they ride the baddest bikes around it just promotes the stigma that all HD riders are angry people with something to prove. I especially like when I give a Harley ride a friendly wave and get nothing in reply which is all to common. Any other rider on any other bike will usually signal back. Now this is just my personal experience and I have run across some very nice HD owners who will openly admit they don't like the import bikes. Being that I ride the 1125R it is labeled as on import based on its looks.

I've noticed that while on my Buell I am more likely to get the reciprocating wave from other sportbike riders and less likely from HD riders but I've also noticed while on my HDs I am more likely to get the reciprocating wave from other HD riders and less likely from sportbike riders. It just shows that people are more likely to respond well to others in the same "group" and less likely to those on other "groups".

In the UK if anything no body really wave's at a passing motorcyclist - its more of a nod, though In France I have noticed the odd leg shake.
My only rule is I don't nod at scooters, though there does seem to be a revival of the old m.o.d scooters gangs around my parts, there a confused lot.
