Hey guys, I am having a reoccuring problem on my 08 R, the rear crank breather keeps finding a way to come out of the airbox. It started a few thousand miles ago (late April), it went to the dealer, they worked on it, told me the breather came out of the airbox, they put it in, and it was fine for a few days, then I rode it hard for a second and it came out of the airbox again and started spewing oil over the rear of my bike again. I took off the airbox, put the thing back in and reassembled it, worked great for a week of commuting, then the moment I had fun on a weekend it popped out. I've put the thing back in two or three times, and it keeps finding a way out. There isn't much slack on the hose either, I'm not sure if that is related or not. Any solution over than a breather reroute? I don't like the idea of venting to atmosphere. | ||

I have only worked with the one in the airbox that is off to one side ( is this the same one??) ---between the intakes - had to pull it up to keep from "fouling" the throttle linkage... suggestion: melt a hole thru the both walls of the hose ( don't drill or cut - it will propagate a split/crack) and put a ty-wrap thru it to keep it from sliding out of the "housing"...WARNING: if the "retainer" comes out it might get sucked into the intake!....or may be a big safety pin with a lanyard attached to keep it from being ingested...good luck | ||

Frank Try a layer or 2 of black electrical(friction) tape on the breather. The tray has a cross of plastic where the breather goes in, maybe some kind of attachment would work too. I've found mine out also, but don't seem to have any splooging issues. Z (Message edited by zac4mac on July 11, 2011) | ||

Sounds like you might have a bit too much oil if its spewing out. I would try adding an inch or so of hose with a barb fitting, zip tie both sides. | ||

It is the rear breather, the one with the rectangular thing on top. I didn't try pulling it apart, if it was the front I could easily extend the hose an inch, but I wasn't sure about the rear. The breather doesn't go all the way in the airbox either, you "plug it in" for lack of better words, into the bottom airbox piece. Oil levels are a pain to check on these bikes, so I've always erred on the high side just in case. I know Jdugger runs his a tad low to prevent the flooding his airbox on track days. I'll try some electrical tape, thanks Z. | ||

The rectangular piece should also have some filter media in it, not quite like a sponge, maybe more like scotch-brite, just thicker. I was just suggesting the extra inch of hose to make it easier to put it in place and keep it there. | ||

The 08 and 09 air box is different on the bottom. The 09 has a lip that extends out from the bottom of the tray and a rectangular rubber piece attached to the hose that plugs into it. There is no plastic piece on the bottom of the 08 air box. Maybe the dealer can get you an 09 air box and breather hose. | ||

Duct tape, folded over so it is sticky on both sides. Wrap the top 1/4 inch. It will last longer than your last set of tires. |
