kind of just an fyi..

last fall i changed my oil to repsol 10-50 syn racing oil. i figured why not, its going into winter (which i ride when i can. ohio)its liquid cooled, overhead cam, tighter tolerances, etc etc. and it was awesome! smooth shifting easy starting ran perfect.
well at about 2,000 miles after, i noticed the trans shifting a little "notchier". and by 2500 miles the engine was a bit noisier also, and the shifting getting worse... what i'm figuring is there must be something after all too that sheer strength everyone talks about! lol
so what everyone else already knows i just figured out : )

repsol 10w-50 expensive a$$ oil is good for 2500 miles. f.y.i.

p.s. i just put in three qts of amsoil 20-50. go ebr!!

I've been running Loretta on Red Line 10W-40 for the last 2 years.
Winter-Summer no difference, she loves it.
6k and fresh oil and filter, 26.6k miles.

I use Amsoil... So far so great. Clutchless up shifting is smooth like butter! Finding neutral easier as well.

Local HD shop did my stator and they used HD oil. I was able to tell teh diff right away.

Thats why I keep a jug of the good stuff in the garage. ; )

This is what I've been using since my first oil change and I have no complaints.

Out of respect to Erik Buell Racing's prime sponsor I offer the Amsoil white paper link.

Best oil education/presentation I have ever seen.

I ran amsoil, then my engine went out, not related to oil, but my dealer told me not to run amsoil, that they could deny warranty claims if i didn't use hd oil. I know amsoil is better in every way, but I'm scared to run while its under warranty.

They cannot void a warranty based on oil as long as it meets or exceeds the standards of the manufacturers oil.

At least here in Canada. I'd be surprised if similar legislation wasn't in play in the USA.

I know, and they covered the engine under warranty, i just didn't want to argue with them. Warranty ends in November, then its amsoil all the way!

Kinder +1.

Dk: Last time I checked, H=D does not actually make oil, they just slap a label on oil made by someone else. Dealer was feeding you a line of BS. If they did deny warranty because you did not use H-D oil, someone could end up with a nice payday with the appropriate lawsuit. As long as you use lubricants consistent with what is published in the manual, you are good to go as far as a warranty issue is concerned.

Although the Owner's manual 'recommends' H-D oils, it does not REQUIRE them. The manual says:
"If SYN3 or H-D 360 are not available, the final option would be to add a synthetic 15W-50 oil that meets SG and JASO MA specifications."

I totally agree with you guys, but I don't have the time to mess with a lawsuit. The dealer said if Harley knew you were running amsoil they would deny this claim. But the dealer did not tell harley I was running amsoil.
Harley can deny any claim they want to, lawful or not, then I would have to drag them to court if I disagree, which would cost $$$, to me its not worth the hassle.

If that is true, then your dealer is a liar.

Your dealer is insulting you by even suggesting such a thing- take them a copy of the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637, 15 U.S.C. § 2301 ) United States federal law, 1975, and ask if they wish to continue breaking federal law.

Never be afraid of a dealer, they should fear you- the customer always has the power in the customer/dealer relationship. The only time you're at a disadvantage is when you don't have the facts.

The only manufacturer I've heard of that consistently pushes the OEM oil BS is H-D, and it's probably because their customers fall for it so easily. This is why I found E.B.Racing signing up with Amsoil so apropos- they're the oil company that H-D has such an issue with, and have been afraid of for years.

Tell your dealer to pound sand, and use the best oil available for your bike (hint- it ain't anything with the H-D label on it).

Buell out of Hell, baby!

My bet is that the dealer isn't, at least knowingly, trying to bullshit you. They've had this stuff blown up their collective asses so long, and been relieved from thinking for themselves, that many have likely come to believe it. I think they must belong to a union or something.

We (IFM Racing) all run AMSOIL in our race bikes.

Ralph ran all season the last two years wihtout changing the oil!

After that abuse, they did an independent oil analasis, and it has always came back nearly good as new!

For the record... HD oil is not that bad. Even the Amsoil test thingy demonstrated it was better than alot of other offerings.

I still use Amsoil though. ; )

Citgo is the national oil company of Venezuela, owned and operated by the government of America-hating dictator Hugo Chavez.
So it's interesting that Harley -- The Great Symbol of All Things American -- chose Citgo as their oil provider.
I guess they couldn't find anybody in Iran to do it for them.

John ^^ expressed EXACTLY the reason I wouldn't buy another drop of "Harley" oil... Citgo/Chavez. That just never made any sense to me as why Harley would align themselves with that anti-American dictator's national oil company.

SUPPORT VENEZUELA OR YOUR WARRANTY IS INVALID.

(uhhhh, no thanks)

I tried M1 right at 300 miles or so. The valve train seemed a bit noisy for my liking. So I did Amsoil 20-50 on my next oil change.
