With just over 5200 miles on my 2009 1125CR the stator bit the dust. Was doing a nice winter ride in our 50's weather and the engine light and battery light came on. At least I made it home. Charger was reading 9.0 when I pulled down our driveway.

It is still under warranty but I'm not sure I want to go that route. May as well get a whole new, better stator so that I'm not going back and forth to the dealer.

Any good advice??

have them warranty it then get into the hunt for an 08 stator rotor combo to do at your leisure.

Let them "fix" it, too much money to re-invent a system that works!
Better to get the extended warranty. You also get a loaner with it!

If it were me, i'd go the route you are thinking of and just order from Erik Buell Racing if you can get an '08 stator. i think you'll need the cover too.

HD dealer solution only appears to be a band-aid fix to date.

Please keep us informed. I'm at about 4500 miles, so far so good. About 90 percent of those are on back roads at 4500 rpm or more, hardly any in-town stuff. I keep waiting though.

Yeah I ride at least 5k rpm or higher most of the time. I was hoping I wasn't going to have a lemon. There's still hope.

How much is the 08 stator and rotor? At $135 I cannot imagine that rewinding the existing stator isn't the best option.

There isn't anything magical about stators so any shop that knows what they are doing will be able to give you a spec that will be reliable.

So what is going on here with '09 Stators?

They are not as good as the '08 Stators? I have an '08 R and it would be nice to know that my stator is one part that will last.

back when I had my Yamaha, the steering head bearings took a dump due to a piss poor design, letting water get in them and rusting them out. Literally found rust drip marks on parts below. (didnt help I actually rode in the rain a lot back then)

anyhow, I had warranty on it, they said they would cover it since it was a known problem.....but I didnt want to wait the 3 weeks for them to get it done.

I spent the $115 in parts and tore it apart in the garage and had it all done in a few hours.

Sometimes its nice to say screw the middle man and do it yourself.

I'm much more patient now though, so if it happened again.....i'd let them do it and keep the money in my pocket.

I know that won't help you any....just a quick story of mine :-)

Double check it...according to some reports, a lot of the DEAD stators were not dead..wiring, connections, and regulator assembly have all been known to cause problems.

Ohm the three wires going to the stator...if they are equal in resistance, check each to ground, preferably with a meg meter...if it passes meg test and has equal resistance...look elsewhere.

Rogue, '09 stators have a higher wattage output than the '08s. This causes them to run hotter. The excessive heat can lead to failures of the charging system which is the reason for the Factory fix in Service Bulletin B-099, Product Program 0507 1125 Charging System Upgrade.

Hopefully someone will post this SB on the BadWeB in the Recall, Service Bulletins section so everyone could know what's involved with it.

'08s are not affected by this campaign.

rewinding is the best option until proven otherwise. www.customrewind.com has rewound at least 1 09 stator.

I'm still waiting for my dealer to fix my non-charging motorcycle. I wasn't going to let them touch it, but since Erik Buell Racing says they have no failed stators that had the wiring harness installed, I figure I'll give it one shot.

CustomRewind.com appears to be a domain squatter page... Somebody bought the domain and has a page with advertising related to the domain to generate revenue.
I would not go through them for this service.

I believe this is the number for Custom Rewind (800) 798-7282. I am not sure if they have a webpage.

My hubby is still in the process of doing a lot of electrical detective work but I think we will be sending the stator to Custom Rewind to have it done. At least it happened now instead of during the riding season.

I'd love to get it fixed soon as I always try to get out for a ride at least one day every month during the winter : )

Well, after doing lots of diagnostics on my bike, it was finally decided that it, indeed, was the stator. So my baby got taken back to the dealer today to start their diagnostic process, as it is still under warranty, and hopefully it will come home healthy. They did have a stator in stock so hopefully it will be home soon. It's a good thing it's winter otherwise I'd be crying.

I have replaced 2 '09 stators within the course of the last year. I don't know why there is not a RECALL on this!

I have a friend who also is on his third stator. So, unfortunately, I'm concerned about it going out again. If it does happen I'll keep taking the bike back to the dealer while under warranty. If it happens after the warranty, it will then be sent in to get rewound. Hoping and praying it doesn't happen again tho.

I'd order an 08 stator from eebeearr or send your stator to custom rewind. The rewind option would be the most economical though. Even though I'd still like to stick it to HD and make them fix it .

Having your 09 stators rewound from any aftermarket place would probably be the best bet for the $$$, I was the one who had mine rewound at custom rewind back in July and damn did it look a hell of alot more durable than the stock 09s new. Although I did try to contact custom rewind back early september, I had no luck getting ahold of them and they never returned my calls so it could be possible that the guy retired because he did sound pretty old. anyways, the reason I wanted to contact him was because I wanted his opinion on the discoloration of my stator he rewound after putting only a few hundred miles on it. since I didnt get ahold of him, I assumed it was just the hot oil baking into it because my volts were still good. for anyone who wants to see pics of what it looks like, here is one of my posts:Step by Step removal of Ignition Cover. and here is what it looked like when I first got it back: 09 stator issues » Archive through July 22, 2010 just type it in the search tab

4700 miles and I look down to check my charging voltage at every stoplight. I've gotten used to doing this, but it'd sure be nice if I didn't have to think about it like on every previous bike I've owned.

There's a company in the Sac area that does them as well.
I think this is the Canadian one -
http://www.rmstator.com/en/contact.htm
The Sac group -

others:
http://eurtonelectric.com/

They sound promising as well.

Have you thought about upgrading the voltage regulator whilst having the stator rewound?
I have just got rid of the OEM regulator (stamped Ducati E by the way) and am changing to a FH12AA - see other posts by other forum members

I've been watching a Chinese battery company, working thru a Cali office.
One of the guys on the Uly board found them.
Stuff looks promising, a Ni-Fe Polymer battery in a standard size/shape package, not using standard C or sub-C cells.
They also are bringing out an individual cell charger/stabilizer that should be ready now or soon.
Pretty sure the R&D is US, hard to tell tho for sure...

For our size batteries, they say it's an 18 AH equivalent, and about the same price as the batteries I sell at the dealership, for the baggers anyway.
I'm not big on buying Chinese stuff, but at least it's buffered thru Japan, then a US distributor, so it's not all Commie...
IIRC, they build the batteries in Japan from Chinese parts.

http://www.shoraipower.com/t-battery-specs.aspx.

Just another option for storage.
