I went outside a minute ago because i could not stand not sitting on my bike. So i went out there because i was trying to start my bike weekly. Went out there today to start it, nothing. Just wouldnt turn over. So is it dead, is it ok, need help. I do not have money for a battery tender until after the firs of the year. My thought was just leave it, come march hook it up to a battery charger and then i would be good. | ||

I didn't have a tender for many years. I would remove the battery from my bikes and store them in the house. They would always start in the spring. | ||

Its also bad to start the bike repeatedly and not ride it. Some of the extra fuel that gets injected during cold starts and running will wash past the rings and contaminate the oil, lowering its viscosity. Put some Seafoam in the fuel, run the bike long enough for some of the treated fuel to make it's way to the injectors (I try to run it for at least 10 minutes), and then shut it off. Hook up a battery tender periodically (doesn't need to be on there the whole time) and don't start the bike again until you are ready to take it for a ride of at least 20 minutes. | ||

This comes up every year. DON'T START A BIKE UNLESS YOU'RE GOING TO RIDE IT FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES. Aircooled. Liquid cooled. No matter, it's bad for the engine in the long run. Fouled plugs, washed rings, carboned exhaust ports, take your pick...if you're not gonna ride it, just let it sit quietly until you ARE going to ride it. Don't tease the bike. It's not nice.  | ||

1125cr - that sounds like practical advice, it supports the idea that temperature extremes are hard on batteries. | ||

so is it probably ok to remove the battery now, set it on a battery charger in the spring and it will most likely be ok?if so thats most likely what i will do later on this week. also thanks for the help, this is my first bike i have had year round, i just love this machine so much it is impossible to think about getting rid of it. | ||

Don't leave the battery flat, it will stay dead if you do! Home depot has the B & D tender for $20, not the best but much better than nothing. For the short time you can run the bike, you may as well not bother till you get some warmer days to ride for 30 mins plus. Back in the day I had a Honda 750 and during the winter the very short trips fouled the plugs. They were easy to get to compared to the Buell! | ||

remove the batt and take it to advance/autozone. they'll charge it for free, then you can pick it up the next day and put it in your closet until the weather gets better i say the next day cuz it should be slow-charged over night. there's no need to shock it back to life right away | ||

Always keep your battery on a tender. Each time your battery goes flat, you lose 20-30% of it's lifetime. that's a bad thing. A good tender - Deltran, H-d, Yuasa? that does a "float" is the best. Avoid "dumb" trickle chargers that just charge at a minimal but constant current, boils the battery dry after a while. Float equalizes the voltage in each cell and helps the battery last longer. that's a good thing. If you're anal, put front and rear on stands and fill tires with Nitrogen. Or just pump them up to a pound or two below manufacturer max. recheck the next time you ride and set appropriately. Or do like me and ride every day there's no ice on the road.  Zack | ||

I rode 200 miles in the rain yesterday...Found that my new Q2s work real well in the rain (I was Jonesin' bigtime for a ride)....cold fronts suck...the rain was misty...not enough to get WET...it was about 50 degrees..I put my Gerbing jacket on under my rain gear and went at it...today it is clear as a bell...chilly (41) but nice...now I'm cooped up in my office.... Definately get the battery charged PROPERLY. If you take it somewhere and they throw it on a 10amp charger for an hour, you might as well just drop it off at the recycler. |
