Standard dual disc front wheel conversion......Anybody done it ? Compatible parts list ?

I can't afford a set of $185.00 brake pads every 150 track miles, and a rotor every 6'th track day. When I asked Erik Buell Racing for advice, he just chuckled and said "yep, we change them every session ourselves".

Buy the EBC pads, far less expensive.

I've gone thru 4 sets of EPFA's. They suck, relatively speaking, compared to the XX's, or to the stock pads for that matter.

I had the same issues so I put a R1 front end on and WOW what a difference. Still working on the sweet spot with fork height trail offset ect. I have about $500 net (sold the Buell stuff) into the front end and thats with the attack racing adjustable trips. I'm not a top level pro but the confidence I have in brakes is work every cent... Let me know I have if interested I found out the hard way on what parts work for example don't but the vortex CLIP ons and your going to need to mod the k brackets

Trojan Racing in the UK converted I think it was a XB to a dual disk, you can contact them for some advice too.

Trojan Racing in the UK converted I think it was a XB to a dual disk, you can contact them for some advice too.

We put a 2003 Yamaha R1 front end into our last XB12 race bike and it was a MASSIVE improvement in braking and suspension (we used Traxxion Dynamics AK20 cartidges). We had to have some new triple trees made to incorporate the rake of the Buell with the width of the Yamaha forks (slightly wider than Buell so the dual discs/calipers won't fit if you stick to stock Buell width.

The change gave us much better braking performance and more importantly longer brake life. Using the stock ZTL front brake we were running out of brake after 3-5 laps of UK circuits simply because of heat. The R1 brake slasted almosta full season on one set of SBS Dual Carbon pads and offered great feel and performance for a marginal unsprung weight penalty.

Another track advantage (especialy here in the UK) is that most trackside vendors sell R1 brake pads/discs and stuff if requried, whereas the Buell stuff is dealer only so you need to carry everything you may need with you all the time 'just in case'.

Pretty much everything required for the conversion except the triple trees was sourced used from ebay and easily covered by selling the OE forks/wheel/brake in return.

According to the R1 guys (as of last winter) the 04-06 model has the best frontend (bigger brakes) so that’s what I went with along the attack performance adjustable trips and stem…R1 upper and lower with the 1125r stem, simple. Also they give you a racer discount. As Trojan stated the distance from fork to fork is larger not sure what issues he had with the XB but on the 1125r there are 2 radiators to deal with unless you have the front mounted conversion kit. The attack trips are SWEET!! but are so bulky they hit the k brackets. Trial and error on this mod but I tested my seconded set of K’s with a low side and they passed!! You can mod the $800 trips or $40 k-brackets. By mod I mean remove material… Also if you are using the Buell clutch mc use the woodcraft clip ons. Ducati & Aprila are stock brembo clutch MC so one could match the brake mc and any Clip on would work. Steering damper, all you need is a 54mm fork bracket and it mounts to the frame just below the neck with a spacer (2 threaded holes one is for ground) I might redo this with a yoke from Erik Buell Racing. ($30)

As far as set up I wanted a higher trail number and I’m very close to that sweet spot. Right now I have the 6mm offset insert and am 4 mm higher that stock on the fork height (R1 forks are 12.7mm longer) to give me 88-89mm of trail and it handled very well at RA. Unfortunately I went to hot into 5 got into some bumps loading the front messing up my ankle and couldn’t play the rest of the weekend, but the bike was fine…up next is a smaller technical track so I might lower 2mm and go from there…

-$800 attack trips and stem
-$360 complete R1 front end minus wheel ebay bonus it had the right spring
-$100 R1 wheel and rotors ebay
-$40 K brackets ebay
-$40 54mm damper bracket
+$800 for the Buell front end

Total $540

I have pix of all this email me and I can send them, I can’t get them to load????

A bracket that's shaped like a K, 4 faster points... supports the radiators at the frame and motor absorbing a majority of the force when your bike hits the ground.

To get the R1 front end to pivot between the radiators I had to shave them down on one side making them weak. So I added material to the 3 other sided to strengthen them up. I didn't do this on the first set and they failed....

The project was very interesting. Hope it improves braking and handling for you. I have an Attack Performance triple clamp that was made for my 03 XB9R race bike but I never put it on because it handles so well with the stock one. I am going to try to put it on my 08 1125R. The fork tubes are 54mm. so they will fit but the spread is approx 2.0mm less on the 1125R however looking at the axle on the left side there is about the same gap so with machining the axle a bit I hope it will fit. My 1125R has a terrible head shake above 120mph so I hope this helps cure the shake. Anyone with other ideas I would welcome them.
