Damn you HMF!

Is the test phase over? Too late to volunteer an HMF?

Testing is over. It was a tough two days, fraught with obstacles (O2 sensor cable failures, weather, damned charging system/battery voltage issues on David's 2009CR, pre-charging update), but we got most of what we wanted to get done, done. In a perfect world, we would have tested the pipes that had noise inserts with and without them, but we just didn't have the time given the other constraints. But we have some good solid data, I just need to crunch it and generate the proper normalized test report.

HMF was the only manufacturer that committed but then didn't come through. The others either didn't respond, or couldn't commit. Kudos to the ones that provided systems to support the testing. The test wouldn't have been possible without their support.

Stay tuned on the Reinhart. Brian is just a guy that had a good idea and had a few built to his specs by a talented exhaust fabricator. But they have created jigs, they were just waiting on the results of the test to determine if they'd move forward with it. If SOUND and LOOKS were the only criteria, it'd be a no brainer, because that one looks and sounds GREAT. It has an X crossover in the can, like the old XB micron, and has a very distinctive tone like no other. You'll just have to wait for the numbers.

During the testing, I was hardly even paying attention to the torque and HP numbers. Often, we didn't even have that data displayed. We were just trying to capture representative runs based on repeatable AFR data, and level the AFR curves at WOT in the programming phase of the testing. My biggest concern at any time was making sure that the playing field was level, numbers be damned. The data analysis phase will reveal the numbers.

Having done this before, I can tell you that the REAL work starts now, taking all the sound files, pictures, dyno data, weights, SPL measurements, etc. and compiling it all. I know you all want to see it NOW, but it has to be done right. Data out of context is way to easily misconstrued. Please be patient while I boil it all down.

The Erik Buell Racing programmable race ECM ROCKS!!!! Seriously, it is one cool piece of HW/SW.

Oh yea.. the drummer chambered is a pipe that is similar to the regular drummer, but has some additional internal baffles..probably kinda flowmaster like, but I don't know the details. It runs a a small amount quieter, but not night and day. Kevin has been running it on his race bike, and wanted us to include it. Same header pipe, so it was easy to swap in, kinda like Dean's pipes.

Cool. Kevin's been at this a while, and one of the things I love is that he's always looking to improve the product.

Gonna be interesting.

A really big thanks goes out to David Fincham, he not only loaned us his nice CR to flog in testing,he helped me lower the engine and install our headers with the added O2 bungs for our widebands,he assisted in the driveby sound tests ,and he stayed and helped me with the work involved in swapping the pipes.

2nd that, Jim. David's help and loaner bike was most appreciated, it would have been a lot harder without him. Messages are in to the pipe manufacturers to get him one of the test pipes for letting us use his bike.

Thanks David!

Well, here's a bit of an update.

On the positive side, I've edited the audio files, and I've done some of the text editing.

On the negative side, the data analysis is essentially a no-start at this point. It isn't for lack of trying...

The JT&S dyno is a LandNSea DynoMite dyno...really nice stuff. The Dynomax SW it uses is powerful data acquisition and analysis SW. Until now, I've been figuring out HOW I would be analyzing the data, not actually doing the analysis itself. Unfortunately, the demo version that I have doesn't let me overlay or save the work I do : ( So I have to get Terry to open up each file on the Dynoroom computer and export the run data to .csv format so that I can manipulate it in Excel.

All this occurs only in the evening. During the day, I'm sales, tech support, engineering, purchasing, receiving, IT, etc. at American Sport Bike. There isn't any time for doing this kinda stuff during normal 7am-7PM working hours. And I've been playing catch-up for the 5 days I was gone to Sonoma for mapping, the races, and the shootout.

Folks have asked me to give them the quick "which won" synopsis. Can't happen. One, it doesn't work like that. But two, I honestly don't have any idea. While we were doing the testing, I really wasn't paying much attention to the actual HP and torque numbers. Sure, I saw a few, but as often as not, we had the HP and torque plots blanked so that we could more easily read the AFR plots. Terry was doing most of the dyno operation, from the other side of the room where I was running the mapping computer, I coudn't easily read the dyno screen.

I'm working it, but I can say from experience doing the last one, this stuff takes some time to do.

Al, if you need Excel grunt-work done I can manipulate the hell out of some CSVs.

Seriously, I have the time and the skills (I believe). I have the time because my beloved bike is down for the summer and the skills I have earned by building this: Mototheory

(Note: I am not motivated by impatience as I have no money to buy any can right now)

You rock Al take your time. Its always better to take more time and do things right than rush and have crap results. If the XB shootout is any barometer this will be an amazing compilation of data to help the Buell community.

When A-S-B Al publishes we will all know what the "state of the art" is in 1125 exhaust pipes!

I made a little bit of headway on how I'll be doing the data processing. I still have to get a bunch of files converted to .csv format before I can actually start doing it though.

Here's one impression from the shootout:
There is no such thing as an only slightly loud 1125 aftermarket slip on, at least in their "normal" configuration. We didn't get to test the different noise inserts that exist for some of the pipes.

A little anecdote from the testing. I needed to set the levels on the Audio setup (Lexicon Alpha Mic/A/D converter, CoolEdit Pro, Extech 407730 Digital Sound Level Meter, SM58 mic). The 1125 was still configured with the stock pipe. I had my XB12X with a D&D on it there for D&D map development, so I figured I could park it on the drive line and have Ebear rev it up a bit to set the record levels. A D&D is just about the loudest XB pipe, so I figured setting the levels with it would be safe.

WRONG!! Pretty much all the 1125 pipes are louder than the XB D&D. I had to turn the levels on the recording down a bit when we ran the first aftermarket 1125 pipe (the Jardine). So as a result, the stock pipe isn't at the same recording level, but all the others are. I figured that didn't matter than much, as everyone pretty much knows what the stock one sounds like anyway. I'll normalize the stock audio file as best I can to match all the other files.

I figured as much, my Micron XB is way quieter than my Keda RT1 1125.

Just curious, but what makes posting dyno graphs hard? Some of us have previous experience running a dyno, so we get that each machine runs differently. Idk about everyone else, but I'm fine with raw data. Not trying to step on your toes with the number crunching, but without the graph either way I'm not gonna take the numbers. Either way, looking forward to the results.
