I found this on a pre-ride check the other day. The dealer quoted me 230 for a new belt installed, but I also really need a new set of tires. My front is pretty bad, but my rear still has 500+ miles to spare. Being a broke college kid, I would like to get all this done at the same time to save some money. Do I dare ride this thing for a while and baby it, or is failure imminent? Im not all that worried about being stranded, I can handle that. Should we start a pool on how many miles it will last?   | ||

Either way I would ride it for at least the 500miles your tire has and that should give you some time to fetch the funds to do it all. | ||

Worst it can do is strand you.... It really is cake to change the belt. Just basic hand tools. Something to consider if $$$ are tight. R | ||

It is covered under warranty, so bring it to your dealer. | ||

....but to be clear, it is not a LIFETIME warranty. The belt will be covered a) as long as the bike is under warranty, and b) all belt guards are in place. | ||

The wording in the ads and articles say the belt SHOULD last the life of the bike. They don't GUARANTEE it will. "Stuff" happens. But if the bike is under warranty, you should be good to go. Two years, unlimited miles. If you bought the extended warranty I don't know if this is covered or not. Different terms... | ||

I called another dealer and they said it should be under warranty, so I dropped it off over the weekend. If it isnt, Im picking it back up and Ill let everyone know how it lasts. | ||

Worst it can do is strand you.... or cause you to total a bike... some of the teeth may give, all of them probably wont, and when that front pulley gets done winding up under acceleration and decides to catch the teeth that dont move, well take a guess.... you think the buells like to pull the front end up normally, think of it like pulling the clutch in, pinning the throttle, dumping the clutch and seeing what it decides to do. my 03 got totaled when in the process of banging gears it decided to strip about 6-8" of teeth. well in that free spot in the belt the motor spooled up and when it caught a solid part of belt again, over she goes at about 70mph. flipped it self clean onto its top, then end for ended down the road. and now its green... then there is the fact that it will throw your corner off if it decides to jump around when your going through a curve. if your lucky it will just break, but what do i know im only on my 8th belt on that bike... | ||

A new belt will set you back about $200 and take a couple of hours (or less) to install. Having been a poor college student, I can only offer that beer money may have to take a hit for a while... | ||

change the belt as soon as possible, even if changing the tyres has to wait - as others have stated your bike in its current condition is an accident waiting to happen, also as stated changing the belt is easy with hand tools, provided you can torque the rear axle up correctly. What's your life worth? I was once a student too and saw too many friends wasted due to skimping essential items | ||

Tim- I know this belt is weak so I wont be anywhere near a throttle opening that will flip me over backwards. Peter- No noise, I just happened to notice doing a pre-ride check. I dont do those terribly often, so I have no idea how long its been like this Easy- Not sure on my build date as I dont have the bike in my possession at the moment, I took delivery on Dec 28, 2007. All- I have to ride the bike from one dealer to another, as the one that informed me it could indeed be repaired under the extended warranty cant do the work. The original dealer, that told me it wasnt a warranty item, will do the warranty now. So, I have to ride 35 or so miles on the freeway from one to the other. Im not terribly worried. | ||

Back to square one, no warranty coverage. Im going to order a belt next week and put it on myself. | ||

Do a search for Zac's belt change experience. He did a pretty good write up a few month's ago. It didn't look too bad with normal shop tools. Neil S. | ||

^^ +1 I rode for about half a day on a belt missing 8 teeth in a row. Had to baby it, but it was OK. In a situation like yours, I would recommend that you carefully and cleanly cut off that dangling tooth, otherwise it may make some more teeth come off as happened to me in the aforementioned situation... Initially it was only 5 teeth missing, then 3 more were chewed up when I did a 100+ MPH pass knowing the belt was damaged. I cut those 3 chewed up teeth off with some scissors borrowed from a Lutheran church I was passing on my way to a friends, then babied it the rest of the day until I got to the shop where they changed it. It was fine. I'm on my 5th belt. All broken belts were replaced under warranty. (Message edited by chameleon on May 09, 2010) | ||

Zac, my 05 XB9SX is still riding on the original belt and is now at over 50,000 miles. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) | ||

Maybe it has something to do with my riding environment/style?  my 05 XB9SX is still riding on the original belt and is now at over 50,000 miles. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) Your bike's 92 hp & 70 ft/lbs torque aren't likely as hard on belts as the 146 hp & 82 ft/lbs torque mine is putting down. Sorry, I could have resisted, but I didn't. BTW, I've put almost 48,000 miles on my 2008 1125R. So, it's probably safe to say that I ride more than average. Living in Washington state also means that to do so I must ride in the rain. As such, I likely get more shit between the sprocket and belt which is most likely the main reason for the failures... That and my wife likes when I do wheelies with her on the back. | ||
