So, to start, I know nothing about tuning.

I have a Jardine RT-5 pipe and I've noticed 2 things: first, it does crackle on decel a little more than I'd prefer. And I'm seeing some hesitation when I WOT.

Is a tune the answer? And are the popular options (I'm thinking a certain Eastern state) plug and play given an aftermarket exhaust, or are we talking just the first step in an ongoing spending spree?

EBR's ecm will most likely fix your issues. Once and done, no muss, no fuss. $250, plug it in. Also check the packing in it, how many miles are on the pipe? If it's getting blown out, get some higher quality packing, repack and go.

Thanks D_A. I had also wondered about packing.

It's my first exhaust --- first bike, actually. What exactly am I looking for? The total absence of packing, or just melting or other damage to the existing fibers?

Also, I've seen some people here talking about SS packing. Is this suitable for a carbon fiber canister?

Thanks!

Spec 30 packing is probably one of the better ones out there. You'd be looking for either total absence or fine short strands coming out of the core, it's fiberglass packing in those. I doubt you'd see any melting, it's just going to fracture/break somewhere when it (the can) fails. They're not too difficult to repack, just be careful with drilling out the rivets. Stainless wool won't really do a lot on a round or very small oval can like that. Use loose strand material, wind it into the can and use something to stuff it down as you go. Typical fiberglass will last 4-5k miles unless you're racing it. Spec 30 lasts maybe 2-3 times longer.

I've got an HMF on my '08 1125r...It's basically plug and play...no pops on decell, runs strong through the entire torque curve...fit and finish excellent...

Any aftermarket exhaust is not really plug and play. All of them really should get a tune as well.

+1 Get the tune! Before I got the EBR ECM I was running an FMF Apex slip on an 08' with the latest flash. A lot of popping and crackling when I let off the throttle. Now I am running the FMF, K&N Filter and EBR ECM. Very little popping on decel if any at all. The bike does seem to run cooler and is a lot smoother when letting off the throttle... Oh yeah.. Accel feels stronger too according to the "butt dyno".

Thanks, everyone, but we got a little side-tracked from my actual question: Is a tune (particularly the Ohio version) plug and play with an aftermarket exhaust? Or will it need to be tweaked endlessly --- something I'm not qualified to do?

The Ohio one is a waste of money.

The EBR ECM while intended for the Buell race pipe, will be a pretty good match for any aftermarket pipe. Obviously you could tune and refine that even further to gain the extra .5 HP, but it is unnecessary for the street.

This is really funny.

There is "NO"...as you say "plug and play" combination...!

Any change to the intake and-or exhaust systems WILL require a change in fuel delivery for the engine to run as well as it could. NOT just run....ok.

Those of you that think your engine runs fine after the gotta have...K&N filter and or an exhaust change...with NO fuel and timing map changes...well, you are missing out on a lot....!

As far as the Ohio deal...it ISN'T a waste of money...but the help line and future upgrades could/SHOULD be handled better thAn they are....in my opinion.
Many of have this program and are greatfull for it's initial development.

As of this morning, my bike is back to pulling smooth and even from about 2200 all the way up the scale, and is very smooth at all cruise speeds. No factory (Harley) maps will do this (since EBR I guess can't really be called "factory" any longer).

I got the Ohio tune before I changed intake and exhaust.
The manual version let me make changes that turned a popcorn machine into a smooth running beast.
For almost 2 years it was practically the ONLY solution to rideability issues.

I recently bought the EBR ECM and it runs almost as smooth as my changes at low speed and MUCH better everywhere else.
Getting my idle lowered and not seeing that damned COLD flashing during warm-up was worth 250 to me.
Everything else about the ECM is bonus.

So am I the only one who's bike ran worse with the EBR ECM? It stutters BAD below 5000 RPM at anything more than 1/2 throttle or so. I put the stocker back in after 15 miles or so--calling Buell today to ask for a refund.

Only mod is an FMF Apex slip-on.

Pretty much. Several hundred have been sold, only a select few owners have not been 100% satisfied.

Did you perform a TPS reset?

My stock 2009 49 state tune is the shit. I have no desire whatsoever to waste money on an aftermarket tune. My track bike with the EBR Ecm is also the shit. EBR has done a wonderful job. You really feel the extra jump from about 6,000RPM and up.

So what exactly does the EBR unit do that the stock ECM does not?

I have it from a 100% reliable source that the K&N filter only flows as much air as a clean, stock filter, so just changing to a K&N should have no impact.
Having just fitted the EBR pump gas race ECM and run for about 200 miles it has really changed the bike for the better, engine runs cooler, much more responsive, seems to give a little better mpg, off throttle/on throttle response is far superior, lean surge gone - best money spent on the 1125R to date - highly recommended

My limited observation of the EBR ECM I received.

1) Runs better in almost every spot than ever before(24.5k miles)
2) Quite a bit of fuel going in when throttle off, engine braking less, exhaust does NOT pop on decel at all.
3) Big thing - I can see CT during warm-up no more dumbed down COLD flashing at me.
4) Big thing - I asked for a lowered idle rpm and got 11-1200, knowing that that speed will discharge the battery at the upper end of operating temps.

I am still very happy with my purchase.
I will dyno it and compare to the day I got the ECM and baselined the original ECM, after a week or two of riding.
Baseline was strong and smooth.

Cwadster, I'm sure EBR has the solution to your problem. Give them a call and ask before asking for your money back, you won't regret it! These guys know there stuff!

Zac, please elaborate on this point. I know the EBR idle is high at about 2,000RPM. Would this not charge the battery? Or is that RPM not high enough for a net positive to the battery. I am concerned as i have one of the 8-cell lightweight batteries. It works, but i would like to do everything in my power to help it along. Should I ask EBR to lower the idle?

I have been a K&N user for 35 years and will continue to do so

Fresno, what I noticed is my Idle with the EBR ecm was originally at over 1500 rpm, it helped keep the battery charged at idle with both cooling fans on. Now the programming has been changed in my ecm and they lowered the idle down, 1300 rpms. At idle with both cooling fans on it is discharging a little. I liked the higher idle better, kept the battery charged better.

Fresnobuell - The idle speed is unchanged between the standard OEM ECM with 142 flash and EBR pump gas race ECM on my 09 1125R
EBR have advised that the IAC has been altered to reduce engine braking to assist in preventing rear wheel chatter under aggressive use, its fine by me the bike acts like my old RD Yamaha twin from the late seventies now.

Harlan - I'm saying I knew the charging system wasn't going to be happy but I WANTED that lower idle.
I tried to emphasize that whenever I mention the lower rpm.

I love the fact that Loretta SOUNDS like a V-Twin now.
I'm responsible for ensuring I have enough charge to start each "next" time.

Guys, with my EBR ECM my idle is now about 1250-1300 rpm's and I'm seeing 13.2v (unknown amperage) at idle warmed up but have not had it real hot yet. The idle charging might be lower then, BUT I just do not have much reason to let it idle very long. On my rides it does not idle longer then a stop light which are few and yes, I do not commute on it so that might matter with a lot of stops and idling.
Never a problem with a low battery. Bob
