Just seeing opinions on the inner air box cover. I'd be using/not using it w/ a K&N, EBR ECM, D&D (for now)...I've heard with out the inner cover is better for lower speeds breathing but lose the "ram air" effect on the highway speeds. Just curious on other thoughts/experiences.

I think you hit the nail on the head, from my knowledge.
Better down low, and more sound with it off.
Littlebutquick (I think) said he tested it both ways at the strip and he consistently lost a tenth of a second with it off.

Craig, below is a response I got from EBR on a few questions I had: (questions below the answers)

Hello Bob,
Not sure there’s much of a benefit leaving the airbox cover off, though it will be much louder while riding the bike. I’d suggest running the cover for street duty. As you say though, the only loss is ram air at higher speeds.

Though pure coincidence, on the race bikes I’ve managed we warm them up to 150-160F then shut the bike off and let I heat soak a bit before heading out on the track. I think your current process of warming up the bike a bit is a good idea. Is it necessary, no, but a good idea while you give the bike a walk around to make sure everything is in order. Letting the instrument cluster cycle through its boot up is not necessary before starting the bike. I do it out of habit to make sure there are no codes to be concerned about.

Shutdown via the RH control or key switch is fine. There’s no preferred process that I am aware of.

Michael

Subject: My race ECM

Michael, I have been using your YO152.10AZ race ECM for a while now and am highly pleased with it but have a couple of questions: Current state: custom slip-on muffler, K&N air cleaner, inner air cover off and de-noided.

First, I cannot remember where I got it from but was told to always let the instrument panel go through its "welcome to Buell" before starting, to always shut the engine down with the off/run switch and always let the engine get to 151*F before riding off. Is this really necessary, and in particular with my new race ECM?

Second, For speeds rarely exceeding 120 on the street, should I use the inner air cover and was this cover mostly for racing where a small positive cold air pressure could be seen at very high speeds or a necessary for EPA mandated noise abatement? Mine is presently off. Performance seems just fine and much better throughout the rpm range.

Thanks much Michael, you have always helped and I'll be patient awaiting a response. I know you guys are really busy. GREAT!

Bob Thompson, Riverdale, Utah

Something I noticed with my cover off was Higher intake temps on my temp gauge. figure it was due to the lack of air being drawn in thru the ram air inlet. By the computer reading a higher intake temp, it will lean out the afr. So I put mine back on and sure enough intake temps went down quite a bit so leaving mine on.

Although it gives an illusion of a power increase on a stationary dyno, taking the airbox cover off definitely hurts at speed on an 1125. Not only do you lose the ram-air effect of increased pressur oin the sealed airbox, something worse happens. The bike was designed to have high air pressure at the airbox intake. Air coming up through the ram air opening, but with no airbox to corral it, causes really nasty turbulence over the throttle body intakes under the cosmetic cover, and significantly drops power.

The next question is, where's the RR larger capacity airbox?

Thanks much Anonymous, as you stated:

"Air coming up through the ram air opening, but with no airbox to corral it, causes really nasty turbulence over the throttle body intakes under the cosmetic cover, and significantly drops power"

I also encountered this at Bonneville several years ago with a carburated, turboed BMW boxer twin. With a velocity stack to the side of the bike it flattened out at high speed due to turbulence across the velocity stack pointed out to me by a known racer. Shortened the stack and enclosed it in a makeshift air cleaner with the opening facing backwards and viola I set my personal best speed.

My inner airbox is back on so I'm good for outrageous speeds on the street. LOL, Just kidding guys. Be safe out there. Bob

I've posted this before - last year I did some (indicated) top speed testing with the cover on vs. with the over off. Results were:
148 mph - Cover off
162 mph - Cover on
No BS.

I think Anony is full of it... LOL kidding, I'm sure he's legit BUT

Kinda against what T said... I pulled 145 this morning with no cover. She was still pulling HARD!

Capitan, you have shorter gearing on your bike than T_man, plus there will be other factors like your weight and weather condition that will be factors. What you would have to do is make two runs, one with the cover and one without, and do them on the same bike with same rider.

But due to the CR's shorter gearing, I doubt you will be able to get the true max speed without banging off the rev limiter in 6th.

it may LOOK like alot more... just keep it pinned then... it wont pull all the way up on flat ground with the inner airbox lid off. tried it repeatedly. i am used to having miles and miles of flat straight road to just let it grunt away trying to climb. they hit a spot and thats that. put the lid back on and it will gain alot of top end. mine are still off, but when i go to the track i throw them back on(they are just off because it sounds good to me since i have no pipes on either of my 1125's yet)

Ok, I like this tread. It doesn't matter if it's a R or CR, you should see a difference in the top end. I say that because, we all know that the CR is slower on the top end than the R. So, we should be able to see the diff on the tracks, and dyno.

I wonder if a pair of 2-3 inch long velocity stacks run with the inner air box off (or on) would benifit smoothing out the turbulance. My old 92 VFR-750 had 4 stacks inside the air box and it was engineered by Honda. Worked great on the carbs, but has anyone tried this approach?

Arthur(Blackbear), have you seen inside the airbox under the filter. Buell has designed some of the nicest velocity intakes ever. Very smooth all the way to the valves. Some have tried longer stacks with limited success and probably longer would only benefit the lower rpm ranges.

And as Froggy said guys; The anonymous postings are right from the horses mouth, so to speak. Trust them. Bob

Captain_america, There is a lot of sand, dirt, maybe a bird, or cow sucked in, if you are not careful with an open airbox.

And you now what we do with roasted cows, yes BBQ them further and eat them (-:
